You know last year I didn't buy any because I had a crapping year with the product the year before. So after seeing some of the pulls from last year I thought I'd buy some. Now I totally regret wasting my money on this junk. The first couple of years were awesome, but it's just mainly junk now. And I wasn't upset that I spent the money. I mean, obviously if you're buying this stuff hoping to score the big one you might be disillusioned. It's just the product sucks.

I've stayed away this year, I'll probably pick up a set and the regular mini sets on ebay, but my days of buying A&G cases are over. If Heritage doesn't pick up soon it may be next on my axe list, and with next years being the 1962 style (which I hate), modern may very well be a thing of the past for me.

Bought 2 boxes. Nothing special. Cool Dinosaur, Tony Hawk and other cards to give to my boys. Everything else is gone. The hits....

I think you'll feel quite liberated, Doran. I have zero regrets in bowing out of the case I ordered from Joe (thankfully I was able to resell it for him). From here on out, I'll still be doing a Dodger set, but it'll be a cold day before I get sucked back into purchasing endless cases & blasters like I used to. Certain factors contributed:

    * my wallet just can't afford it any more. We need folks to spend money to help the economy, but if anything good comes out of this country's mess, it will be that Americans are learning to spend on what they need, rather than what they want. Wanton frivolous purchases, at least for me, are becoming a thing of the past. I still splurge for a card here & there, but am a lot more selective about it.
    * the always diminishing return really jaded me about future large unopened purchases
    * SSPs - complete & utter BS. Topps counts on OCB set completists like me. Well, no more - I'm throwing off those chains.

    Nick,

I'll be ready to trade soon. Still opening stuff up to work on the minis and with so many mini sets this year, I'm missing a ton of regular minis so far.

An example of why it's semi-bad luck for me to trade before I'm done ripping:

Last week, someone on the MCG facebook site posted a Dice-k silk card from this years Topps series 2. he had it up for trade and we ended up making a trade for a Triple Threads card I had.
On the way home from work that day, I picked up a jumbo box of Series 2. My mail arrived that same day with the silk Dice-K card. On the 3rd pack I opened, yup, you guessed it, another Dice-K silk card. image

That scenario, but not as extreme, seems to happen to me every time I make a trade while I'm still into ripping stuff. At times, by the time I'm ready, everyone else is done trading image

Because you wait for the red sux to score a run before you rip, and at the high rate that they get shut out, 5 boxes takes you a week and a half. image

I still think it's funny that we call these "hits" but they're cards that you can barely sell for $0.99 on ebay. I'll still torture myself with this set this year... I can't help it.

+1. I don't know what Topps needs to do, but I don't think anyone cares about their framed relics in A&G. Either improve the relics or replace the relic volume with more autos. You're right though, many relics go unsold for $1.

Well picked up one more box since the Lincecum silk should easily cover the cost of the first box and then some. All I can say is I am done buying boxes of these cards. Unless you get lucky every box you are going to lose money more often then not since most hits are worth about another pack.

    year nada.

I am going to put a base set together and a reg mini set, but what I am getting at is if you are paying say $95 to $120 a box on these it is like driving a new car off the lot. You lose on average like 40% instantly. I would rather put that money into graded older stuff. Like McAdams said, most of these relics or hits are pretty much worthless. Opening this set is like playing the lotto, and not all of us can win everytime like Zep. image

You pay a premium for the right to rip. Yeah, you might lose 25 - 40% on an average hobby box, but you pay a premium for the fun of being the guy who gets to open a box and have a shot at opening a truly spectacular 1/1 etc. Plus, IMO its much funner to rip a case and collate a few sets vs. just buying a set that someone else put together.

< This thread sucks so bad for trading that I had to start a thread to trade for A&G on TheBench.com. >

i had to do the same thing as well. i remember back in 06-07 i could literally dump all my doubles and minis just by trading. quite fun. i posted my wants a few pages back and got only 1 offer for a few of them. and yeah, with the lack of solid "hits", this is feeling a lot more like buying lotto tickets. rather than buy anymore boxes, i might just try to find a cheap ($80) rip card and take my chances there. in 5 years of cracking this stuff (basically the only modern set i collect), ive never gotten a "rip" card before.

i bought a gravity feed and 2 blasters of this carp and probably would have been better off spending the money on toilet paper, serious, i went out bought a lotto ticket and got a 25 buck winner, felt better,, just sayin,, bj

Yeah, well, boxes 3 and 4 were duds...first time I've opened 4 blasters and only gotten 1 framed card. The bazooka is always nice though and I should be close to finishing my base set now.

Oh well, I think A&G is probably out of my system now.
