The Official LA Lakers 2008-2009 run for the NBA Championship thread

bman90278bman90278 Posts: 3,453 ✭✭✭
Hey Laker fans where are you? Although the Celtics crushed the Lakers in the Finals they have a great chance to really improve this year. Bynum is now healthy. Kobe has learned how to get everyone involved. Gasol now can play power forward. The Fish is smart and a great vetran to have on the team. Their bench is deep and getting more experience...Farmar is getting some quality minutes. Odom is a great guy off the bench. Ariza could be the surprise of the season. I don't know about Walton, but the bench has gotten over 35 points in both games and the Phil Jackson is starting to teach the Lakers how to play some Defense. Or I should say " The Lakers are listening to Jackson about playing Defense".

All in all, I would tend to believe that the road to the finals will have to go through LA as long as everyone stays healthy. That's always the big question in sports.

Lets see some Laker fans chime in.

  • they lost turiaf in the off season, but that front court of bynum, gasol and odom looks great (and yes, i actually would rather have odom than artest....now i would rather have marion over odom, but that trade didnt gain much traction after the first few week or so of the offseason). if they can just bench fisher and let farmar start, that would be one heckuva starting five.

After last nights win the Lakers are now 3 and 0. Much better start than last year. With the depth the Lakers have on their bench, it's actually allowing Kobe to get some rest instead of always playing his 40 plus minutes every game.
  • Having Bynum and Ariza back make us a much better defensive team

5-0. The march to 78-4 continues.

There are no weaknesses on this team one through twelve, and they are a young cohesive unit.

Down 16 to Houston (the second best team in the west) last night, they won by about 28...

They are going to be special, barring a season ending injury to Kobe, Gasol, or Bynum.

I think that record is not a realistic goal for the Lakers or any team, but they have really improved since last season. I really think their bench this year will be the big difference as we get into the playoffs.

Back to back road wins against the Western Conference elite, Dallas and New Orleans, on consecutive nights. Contributions are coming from every player on the roster.

(I do have to say that Chris Paul and the Hornets made quite a run late in the game to cut what had been a 20 point lead most of the game to 3 in the final two minutes.)

    The march continues to 7-0................

And that's with the Lakers only playing well for parts of the game too. They started off slow...Let the other team get their way back in before they finished them off. Seems like they are much better than last year and will only get better. Yes it's early in the season but encouraging.

  • When they play team defense the way they've been playing this year it's gonna be tough to beat them

Saturday morning bump for the 13-1 Los Angeles Lakers. Of course they started 16-1 back in the Shaq years and ended up with 58 wins I believe, but the Lakers seem much stronger than last year.

Lakers are now 17-2 and one win away from their best start ever and seem to cruising. Still very early in the season but it's still a great start.

Well, I totally missed yesterdays Lakers vs the Celtics game because of Xmas commitments, but I'm very happy to see they won the game. The Lakers clearly wanted to win and stepped up against a hot team that was clearly due for a loss. It's still too early to tell how far the Lakers will go this year, but they should be better than last year.

Anyone catch the highlights from last nights Lakers win??? Paul Gasol was on a fast break and dribbled the ball between his legs and made an awesome pass to get the assist. It certainly wasn't smooth like Kobe, but it was cool.

The Lakers seem to be cruising again.

Another good win by the Lakers last night and 38 points from their bench shows their great depth they have this year.
  • Lakers are whuppin it, I know.

Sad, but the closest I can get to playing lakers celtics is on NBA Live 07 for psp. I havent kept up with newer NBA games, any good ones?

    6 in a row, 27 and 5.

The road to 77 and 5 is intact!

Let's see now, No Z, no Delonte West, Lakers had ax to grind since they had lost something like 5 in row to Cavs, Lakers were at home.....think we should all wait awhile before crowning the next NBA champ. Might be the Lakers, might be the Cavs, the Celtics, the Pistons, who knows.....

I honestly believe it was a nice win for the Lakers but not a great win....that will have to come later in game 7 of the finals....when hopefully both teams have all their players.

OK, Lets see....Well Walton has been hurt for a few weeks, last night was his first night suited up and did not play. Farmar is still on the DL and he's been one of Lakers key players. Odom had a hurt knee and just came back last night....Vujacic has a negging injury and has a hurt brain actually worse (Phil Jackson said last week that Sasha plays on the seat of his pants and needs to start using his brain). Also, the Lakers big guy Bynum (I've noticed it myself and have heard lots of reports from Lakers experts stating that something seems to be wrong with him as he's not playing as strong and as at the same speed as last year before his big injury.)

So what I'm saying is all teams get injuries and that's why you play with a team. So the team who's best, the strongest in the playoffs, the healthiest, the best depth on the bench, etc and wins the playoffs is the better team.

Hang in ther Al, if you are a Cavs fan I say congrats to your team, but you need to worry about the Celtics and beat them before you worry about the Lakers. image

I hear ya, there are other things going on with the Cavs also that I didn't mention such as Lebron having been sick the last week, along with Big Ben but like you say, we can only hope that everyone is healthy come playoff time. My biggest hope is that the Celtics pick up Marbury....I still think he would do more bad then good.

The Lakers beat the Spurs yesterday and had control of the game. I really don't see where the Spurs were even in the game. It seemed at times the Lakers were getting close to busting it open and getting over a 20 point lead then the Spurs would get a few little runs and get the lead back to 10 or 12 points. Either way, very nice win for the Lakers.
  • bman90278bman90278 Posts: 3,453 ✭✭✭
Well the Lakers just ran into what I hope is their low point of the year with the injury to Bynum's knee. I hope he bounces back and that it's not as bad as the tests show.

Time for the Lakers bench to step it up now.

61 points is the most ever at the legendary Madison Square Garden.

It sort of reminded me of the game a few years back where Kobe had 60 after three quarters and Phil sat him for the 4th.

Or the same scenario with 50+ the same year.

    Or of course, the 81...

I wasn't online this week but I had to give a shout out to the Lakers for their road trip! What an exciting game against the Celtics the other night. Playing without the big guy and seeing Bryant missing so many shots and then coming up big down the stretch is big. It might have been a OT win by a point, but its still a W.

The Cavs are next I hope.
  • GO LAKERSSS!!!!! great roadtrip thus far........sunday in bron's house!.....which will become kobes!!!

Coming from a Cavs fan, the Lakers are the one to beat right now. Cavs couldn't match up with Odom. They are playing defense. Oh well, these games are fun to watch and the better team won today. Hopefully the playoffs are just as exciting.

The Lakers seem to be ready for the playoffs. The team will get some rest and has been playing fairly well...The big guy Andrew Bynum came back and looks great. I listened to Mitch Kupchak on the radio and he said that they made sure Andrew had plenty of extra time off to get healthy and he looks much farther along than they had hoped for.

With Andrew and Ariza both healthy the Lakers are looking good going in. Shannon Brown was a steal and will help against Big/Strong point cards like Deron Williams. Should be fun.

Western division not as strong as recent years and Portland has made its move and could make things interesting in the second round.

    Go Lakers!
