FINALLY, a coin I DIDN'T walk away from because it was too expensive.

braddickbraddick Posts: 23,128 ✭✭✭✭✭
Long Beach was an enjoyable experience for me. I love walking the floor and gazing at the little beauties within the various Dealer cases.
I'm not really a Franklin collector but when I stumbled upon the one featured in this thread, I knew I had to own it. I balked at the price the Dealer quoted but quickly recalled the times I've walked away, only to return and have the coin gone- sold to someone else.
I wasn't going to let it happen this time!

Here is my new (PCGS) Franklin:
(Please refresh the page if the image didn't load and I'll get images of the reverse up soon.)

Looks like he's holding his breath........
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

A coin where the grade is simply no expression of the quality. Awesome nuclear blue color!!!!

Gotta pull the trigger on those.

Pat, as long as YOU like it and you had the money for it, that's all that matters.
I would have gone up to $60 or $70 on it image
(it does have a nice look, but I like some of my mint set frankies, that are still raw)

Franklins just aren't a hot area aside from a few that get sold...the reselling is where the collector gets bit right now image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    Right on, brother.
This is one of those coins I simply knew instantly I would never recover on the price but didn't care.

Sometimes coins, like fine dinning, cost too much and just has to be chalked up as money (not well) spent.

I purchased it from a dealer I had not done business with before. For those of you who were at Long Beach, he was at the far west wall, about in the middle, maybe a dozen dealers down from the ANACS table. Coins of Appeal is the name on his business card. It looks like he's been in business since 1991.
I asked and was told he doesn't do eBay nor does he have a website.

I'll PM his name for those that inquire.

Okay, please don't flame me, guys. And Pat, I don't mean to insult you or anything, - but did you buy that to show an AT coin graded MS 65 in our host's holder?

My question is more about, do YOU think it's AT? Not whether or not I do...

I can't say that I've seen one like it,
which makes it all the more interesting.

I am convinced the coin is not AT.
The photos don't capture the luster and that is unfortunate. In hand the luster appears to lay over the toning.

I may have still purchased it anyway even if I strongly suspected it was AT, but nowhere near the amount I paid.

I've seen this intense blue on other coins before- all without issue (many times on silver Roosevelt dimes and fewer still, on Washington quarters).
I also trust the graders of PCGS as usually the wilder the coin appears the more cautious they are.

The reverse is also a 'tell' as that color combination and blend is, although not common, seen on other Franklin halves.

That's a very typical color for a 1956 Frankie but the depth and richness of the color is anything but typical....it looks amazing and I would not have balked at $100 to $150...anything more then that and I would have probably passed but everybody knows I pay stupid money for coins.....but I sure like to look at my overpriced treasures which is more than I can say for a lot of widgets I see posted image

Okay then. Where's the "spoof" part?
  • Options
Pat....different date but for comparison....I pulled this washington quarter out of an original 1958 Double mint set a few weeks ago.....notice how deep and neon the blue is? Looks very close to the color on your coin even though the quarter doesn't have full coverage like your frankie.....

Here is a similar blue color on a 1955 Mint set toned frankie...

    and a 1956 Blue Dime...

    Thanks Shane.
    Those are pretty!
    Are they in for grading?

I don't think PCGS or NGC has any problem with these coins.

Just thought I would share some shades of blue that come out of mint set for those thinking AT on your coin. I am 99.99% sure it's legit toning image

Definitely a Franklin that was pulled from a double mint set. Blue toning is common for this date, but yours is toned almost 100% blue on the obverse!

There are specs of the gold/brown toning across Ben's face, which is common for '56 double mint sets too. Every time I have seen a Franklin toned this blue there are usually some distracting specs of gold/brown in the mix too. I guess it's just how they toned in the government packaging.

This coin is naturally toned IMO, and attractive to me. image

I expect that the coin was stored in a Capital Plastics holder.

In the over forty years I have been collecting coins, I have NEVER walked away from a coin that I thought was too expensive and had any regrets about it. I have however, bought some coins which were acceptably priced about which I later had buyer's remorse.

In all of this time, I've only seen ONE coin which "had my name on it." Dealers love people who don't walk away from coins because they are too expensive.

    Braddick,

I think I've seen that coin before! That dealer does have a lot of nice coins and is good to talk to, his name escapes me now. If I'm not mistaken, I think he had a matching pair with that color too. All his bluish halves were stunners in person, that photo doe not do it justice. I think I know how much you might have paid, as long as you like the coin, that's all that counts.

..........i was joking the coin was A.T

    it's real tone .

you paid a "King's" ransome for that coin ............ there is a dealer that has a case full of that type of toned material -and more then once i told myself

no matter how high he sez- i'm gonna buy ............. then he shoots a price that is in outer space ! and most times I pass........... only a few dealers have the nads

to quote a price thats 10X the going rate .

I'm gonna guess you paid him 500$ for the coin !

the coin is rather attractive, but the color is typical for 1955-1958 Mint Set silver judging by what i've seen. the OP coin is a bit more intense and if the luster is strong, all the better.

I like it, would probably consider up to $200 if luster is all there (and must be to go GEM)

would really think hard if at $500 - but probably walk (and would not be surprised if sold at show)

and I bet the dealer had it in his case for a good long while and still would be in his case for a long while if you hadn't bought it -

it takes on hellova lot of "something" to pay a ridiculous amount of money for a coin that's only "worth" 150$........

    not many around who can stomach getting bent over like that ;

but I do not think you will regret buying the coin ......... heck -I already offered to buy it from you !

I guess $250. Thanks for the giveaway.

The deep blue toning on Roosies often come from the green ink in the dime roll paper. I've also seen silver coins with this coloration when stored in green Mehrig albums.

Very nice coin, Pat! image As mentioned, blue/gold is/are common colors for '56's. Obviously your blue is WAY more intense than the average blue for that date. I am "sure" that your coin is NT.

I've got a similar toned '58 Frankie that originally I had no question was NT (bought it a couple of years ago), but given some of those 1957-8 Washie quarters that have been showing up in the last 6 months, now I'm wondering a little bit. I'm still comfortable with the obverse being NT, but I'm wondering if the reverse was "aided" or not. On the whole, I still think it is the real deal (oh, and for what it's worth, it's been blessed by PCGS)...
