Suppose you bought a coin from them and they wouldn't make an offer on it.
What kind of dreck would that be?
How about slimy sludge dreck. Or cesspool sludge dreck. Maybe sewer-gas sludge dreck.
Anyone else out there good with colorful adjectives and metaphors?
Does Legend's new term "Sludge Dreck" mean that those coins are even crappier than regular dreck coins?
I have purchased coins from Legend. One was beautiful half eagle graded MS65. I thought it was vastly under graded so I sent it in for a regrade. I'm so cheap that I even used the free quarterly special. It jumped a point and a half to MS66+ and a population of 1/0.
The pcgs price guide jump was from $3750 to $11,500.
Does this old man think that Legend sells the good stuff? You bet!

Toxic Waste Sludge Dreck™, which would then be topped only be Double Nuclear Toxic Waste Sludge Dreck™.

There ought to be some other good Yiddish words to string together for the ultimate in dreck.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.
"Paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value---zero."----Voltaire
"Everything you say should be true, but not everything true should be said."----Voltaire
<< <i>Let's not forget that most collectors aren't millionaires and they are happy collecting what others would call widgets or dreck. >>
It kind of makes you feel like the kid in the candy store who is not tall enough to reach the counter, doesn't it?
Still I'd like to know what dealer has the four piece Proof-66 Twenty Cent piece set for sale @ $50,000 that would meet Legend's lofty standards.
Somehow I think that they are tad low on that one ... At least for REAL PR-66 coins.

How about "schmo?" "Schmo" as in naive, easy to deceive, a mark. Use in sentence:
"After sizing up the client, the evil coin dealer sold him some schmo dreck which he later refused to buy back."

I have flirted with the idea of this set and think she is low for even marginal PF66 coins, and thats forgeting that most consider it a 5 coin set not a 4.

We all know this but is it really necessary to disparage what the average collector can afford by calling it dreck?

I don't think that's what Legend is doing. The derogatory terms used for certain coins are not necessarily based on the (low) grade or (low) value of the coins, but rather, their poor quality (for the grade). And I believe Legend has even explained that previously. But some collectors appear to want to be insulted, even if no insult was intended.

Calling someone's coins "dreck" is not insulting? Interesting.

That's not what I said - obviously, you know that. And they are not disparaging "what the average collector can afford" - they are disparaging certain coins, regardless of their grade or value or who collects them. Please stop trying to put words into their mouth and mine.

Simply because a piece is not MS66 or higher has nothing to do with collectabilness(is that even a word?)
I would not trash a lowly piece as "Dreck" that is steeped in U.S. history.

I don't view attractive collector grade coins was "dreck." My collection is full of them, and some them are among my favorites. Collector grade coins are not part of the Legend business plan, for the most part, so unless you are looking for a high grade piece Legend is not the place to go.
Neither does Legend.
I'm more so eagerly awaiting the release of Laura's Yiddish-English Numismatic Dictionary!
The market for this material is even thinner than that for the MS counterpart. People didn't spend PF nickels, they have higher pops in higher grades than their business strike counterparts. Hence, the affordability of the PF coins of the series.
Re Barber Halves in PF. This has been a slow moving series since I started collecting. Compare PF 5 prices 10 years ago vs. now, and I'll bet they've dropped. I'll also bet the PF 5 you could have gotten 10 years ago is nicer than its counterpart today. Plus, this is just usually not an attractive coin for the grade. You have to do a lot of digging to find a nice PF or MS 65 in this series.

Help me understand what constitutes a dreck coin. Obviously an ugly, cleaned, etc coin is dreck but what if the "attractive collector grade coin" was in a slab and was overgraded based on the grade on the label? Is this coin dreck or not? I've heard it said that overgraded coins are dreck. Is this right or wrong? Is the grade assigned by the TPG a determining factor?

Even I would call those coins dreck. Thats a no brainer.

Here is the official definition of a "dreck" as it relates to coins, as found in F.N.D. (Feld's Numismatic Dictionary: A junky (or worse) coin of any grade and/or or value, based on the assigned grade.
<< <i>Hello??? If a coin is OVERGRADED in the plastic what do you think it is? You can never says its nice for the grade.

That's what I don't understand. If a Saint is in a MS68 slab but is really only a MS67, I wouldn't call that coin dreck even though it's overgraded in its current slab. I would just call it an overgraded coin but it wouldn't be dreck to my way of thinking. I guess I'm over thinking this.

In your example above, I'd agree that it's just an over-graded coin. But what if the coin looked like a 66 and/or had been obviously doctored? THAT would qualify as "dreck", even though, in a vacuum, an un-messed with MS66 Saint is far from "dreck".

See how easy that was? And it helps to illustrate that Laura has not been disparaging collectors for what they collect, or based on the value of the coins involved.
She certainly did not think my new acquisition was "dreck."
In fact, she liked it. But it is not the kind of coins she inventories. But you cannot inventory everything or you spread yourself too thin.
Of course, I am going for a CAC gold sticker on it.
I already have a dollar bet (think Trading Places movie) that I will get it too. One of my best friends who bet me on it thinks I am nuts. He says green sticker. I say gold!

Legend is in the coin business, not the spelling business. And I am quite confident that they could and would use a proof reader if they really cared about their spelling. Apparently, they don't. And as much as I appreciate good spelling and grammar, I have no problem, whatsoever, taking them seriously.
