Sacagawea Mint rolls

coolestcoolest Posts: 2,281 ✭✭✭
Can anyone tell me what the values are for Mint wrapped Sacagawea rolls? It looks like some rolls are selling for over $100. Can you tell me if some dates are selling for more than other dates?

How much premium? And are the other rolls going for anything above face value?

I think you'll get a handle on the premiums by checking the eBay completed auctions for the rolls. You'll be suprised at what some of these rolls are bringing....

  • This person has some rolls, and they seem to be going for a pretty nice premium thus far:

You do realize that face value is $50?
  • IMO, with the business strike Sacagawea's being the lowest mintage coin set with a circulating design of the past 100 years, even now the supply of BU rolls is clearly not enough. Once the Sacagawea is re-issued for circulation next year with a different reverse annualy more collectors may want to start the series. Also since the Native American $1 Coin Act requires the Sacagawea dollar be struck in an amount equal to at least 20% of the yearly Presidential dollar mintage, the Sacagawea minatge of coming years will be much much higher, making the previous years keys to the series. For example the current final mintage of the first two 2008 Presidential dollars is 240M assuming the final 2008 Presidential dollar mintage is 400M the legislation would require at least 80M Sacagawea Golden dollars be struck for that year. Compare that figure with the average 3M annualy currently struck for collectors since 2002.

    OK I have some info:

I found some auctions that have 2-3 days left and here are the current bids for a two roll Mint wrapped set
    2001P/D = $93
    2002P/D = $80
    2004P/D = $185 (9days left)
    2003P/D = $182
    2006P/D =$127

It makes me wonder about the final bids

    You make some good points.
You say 3M coins for collectors. Isn't <3M the total mintage and the amount for collectors actually much smaller. And if you combine this with the fact that people tend not to want to pay $35+ for $25 worth of coins that you know the mint is still making good money if they sold for $25. The amount of available mint rolls may be very small.

If anyone is interested here are some realized values.

    mint roll 2003-P $127
    mint roll 2004-P $119
    mint roll 2004-D $125
    mint roll 2006-D $82

Great, and to think I've been unwrapping them to use as money from the tooth fairyimage
  • If they are still sealed in the white mint issued box, the prices are even higher... though they do take up much more room to store!

The 2001 P & D issues will easily sell for close to $200 each if they are still in mint issued boxes. The 2002 P & D will be a little lower, closer to $150 each. The prices fall as you get closer to 2007.

2000 P & D seem to be more plentiful and sell for much less than the 2001 and 2002s.

So if I'm reading this right, the 2008 rolls will probably be normal mintage this year right? I was thinking about buying some extra ones to see what they do. Any thoughts?

I have every year so far. I didn't buy the 2008's, any word on how many 2008's they have made so far? That would also be neat if they had the Sacagaweas available for face value from the mint, I like the design a lot better than John Quincy Adams.

Does anyone have any what the mint sales figures are like for the Sac. mint rolls of various years?
I assume most of the small mintage's were sold in bags or issued into circulation (however short-lived)

So...................the earlier Mint-wrapped rolls have a premium. Not being flippant, but why?

I saved unc rolls in plastic until 2004, then I started keeping the Mint-wrapped ones.

Should I be looking through the non-Mint rolls for high grades, and keep the Mint-wrapped ones intact?

Does anyone know what the 2009 Reverse will look like? I have not gotten any dated past 2001, myself, but the singles seem like they might be cheap and easy ways to add a complete collection with very little work.

Compare that figure with the average 3M annualy currently struck for collectors since 2002.

Does that 3 million number include coins in the annual Mint Sets? Or are they in a separate "satin finish" category?

Last year I bought a mint wrapped roll of 2005-D sacs for 23 dollars with 3 dollar shipping...Off Ebay of course..image

I have wondered the same thing myself. The reports from the mint indicate somewhere near 3 million each year from each mint, but I have not seen any information about the split between standard uncircs in rolls and the ones in the mint sets. Perhaps the data will be more clear starting in 2005 when the satin finish was introduced... I've never found any detailed information about this.

That is less than face by my calculations.

    23 + 3 = 26

That would be one dollar more than face.
