Looks like I am done with Ebay...

The new changes have finally caught up with me.

Just last week I was still able to put up auctions specifying "NO PAYPAL. Payment by Check or M.O. only, please."

But today I tried to list and was hit with a "YOU MUST CHOOSE AN ELECTRONIC PAYMENT OPTION (So WE can get more of YOUR $$$)" message.

No thanks EBAY. I'll GIVE my stuff away before I'll ever use Paypal again!

I hope others feel the same. Then more will folks will come into the shop and sell me stuff over the counter instead of trying to sell on E-bay themselves. Helps business, then at the same time, it reduces the number of sellers I have to compete with selling on there!

You don't want to give money away to PayPal, but you'll sell on Teletrade who takes a higher %? Interesting logic.....

What about items under 10K? Most of the coins on eBay are under 10K... & what about the buyers premium that most Auction Houses charge? I'll stick with eBay, thank you.

bushmaster8, while I do understand where you're coming from......as a buyer on Ebay, it's much, much nicer and easier dealing with sellers that accept Paypal. I'll still mail out money orders here and there if I absolutely have to, but it really is a pain once you're spolied by those instant payment transactions.

Since I am able to still offer all three payment options (check, Money Order and Paypal) is the Ebay written plan to ONLY have electronic payment? When I say written, I mean its going to happen, its been announced, and they have an effective date.

Along the lines of the BST, it basically sucks too in its current format and needs to be revamped before more sellers will go there. (ie put the auction listings some place else.)

The effective date is Oct. 20, 2008. eBay says they're not going to remove listings for including an offer to accept checks/money orders until January 15, 2009. Whether or not that puts your listings at risk before then is anybody's guess.

I read in another thread that you can still add, "Will accept MO or personal checks as payment" in your auctions.

After further review (and at least on PM on the topic), doesn't TT take the 15% buyer's fee which then means they are taking 19% of hammer, which is more than eBay/PapPal?

TT takes a 15% buyer fee with no negotiation on this. Plus 4+% seller fee.

Pay-pal is handy and convenient. I don't mind the changes at all.

I also quit selling on E-Bay. Their feedback rules and push of free shipping have pushed buyers to expect free shipping. Items under $50 don't make sense to sell on e-bay anymore (That was most of what I sold). Couple that with too many bargin hunters and expectations that coins should be in a buyers hands in 2 days (I ship next day and still get slammed for slow shipping), it's not the place for me to sell.

Paypal to me was and is a good thing except when people use it to charge you back, which happened a few times to me. As a buyer on E-Bay I would NOT buy unless the seller took paypal.

You would think E-Bay stock should do well in a down economy....people can sell their junk quickly for cash if they are hurting, but it doesn't seme to worj that way. Maybe their new policies are not having the desired effect??? Unless they intended to piss off the sellers.

Interesting, I took a few months off and then for the last month and a half have been selling strong on e-bay. No dings for charging actual shipping cost either. I wonder if e-bay shoppers are starting to come around?

I haven’t accepted paypal since Aug of 06' due to a couple of scams which cost me about 11k in false chargebacks.

Looks like at the end of the selling season I too will depart feebay for good especially after this latest episode I had this week.

I've written some fairly extensive guides on ebay about this issue we're currently ranked #46 with those guides you guys should take the time to read the crap I've had to deal with over the last couple of years on fleabay.

Its amazing how no attorney general, ftc, or other agency has stopped ebay from making everyone accept paypal. This is such of a blatant and common sense violation of the american free capitalistic society. Do you know why they put the FREE SHIPPING sellers first on the best match? Because they never made any commission on the final value fees off of s&h. What a bunch of pigs, they try and act like they are doing it for a better buyers experience. A buyer can make his own adult decision whether or not he or she wants to pay by check and they don't need dictator meg whitman or whoever runs this sorry outfit to tell them how you have to pay.

Paypal is ok on items $300 or less, but on expensive items it is too easy to cheat the system. I could have 1200 fb and someone who has 50 fb sells me a $4000 coin. If I'm a crook or an unethical person I could make up a story and email the seller something like this, "hi, I got the package today and the wrong coin was in it, I paid $4000 for a $50 coin, how do you want to handle this? " The seller swears he sent the right coin and he really did, but it is my 1200fb against his 50 fb, so now the seller is in fear that paypal will dip into his account and give the buyer his $4000 back, so he decides to settle out of this fear and ends up giving the buyer a $2000 refund for what is basically extortion. Of course, he could fight the dispute, but who is paypal going to side with?? Most likely they would give the buyer $200o back and compromise. Obviously, the seller never did anything wrong and is getting royally screwed by an unethical dishonest buyer, but how would paypal know otherwise. People shouldn't be forced to take paypal and most people who don't want to take paypal have likely had bad experiences with paypal in the past and it should be their right not to do business with them if they so choose.

Also economically forcing everyone to accept paypal is costing consumers millions each year, if not billions, since there is a 3% paypal fee that would be non-existent if the transaction was done with a check. Someone selling a $2000 coin can afford to sell the coin $60 less with no pee pee pal involved. Where are the attorney generals at???

I agree with everything you stated. Another scenerio in the fraud example you give is if buyer filed a PP claim and won PP would tell buyer to send item back to seller for full refund. They do not verify what you send back. As long as you have tracking that shows returned delivery they will refund your money no questions asked.

As for "People shouldn't be forced to take paypal and most people who don't want to take paypal have likely had bad experiences with paypal in the past and it should be their right not to do business with them if they so choose."
Everyone has this choice, its called sell you stuff elsewhere, You are not forced to accept paypal, You are only forced if you sell on eBay.
    Its all relative

It certainly is NOT looking good selling on ebay nowadays. With the proverbial deck stacked against sellers, increased final value fees (12% on fixed priced listings and right at 9.25% for auctions),
insertion fees etc AND what PayPal TAKES all mixed together with the fact that The Economy is down, the so-called highers up at ebay are showing how truly stupid they are! To top it all of they push PayPal down our throats along with FREE S/H, which means sellers are selling even MORE in Red numbers.

Browse around - make note of the garbage being offered along with with tons of replicas. Ebay has stripped sellers and rendered us defenseless. It's just not worth risking any high priced item in such a crummy environment. If you don't take care of your Mules (sellers) the cart won't move and ALL the potential buyers in the world then become as useless as teets on a boar hog! If you have no sellers - buyers are useless!

Add all this up and of course the fact that ebay goes out of their way to TELL buyers not to worry about getting negged (even when justifiably so) thereby giving them the Green light to steal our goods, file bogus chargebacks and leave negative feedback on the way out, to boot and it quickly becomes abundantly clear that Now is a real good time just to put it all in "Park"! HEY! If you're gonna DO ME, at least kiss me on the way out!

It's just a bit much. I don't need this at all, nor does anyone else here. As such ebay has successfully shot themselves in the head and has turned into a pit filled with trash, second rate, problematic crap & "replicas" or counterfeits! Just who in the Hell is manning the wheel at ebay anyway?

To think that people actually get paid to help ebay commit suicide is beyond all comprehension.
They seem to have a Death Wish and are doing a fine job of making this wish Reality!

PayPal would still do quite well with a flat 2% as would FeeBay with 5%. When they figure this out, particularly now with the economy being in the state it is in and going to get worse, they could turn themselves around and prosper because many people are looking for a place to sell off non-essentials (luxuries)! The greedier ebay gets - the more down the tubes they go! Maybe SOMEONE in charge just MAY have an Epiphany here soon before it's too late. This new method does not & will not work!

Greed is doing a fine job of sealing ebay's own Death Certificate ! How fricking STUPID.
Meg knew what the deal was & got out right on time!

Personally, I'd like to tell the HMFIC @ ebay that he & his ship of fools are total dumbasses!

Conclude Rant! image No - not yet~

I am done with EBAY even though I have been with them from back when you had to mail them a CHECK to cover the listing fees to run your auctions.

IMO this is due to the cash back program and makes the prices won somewhat meaningless. When this promotion is over we'll see the real numbers. BTW as a buyer I always pay with paypal, there's a lot of ripoff sellers on there too but I understand the sellers point of view too.

It seems that the bean counters are making the decisions at ebay. They have an important place in all businesses but oft times bean counters fail to account for market conditions. Perhaps that is a little unfair - its just that the changes seem myopic and lack strategic insight.

Like when the coffee industry decided that they could increase their margins by diluting their product with inferior quality beans. Short term, profits went up but eventually the consumer realized that they did not like the taste of the product.

Sheesh, you don't try very hard do you? I have no clue either since I don't visit eBay much; I just asked the question. Had I known the numbers I would have stated them. With all the news stories about people pawnin stuff; its probably safe to assume that some are turning to eBay instead. For all the reasons stated here, as a seller I wouldn't touch eBay with a 10 foot pole.

    Help me out here....

Situation: I have a coin that is a $12k coin and put it for sale on Teletrade

Manny Money buys my coin for the true value of 12k which includes a 15% buyers fee

    Cash to me: approx $9800 (12k - 15% -4%)

Isn't $2200 a lot to pay to sell a coin???

(not that I would have a 12k coin to worry about)

Total Ebay and PayPal fees would be $589 (Powerseller discount) or $631 (no discount) (BIN of 12K)

    What am I missing here????

Ehh, eBay's alright. They provide a service and they're entitled to charge for that service. I don't use it as much as I used to which is why I'm not as up in arms about it as some others on here. I sell the occasional coin or some old clothes every once in awhile, so the fees are pretty minimal. Usually, I can get more on eBay than from dealers, so the fees don't bother me. What does bother is me is not allowing checks and money orders. eBay is shooting themselves in the foot on that one. I teach an eBay class at work and many of the people who take it are a little older and not as tech-savvy, so the Paypal issue tends to dissuade them from even signing up for eBay. I guess the eBay people figured they'd make more money with the Paypal fees, so the loss of a few customers is no big deal, but it's a real shame.

I'll still use eBay when I find it practical, but for coins I always go to the BST first...and then some dealers I like...and then eBay.

Positive BST transactions with: too many names to list! 36 at last count.
