Is this kosher? ebay...
This ebay listing says "1894 O Morgan Silver Dollar Graded by PCGS Rare" The coin is "Genuine", and not graded. Not a big deal but curious for opinions.

Sorry to be so cynical, but I’m to PO’d at eBay for its lack of concern about counterfeits I don’t feel like giving them much credit for anything.

<< <i>For him to call this coin uncirculated is unconscionable >>
Mmm ... PCGS indicated that is was uncirculated, so why do you say it's unconscionable?
Oops me bad...PCGS DID NOT SAY it was uncirculated, but the seller did ..... my apologies ... (need to get my spectacles checked)
Where?
It doesnt say anything about the coin being MS on the slab... The coin also IS NOT graded by PCGS. Its slabbed as real by PCGS. This guy should be pulled just for being misleading.
To the uninformed, the title, "1894 O Morgan Silver Dollar Graded by PCGS Rare" suggests PCGS graded it and declared it rare. A truthful title would be "1894 O Morgan Silver Dollar Certified Genuine by PCGS".
Still, we've seen much worse.
Lance.
the coin has to be graded for PCGS to determine that they cannot encapsulate it in a graded holder. it's the same as a BB'd coin or any coin you might personally look at in a shop or at a show. when you look at the coin and say "It's been cleaned" you have just graded it. also, i think the "Uncirculated" Special Instruction notation was just a mistake and the title seems to me just missing a period or comma between PCGS and Rare.
you guys are way, way too nit-picky and often wrong.
<< <i>for all who are saying the coin is not graded, you are technically wrong.

This may be semantics but graded to me means it was given a number. The slab itself says "Genuine Not Gradable".
Joe.
not my semantics, call PCGS up and get it from the horse's mouth.

THe slab says, "Not Gradable". --Jerry
<< <i>Saying "Graded Genuine" is technically incorrect since Genuine means "not gradable" to PCGS. But that is more semantics than misleading. --Jerr >>
I take issue with his use of the word "graded" in this context, too, but it is mostly a matter of semantics and probably not a conscious choice on the seller's part to mislead anyone.
Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.
Just to get technical, it was graded by PCGS and PCGS found it to be genuine and called it not gradeablebecause PCGS does not give net grades to coins. If you sent it to one of the other major TPG's they would have given the coin a net grade.
apparently many simply choose not to acknowledge this point. what i find surprising is that several veteran members in the thread would argue the "graded-not graded" point, but it just isn't worth wasting more time on. what we "feel" isn't what matters. i suggest that anyone who is stuck on the semantic point should call PCGS customer service and get their explanation. i did that at one of the ANA's regarding BB'd coins and why the Grading fee was charged when the coin wasn't graded and the answer was as i gave in my first thread reply.
K: I just got back the half-dollar I submitted to PCGS for grading.
J: Great. What grade did you get?
K: Genuine.
Joe.
in the past PCGS gave out BodyBags for a coin that couldn't be be placed in a holder and then charged whatever the submission fee was to grade the coin; they didn't refund a cost because they had graded the coin. the "Grade" in PCGS' own words is simply The numerical or adjectival condition of a coin as judged by them. whether that is MS63 or Genuine Damaged is of no significance. they simply changed their policy and now encapsulate problem coins in a different BodyBag. perhaps the confusion is created by PCGS listing Genuine not Gradable on the reverse of the slab. i suggest you call them and offer your arguement. i feel confident they will tell you essentially the same things.
Actually, I normally would not comment on the "kosherness" of a $40 Morgan (because I do not care) on ebay but was itching to use the above expression.
