The joys of retail.

Had two seemingly nice little old ladies in the store this afternoon. I believe they are sisters. They had some gold 100 Coronas they had inherited. One puts five of them on a tray, I say we will pay $900-something each, and she says OK. I write a check for $4600-something.

The other one puts four of them on a different tray, I say the price is the same, and that comes to $3600-something. She snaps at me "Why am I getting less????" I calmly point out that she only had four coins, while the first lady had five. She says "Oh."

You should have responded that you just bought 5 and don't really need any more so they have less value to you know. image

    funny story....

    here's mine,

when I appraised this lady's ring (and she was sitting at my desk with me in my office) I first cleaned her ring in an Ultrasonic cleaner (which was 5 feet away, at another desk). When I returned with the cleaned ring (which took all of three minutes) she accused me of switching her diamond because now her ring (to quote her)..."It can't be my diamond because this one looks so different than before" image

Probably was the first time the ring was cleaned in thirty years.

Lesson learned - I moved the Ultrasonic cleaner to my main desk.

Another customer yesterday had a bag of silver quarters and a man's wedding ring set. We agreed upon the rate we were going to pay for the silver times face value, and I ran them through the coin counter. I announced "That's $62.50." She loudly said "No it's not, there's 250 coins there!"

I calmly took out a calculator, multiplied $62.50 times four quarters per dollar, and it came out to 250 coins. She asked why did I do it that way, and I said that since we were paying X amount times face value I had to determine the face value. She said "Oh."

I then figured out what we would pay for the rings, and we bought everything. Then she asked for a copy of the purchase ticket, which I gave her, and she said "Now I can show my ex-husband what his wedding rings were worth!"

Fraud Alert to pawn shops, coin and bullion dealers and related businesses.

A gang of old ladies have been victimizing pawn brokers and coin dealers in the North Easter states. The method of operation is:

Two benign looking little old lady types will enter the place of business. They are dressed in old fashioned clothing and walk slowly with a slight forward stoop. Both have gray hair and wear wire rim glasses. The tell the store staff they have a few gold coins they inherited from their father and want to sell them. One of the ladies will place five or six gold coins on the counter – usually Austrian 100 crona, but Mexican 50 pesos, British sovereigns and US $20 have also been used. All except one of the coins are actually high quality gold plated fakes made in China.

If store personnel accept the coins as real, one of the ladies will accept payment. At that point the other lady places several more coins on the counter, but usually a different quantity or design. When she is offered a different amount, the two will argue in an attempt to distract personnel from carefully checking the second group of coins. Once an offer is made, it is reluctantly accepted and the two criminals leave, often while continuing their argument. An accomplice is waiting nearby with a car to take them to a branch of the issuing bank where the checks are cashed. It is only later that store personnel realize they have purchased worthless replicas.

Descriptions vary, but the perpetrators always work in pairs and present the appearance of harmless little old ladies.

    Missing Persons Alert
The Death Valley Senior Center reported that six elderly female residents are missing and presumed to have escaped. Their families have been notified and will continue to receive bills for care center services until the escapees are accounted for.

I have always felt that the best parents are the ones who aggravate and kid around with their kids. Builds character and personality.

Honestly, I don't think being a senior had anything to do with it... if it was two young ladies, two middle aged men, or a '20-something' couple... it would have still been funny.

The story's true and we can't reduce all humorous situations to "a person and a person enter a place" just to be politically correct.
