2 roll formative year sets still selling well

pitbosspitboss Posts: 8,643 ✭✭✭

I am just about sold out of sets and keep getting inquiries about more. From what I understand people are not finding them in any sets after 5/5 at all. This could change the overall perspective in the long range goal of collectors. I really feel that the bulk of these coins are in the hands of PCGS forum members and not the general collector at this point. If that is the case we could see a dramatic upturn in prices within the next few months.

What does everyone else think about this?

Are the 4/27, 4/28's doing anything, I got 5 of each collecting dust..
  • What's the recent sales price for a 4/29 box?
  • jessewvujessewvu Posts: 5,065 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have found most of varieties, except the WDDR-009 and 006. Anyone know what date boxes these are coming out of?
  • pitbosspitboss Posts: 8,643 ✭✭✭

I have not even looked through all the boxes that I have opened for anything other than the 001 and 002. They are just sitting there for me to do so once I find out what they are worth. I have about 80 boxes worth so it will be a real project sometime.

  • << <i>Are the 4/27, 4/28's doing anything, I got 5 of each collecting dust. >>

My 1st two 4/28 boxes had some 001's and 002's...my next four had ZERO DDR's

Two 4/29 boxes came up dry

I still have 8 boxes left...30 opened image
  • pitbosspitboss Posts: 8,643 ✭✭✭

That's precisely what I mean, I don't think there are as many of these as everyone thinks.
  • I just opened two boxes of the five 4/27 that I received, and there were about ten 1 & 2s in each box. I haven't check the other numbers in the two boxes I opened.

well, I backed up the truck about day 1 when these broke here on the forum. I picked up about 80 boxes dated 4/17, 4/28, 4/29, 4/30 for around $21 bucks each shipped. I have found about every variety so far except for some that are either way to hard to see, or just not in these boxes. I have found the WDDR-001, 002, 003, 004, 005, 006, 007, 008, 010, 011, and 012 to date. I have opened about 20 boxes, only looking through the P mint rolls. I have 4 or 5 rolls with DDR's showing on the end. I have one roll with a DDR-002 on one end and a DDR-003 on the other.

I have probably found about 6 full rolls of all DDR's and have only sold about 10 coins total. I am starting to go back through the rolls I opened early and have found a few more and am now picking out all the coins with cuds and die cracks. I will probably sell enough to cover my costs, however many that is, and then hold onto the rest until they are either worth nothing or big bucks.

This is the first time I have really roll searched, it's been fun and I think I am actually learning something doing it.

I will in time, probably this winter, go through mine also.

This coin forum has been my sole source for information and interest in acquiring examples of the various 2009 DDRcents. Pitboss and others have shared their insight which is much appreciated. My sense is that a high % of available boxes/coins have either been searched already or are being held by Forum members. LP2 boxes dated in 04/09 will appreciate once the varieties become better accepted. It would not suprise me if one or more coin magazine advertisers offer some of the more popular DDR's at retail. Ebay seems to be supporting the wave of large numbers of examples coming to market. Many of the Ebay sellers are newbies and can't wait to get $2 per Penny !! Fellow Forum members are well seasoned and will ultimately decide what various FY DDR's are worth. Wexler and Crawford are doing a great service as well. Many thanks from a dedicated WI Quarter collector !! Enjoy collecting coins !!

My sets are 5/4 so I may have just made it in. I don't plan on opening them though.
  • pitbosspitboss Posts: 8,643 ✭✭✭

I still have 22 unopened box's to put away for a while to see what happens. They are all prime dates!

And I now have a third roll with an error on the end. The other 2 have errors on both ends.
  • PapiPapi Posts: 1,189 ✭✭
I'm confused. Why does everyone seem to think these are only being bought by Forum members?

These were on the cover of Coin World, yes? Are all Coin World subscribers Forum members?

Have Coin World readers told family and friends about these errors? I think so.

I have a unopened roll with WDDR-009 on the end, but I bought it on Ebay, seller wouldn't tell the box date.
  • pitbosspitboss Posts: 8,643 ✭✭✭

They are now being bought by everybody but for the first few weeks PCGS members were the only one's that knew about them. They have most of them at this point because they bought most of the good boxes. Most of what you see on ebay now don't have anything good in them.
  • I'm glad I ordered these. Not only was my order placed within 12 minutes of the time they went on sale, but I still have them in the sealed shipping box image. I don't know the dates on them for the obvious reason, but I think I'll hold onto these for a long while until the majority have been picked over. Like many have said, there are only so many to pick through until there isn't much left.
  • pitbosspitboss Posts: 8,643 ✭✭✭

You are to be commended on having the will power to not open that box. I have a lot of prime date boxes but none in unopened mint boxes.
  • mikeygmikeyg Posts: 1,002

Some clarification please. When you talk about the date of your sets is that listed on the box somewhere or is it the ordered or shipping date?
  • PapiPapi Posts: 1,189 ✭✭
There are still good boxes available on Ebay, but the good dates are now selling around $30 or more.

I have many many unopened boxes, with the good dates. I suppose they'll only be worth the value of the possible error inside, and with some errors selling for $3....well ???

I wonder if the Mint is going to continue to sell LP2 after LP3 has been released.

According to the production totals I've seen there are 3 times as many LP2's as there are LP1's, and they are still being shipped.

Who knows how many have been opened.

  • pitbosspitboss Posts: 8,643 ✭✭✭

Read back on all of the forum messages going back a couple of months and you will see where the good boxes are. They range from a date of 4/17 to 4/30 . I have had my best luck with 4/17 and 4/30 boxes, I hope this helps you . There are still more to be found but don't be sucked into buying anything out of that date range .

I've been pulling these out of the 4/16 boxes:

I have not even looked for any other errors yet other than 001 and 002. After opening 85 rolls, I sure do have a lot of coins to look through this winter.

    80 or 85

  • << <i>I've been pulling these out of the 4/16 boxes: image >>

I like that one. I found two but don't remember the date. thanks for reminding me, I have 12 boxes w/that date. Staying home today,
probably open a box or two of those.

when the discovery was made on this forum, I bought roughly 100 boxes at around $20 each in the next couple of days Very good dated boxes. Have only gone through a dozen. It's a heck of a lot of fun, I wish I had more time. As a result, yes I think forum members got the early datae boxes off ebay first.

I even got a dino lite and saw stuff on the coins I've never seen before....such as tiny die cracks. That is a cool microscope. Never spent so much time with a magnifying glass/dino light and it's been very interesting.

I'm an optimist: I think all 4 issues will increase over their issue price, and the LP2's...due to their chance or errors... will catch up to the LP1's once ebay clears out the impatient sellers of their errors....

I found a single example of that one in a box dated 4/15
  • pitbosspitboss Posts: 8,643 ✭✭✭

I never bought any 4/16 boxes. They did not appear in the 4/17 boxes.
  • pitbosspitboss Posts: 8,643 ✭✭✭

Just opened another box of 4/21 9774 and found 5-DDR002's and 2-001's. I can't seem to understand why these are so scattered throughout the date range of 4/17 to 4/30. I have not found these in those particular boxes before.

Kind of interesting that people find this crack more exciting than our most beloved President with a mutant hand with 6 fingers.

It is a nice Crack. I think a lot of folks think it is better because they can see it a mile away and they think that is what makes it interesting. Personally I like to examine the coins and find all kinds of mistakes the mint makes. Not just DD's or Cracks but any flaw. I would like to find one that is Rotated, that would be a screamer.

I find it interesting 'cuz I only have 4 of them vs. hundreds of the others types

I wouldn't exactly call any of them "exciting", but "very interesting"...yes

I placed it #3 on my favorite type list

  • 1st submission: 24 coins CDDR 001,002,003 (should ship back the end of next week)

    2nd " : 46 coins CDDR 001,002,003,004,009,014,

    Preparing 3rd submission

    All cherrypicked

I have maybe a hundred more of different types worthy of submission and approx. 250 more that are either spotted or have some detracting marks

Two rolls with end roll DDR's

12 boxes to open (good dates)

  • pitbosspitboss Posts: 8,643 ✭✭✭

Why didn't you go with bulk rate? It' only $10 a coin as opposed to $15.

I have about 160 001's and 50 002's 10 009's and quite an assortment of small stuff. The only ones I have picked out came while I was searching for the 001's and 002's, so I am sure I have missed a lot. I do have 3 rolls with errors showing and 18 good date rolls unopened.
I need to get my dino lite set up a little better so I can see these errors. I hate that flexible stand that it comes with.

  • << <i>I need to get my dino lite set up a little better so I can see these errors >>

I have been using a 10x loop and a bright light source.

My feeling is that if I need a microscope to see it then it's not worth the effort. That's just me....image

Also.....maybe I will bulk ship the next group
  • pitbosspitboss Posts: 8,643 ✭✭✭

As soon as mine get back, which should be either today or tomorrow, I am going to put another batch together. I don't feel a need to rush as I feel the prices haven't started to climb yet. We probably have a couple of more months to go before they do.

I sold a couple of more today. I am down to 6 4/21's that I am willing to sell but the price is going up today . I really don't care about selling them anyway. Will hold 12 good date boxes for myself.
