Jack Daws "counterfeit" gold penny.

A fascinating read! An artist made an 18k gold penny, plated it in copper, then circulated it.

Link to the woman that found it...

    Interesting story.

I once put various edge lettering on some plain-edge Sacagawea dollars and spent them.
I never heard of any turning up, though.

What did you write on the edges? "For a good coin, contact dcarr@DesignsComputed.com!" image

"Sure enough, a 1972 penny weighed in at 2 grams."

This is a blatant lie. I wonder what other "untruths" are present in this story as well?

I couldn't afford gold so I made a Lincoln cent out of zinc and then copper plated it and then put it in circulation. No one even noticed---it was that good!!! image

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

Or ... it was so bad, no one could tell the difference between that one and those from the mint. image

There are real gold mint error cents (both Indian and Lincoln) accidentally struck on gold $2.5 planchets.

Accidentally or not so accidentally? Has any of those ever been found in change?

I've see these for sale in major auctions but I have no idea if they were intentionally created or not.

Here's the finest known from PCGS CoinFacts. This was purchased by @Byers back in 1975 for $7,750, then a record. It's worth half a mil now.

@Zoins .... Your first link does not work....
It would be amazing to find such a coin in circulation....Most experienced coin collectors would notice the weight difference right away...unless given in a handful of change. Cheers, RickO

Yeah, for some reason it worked yesterday but not today. It may be temporarily down, but if it's still down after another day, I'll remove it.
