Im sorry, but I have to say something about fellow member Cars...

He is currently selling an UNREAL collection of fractional silver bars right now on ebay. I am NOT exaggerating when I say that his current offerings are on par with some of the world's rarest coin auctions such as the Eliasberg collection for example. Some of you may snicker at that comment, but its absolutely true! He has for sale some bars that you see only a couple times a year, and some other bars that you are not likely to EVER see again! Its simply an amazing assortment of some of the rarest silver bullion available. I certainly hope the auction is successful for fellow member Cars. I know firsthand how aggressively and comprehensively he put the collection together. A part of me is actually saddened to see it all being liquidated, but one cannot hold on to a collection forever, no matter how impressive it may be.

Stunning compilation of fractional silver!

  • His collection is simply SICK! I only wish he had written a book on fractionals before selling these wonderful rarities. Hopefully he has them all photographed and well described should he wish to undertake such a task.

That is an awesome Engelhard set, and one I never got to own. I have dealt on numerous occassions (through the mail) with Rick, and he is a class act all the way!

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but are those hallmark bars sterling or .999? They're awesome, but isn't the whole point of the English hallmark to specify the sterling standard?

My exposure to art bars was back in the 1970's as a kid. I bought the Franklin Mint types and other rare pieces with production numbers less than 1,000. I remember Silver Town had their own series. It seems everyone was into art bars. It was nuts. Coin World should have changed their name to Silver Art-Bar World back then. But after I saw "Cars" collection, I had no idea the depth. I like the poured bars best.

I'm eyeballing a few myself but have to say I have no clue to their worth...may get lucky.

Thanks gecko for the heads up.

  • Renman....even "experts" such as cars and myself really have no specific way to determine value on some of the most esoteric bars. Completed listings are pretty much worthless since alot of these things show up once a year IF THAT! On bars that I have never seen before, when I was a collector, it was common for me to bid up to 10x melt and still lose!!! There just is no standardized price guides for this type of material. Its that obscure. But there IS a strong market for these oddball bullion pieces. Watch what the hammer prices are on this stuff. My guess is that he will AVERAGE about 5x melt on most items with certain specimens going for well above 10x melt! Gonna be fun to see how it all shakes out.

That makes 2 of us. I think we are in "good company" with that statement. That may either help or hurt the auctions.

i see a lot of odds and ends bullion.

the only thing i saw interesting when glancing at the first two pages
of ebay auctions and this thread is the engelhard set shown in this thread.

everything else, to me personally, is quirky stuff that just does not
    get me excited.

wow, that is just sick (sick as in the NEW meaning for sick). It probably won't matter a whole lot, but I hope the recent up in silver spot helps out a bunch in the final tick-tocks of the auctions.

His engelhard 100 gram set is very nice indeed but my favorite from his collection are his 1/2 kilo old pour JM bars.

I tried to find pics of it but they are gone, perhaps Cars can post them.

  • Gee thanks everyone image. Actually there aren't many of those bars I have listed on eBay that I really liked. Some are them are very hard to find however. Most(65%) of my best items were sold privately to 6-7 other collectors I've met through my hunts. Of course I kept the best items for myself image. There were 30-40 pieces I just couldn't let go of. I decided it was not a good idea to have a bunch of $50-$600/oz silver in these uncertain times. Unfortunately there isn't really a large market for these items. If some coins were rare as some of the bars I had they would be worth multi thousand dollars but there just isn't the market for them. I feel as one day more collectors will surface.

I was toying with the idea of dedicating a website to bullion collecting. I even purchased a domain name. I actually started a website which also had a forum but it was mainly to sell the bars I had. The site was kinda cheesy so I shut it down after a week or so. I do plan on revisiting the idea as I Still own the Domain name.

I will still be picking up items that really strike me. Problem was I was buying everything under 1 oz for my collection, if I liked it or not. That kinda made me lose interest. My goal was to sell all the stuff I didn't really care for. My goal was to turn 500-600oz in silver into a kilo of Pd & 10 oz Au or Pt. After this batch is sold I should be Very close to that goal assuming everything goes for what I've estimated. Still have a few more items to get rid of after this batch. Then I can wait (hope) for metals to drop so I can spend my take image
    Its all relative

Most of that stuff didn't excite me much either, which is why I'm selling it.
