Seated Liberty Half Grading - What Grade Would PCGS Assign to this 1843 Half ???

Mark Goodman just imaged this half dollar, and I'm wondering what the sharp-eyed experts here would grade this coin?

This half has resided in a SDB for the last ~30 years in this Medlar's Envelope. I believe he has passed away, but does anyone here remember the guy or did anyone ever do business with Medlar?

AU58, wear on the leg of Liberty?

    65

I remember going to Medlar's as a kid... too rich for my blood! I stuck with Alamo Heights coins instead. Henry Cisneros had an affair with Medlar's wife, IIRC, that was quite a scandal.

I don't see a lot of luster, although the surfaces are very clean ...

So I'm grading by the weak or muted luster ... 64 tops, probably 63

There is a possible touch of rub on the thigh, but I don't think that will hold it out of the Unc grades (from the picture at least) as I don't think it's circulation, and hence I think it will be a "cabinet friction" debate

    just my 2c

    BTW ... she's a pretty one!! image

Very nice, looks like a 64, maybe even a 65 depending on the luster. image

MS64.... More luster would be apparent if not for the tarnish. Cheers, RickO

I'll go with 64 as well. If the luster is much better than the pics show I can see it grading much higher.

    Nice coin!! image

    I'll guess 65. Any chance that's a proof?

The coin is very attractive, and from a general inspection of the picture, I'd give it an MS-64+ to 65.

The only thing that concerns me is a faint pattern of lines I see on the reverse. Is it just the photo? Is it faint roller marks which are often seen on coins of this vintage? Or is it a light wipe? If it's the latter that could be a problem, but even if there light lines there, it's still a nice piece that I would welcome into my collection.

I saw Bob Medlar many times at coin shows in the 1970's and 80's.He was a class act all the way.I remember looking at a 1849-D $1 gold in a very nice AU at a FUN show one time.I passed on the coin but later changed my mind and went back to buy it.You know the story, it had been sold.

They are faint roller marks. The coin is faintly semi-PL...call it a 'hard luster'.
