Much ado over nothing here in my opinion. If we choose to help someone by offering advice or help here, it's of our own volition and with no strings attached. You can't really say "I'll only give you my opinion if you don't sell the coin here". How silly is that? Why would we even care how they dispose of their own item anyway? It's their item, and their call as to how they choose to dispose of said item. So, we either help them out, or we don't...but we certainly shouldn't come here complaining that we can't dictate the terms under which said help is offered or given.

<< <i>I do understand the feelings expressed here, but as a new collector who really is here to learn, I appreciate the members who take the time and effort to help me. I have never yet tried to sell any coin here, or on any of the other forums I belong to. I have asked for grade opinions (not to sell a coin) and no doubt asked what must seem like some pretty dumb questions to many here. As I said though, I really do understand the feelings expressed here. I belong to another forum where I have seen new members over the last few months flood the forum with posts trying to sell coins. The same members rarely post about anything else. I am there to learn and to share with others, not to go shopping. I try to share what I can, but that is not easy here considering what I know from a year as a collector compared to the knowledge of many others here. Anyways, I just wanted to say that I value this forum, and the members, as probably the best resource I have found and I certainly appreciate all the help I have received. >>

VAMworld and other specialty sites have similar problems. But it can be difficult to separate those whose motivation is only money, from those who have real collector’s interests.

    Roger,

I'm a "numismatic enthusiast" who actively revaluates my collection - speaking to the "money motivation", but I don't think that the money motivation is mutually exclusive from the "real collector's interest". I believe that I am a "real collector" whose interestes not in "profit first" but "collector value" first. I define "collector value" as a coin whose pedigreee and/or historical importance, combined with scarcity and metallic value, provide the collector with a valuable rarity, that adds up to "investor" monetary value! In other words, I possess coins of value, some of which may be of "monetary-investment value" and others that are only "collector value". Go figure?

OK, I realize that I just posted a "conundrum" of a response. To clear things up, if I can, I want to add that I purchase first, coins that I want to collect, and secondarily, coins that have intrinsic value. I guess that "intrinsic value" is my interpretation of the OP's message. image

sorry....don't mind me...I'm just feeling older and cranky..
  • I've been thinking about this for a couple days now, figuring where I fit in. I just turned 56 and started collecting around age 8. Sold most of my collection around 1979 which paid for almost two years of living expenses while in college. That collection was really a novice collection; I still have some of the original collection. After a long absence from collecting I started again in 2005 and found things have changed -- a lot.

I still go through all my and my wifes pocket change, so there is the collector coming out. In 2005 I started buying older gold coins, putting out around 100k untill figuring out just because a coin is graded MS64 through 67 does not mean they'll hold their value. I had one of all three types of gold dollars, quarter eagles and indians, half eagles and indians, eagles and indians, double eagles and Saints, all decent grades. In 2007 I figured I was buying the wrong coins. I enjoyed them, but didn't want to put out that much money and find 28% of it was lost in value because of not buying the keys which seemed to have held up better when the economy fell off a cliff. So I learned a little about gold coins, but was still a novice and still a newbie.

The only type coin I can say I collect are First Spouse. Yes, I've ordered silver proof sets, gold and silver eagles, UHRs, and Buffalos; even SOLD a few eagles. I'd love to build a collection of walker halfs, they've been my favorate design since I was a kid when they were still in circulation. Will I start a collection of walkers? Not any time soon. There is so much talk about AT/NT that it scares me away from collecting older silver, nickel, and copper. Learning about coins being cleaned is more important now than ever before. These issues helped me to become a collector of paper currency (bet you're happy to hear that). Yes there are issues with paper too, doctors go anywhere if there's money.

Bottom line; I think of myself as a newbie. As such I do not think I can contribute much, I'd prefer the people that do know what they're talking about give advice and not become another that knows a little but has advice for everyone. I will sell some coins, for example, I buy 90% silver as investment but I really do enjoy looking through them using a 16X loop. Morgans and Peace dollars are fascinating. In that 90% I've found two ddo washingtons and a number of VAMs. Those are in the mail being returned from grading and when I get them I'm going to sell them. I may not collect them but I enjoy viewing the die cracks, die grinding and polishing. Morgans are another silver coin I'd like to collect, but having to go on disability in 2001 I'm lucky that I can collect what I do now. Most important, I was able to save some from melting. Please remember this when you see me ask a question about a silver coin. It's much more enjoyable studying and learning about them than sending them in for melt. If I can make a few dollars saving some coins from melt and selling them it gives me more funds to buy what I do collect.

For what it's worth, an older, long time newbies point of view.
Remember, I'm pullen for ya; we're all in this together.---Red Green---
