The year 1855 makes for the toughest denomination trio produced at the Charlotte mint. The QE is one of the toughest dates in the entire Charlotte production run, with only 3,677 produced. This year is one (and the last) of only six that Charlotte produced all three denominations (1849, 1850, 1851, 1852, 1854, & 1855).

This one is in the mail to me It was much tougher to find a nice looking 1909-S $5 that I imagined. Found at least 3-5 times as many 1909-O $5 coins available than I did the 1909-S $5.

The San Francisco Mint coined about 90 thousand Gold Dollars, actually less than the much more coveted Charlotte Mint! Their coins saw probably more actual circulation than any other mints gold dollars....and some today are among the rarest (though undervalued) high MS GDs. The 1859 S, for instance, in Akers opinion is perhaps the rarest high grade coin in the entire series. Below, a near complete year set for the SF mint, still hunting for the elusive 1870 S.

I bought this 1896 double eagle because of the date and its connection to the "free silver" presidential campaign that dominated the news that year.
