Is Ebay better than the BST?

On Tuesday of last week I decided I would get a certified basic set of the Lincoln Wheat cents. I've always loved the series and have a lot of raw wheats so I figured it made sense image

Anyway, I posted on the BST that I wanted to buy low end PCGS version of the coins so that I could get the set cheaper than sending in my own low-end raw ones. After TTT'ing for 3 days I received an offer on 2 coins which I took.

At the same time I was able to buy 32 coins on eBay for $19 or under including shipping (each), including 10 for under $10 each!

I then switched gears to the 4 keys that I don't have raw: 1909-S, 1909-S VDB, 1914-D, 1931-S. I posted on the BST that I would buy a PCGS version for $1,000 or less for each, maybe a little over $1,000 for a fairly priced coin. I TTT'd it for 2 days and received zero PM's other than a guy 3 days later that had an ANACS coin.

However, within these 2 weeks I was able to find all 4 coins on Ebay for "Greysheet ASK" or less including shipping.

In summary, is the BST a worse place to get coins than eBay? It seemed very much so for me.

Also, someone PM me if this was actually some sort of black listing that I'm under image

    Barry,

You're on everyone's Black list except the 2 guys that PM'ed you! image

I wrote down what I thought on Your Thread.
I also replied with the only coin that fit your criteria, but you never got back to me.

We also had a possible trade going about half a year ago, but you did not have time to check the coins I needed.....
    No biggie, just saying.....

Sorry I do see you would have added *ONE* coin to the BST total image

I tend to not read my own BST posts very often so I just noticed you posted there now image

I will note that the viewing rate on eBay is a lot higher than the BST.

Much, much higher. If your looking for a bigger audience eBay is the way to go. A lot of people here use the BST not only for good deals that would be hard to find elsewhere, but also reliable, secure, and friendly transactions.

For certified Lincolns, for sure, Ebay is a better place to look to buy coins than BST. Without specific coins at specific prices, there is a lot of effort involved to go back and forth and negotiate. Most sellers would prefer a quick and smooth transaction, like Ebay gives. On BST, probably 80% to 90% are looking to buy, not sell. So that only leaves a few people on BST actively scanning WTB posts, fewer still that have the Lincolns in stock, so I am not at all surprised at the results. Compare that to Ebay where there are a thousand times as many sellers, where all the Lincoln keys can be bought at any time, any day if a person has the bucks.

eBay is awful. Everyone will steal your money. And you for sure don't want to be looking for any MS 65+ Buffalo nickels in auction format as I'm pretty sure those sellers are thieves, rapist and murderers.

I have found the BST good for buying mainly bullion.. I have found great deals on Morgans as well.

The BST seems to be better for sellers than buyers for specific items.. If you had time to wait something
    would come up.

And the likely hood of getting screwed on a high dollar item off the BST is reduced compared to Ebay..

  • I feel I can trust the guys/gals more on the BST. ebay can be a crap shoot.
That said, you certainly do have vastly more availabilities on ebay.

  • eBay trumps the BST in selection (number of different items), but the BST beats eBay in almost every other aspect, including customer service.

I would rather sell on the BST if possible, but buy most of my coins off E-bay.(There is usually a selection of the specific coins that I am looking for at any given time)
    Trade $'s

I like the BST, but it it was re-designed with a somewhat inventory layout I think this would be great. For example just clicking a tab and seeing all the halves, and from there Proof Barbers. From there you can narrow in on an item and view the seller/offer. This would be awesome.
  • If I can find what I want on the BST board that is where I will always start, whether buying or selling. EBay is the choice of last resort and only if there is something I HAVE to have or sell.

Also, a blanket post that you want a coin or sell, without a price will largely go ingored.

    Ebay has prices.

If you want a rare coin, I guess the best venue is the one where you can find it.

Being the world leader in online auctions and markets, Ebay has an enormous selection of material available 7 X 24; the BST by it's very nature is much more limited and always will be. That said, I have never bothered to sell on Ebay, but have sold $thousands (and bought also) on the BST, with no problems. I realize I'm giving up some profit, but I like dealing with and chatting with the folks on the forum, and that to me is worth a lot. I realize if and when I ever choose to get rid of my piles of 'junk' and dreck that Ebay would probably be more suitable, as the forum crowd (being more sophisticated collectors) likes the nice stuff.

I may have coins that I'd sell if I didn't have to make an effort to do so. If I see someone looking on the BS&T I'm more likely to offer something simply because its less hassle and risk to do. eBay does usually have more choices to pick from as well as more potential buyers/sellers.

To be blunt many coins on ebay can be bought cheap, many are low end for the grade as well all ms63 Lincolns even in PCGS are not equal.
Eye appeal is very important for the keys it effects the value a great deal even in XF. Ebay there is a lot of dumping from dealers and others low end material is abundant even in slabs. If your very selective and are careful there are some good values. Buy good for grade coins that are attractive pay a little more its worth it. Grey sheet is a great level to buy but try to get real nice for grade keys at that level its not easy.

The BST I have had good results when I have bought each time actually was flawless. The BST wanted ADS though 50/50 I have bought this way a few times and was pleased, there are many that will waste your time too but overall its a good resource.

I would post again there are many here that I would buy from. Why not put a specific date and grade you want to buy , try it a few times is what I suggest.

I think the BST is much better.

    1. More upstanding and trustworthy buyers/sellers
2.Lots of great deals just have to be patient
    3. Don't have to deal with pages and pages of crap and or fake copied stuff.

    Hi.

I have had excellent results buying on eBay, no problems whatsoever with the coins I have purchased.

I have had a few instances of coins not being represented correctly on the BST ( description, images, and such )

    Just my 2 cents.

  • As a seller the BST can be slow. I generally list on BST for a week or two and if no takers then off to Ebay the items go. Sometimes I sell a few items on the BST and sometimes I sell none.

I have baught quite a few coins from the BST as well.

I have never done a BST transaction.

I have had several good eBay transactions... then again I dont trust sellers descriptions of coins. I only base bidding on photos and bid accordingly.

I could see someone who's a newb getting hurt on eBay in a hurry.

Your example is perfect! If some one posted that on the BST they would get run out on a rail. Buyer Beware!!!
