Is a Proof 70 Still a Proof 70 with a spot? See Pic

I would have to say that it is not. If a spot formed then the coin is not "perfect". I believe PCGS has some sort of guarantee for things like this.

Beautiful picture. What spot? If there's a spot, then the answer is an emphatic NO.

    Maybe it's a perfect spot

took awhile for me to see the location of the spot. But once I found it, it became very distracting to me. I would not want to pay 70 money for a spotted coin.

    See spot?
    I can't spot the spot?
    Can you spot the spot?
    What spot?

I do see a reddening on the back of the cent, in the center. Is that the spot?

    Thanks,

    Chris

Yes that spot, it was from if I remember a rinse that the US Mint used, which tended to cause these on the 1999 proofs

looks like attractive target toning from here.....but if there is a detracting spot visable in hand then no, the coin can no longer be considered a 70 (perfect and free of defects)

I agree, it is toning not what we normally refer to as a spot. Carbon spots or milk spots can actually be harmful to the surface. These would drop the grade significantly. I don't think your toning spot effects the surface and should maintain the 70 grade. You will have to check NGC's written description to see if toning is aloud for a 70 grade. It's impossible to stop so I don't see how it would effect it.

NGC's guarantee for copper is also troublesome as it only seems to apply to coins that have been slabbed for at least 10 years.

I would like to see a high magnification of the 'spot'... there is a difference between toning and a spot.... if truly a contaminant, affecting the surface of the coin, I would send it back for review... Cheers, RickO

Send it back for review?!? The thing is a 70!
How about you sell it to one of the many suckers out there that cherish things like "70" graded coins from 1999.
As was menioned in an earlier reply, just tell them it's a "perfect" spot. Or just show them the label, that's the real value here anyways.
  • You need to send that crappy looking coin to me. And I will pop one out of my 99 proof set and send it to you..
It doesn't have that crappy tone thing on the surface...image

this happens to lots of lincoln proofs, very likely turned in the holder.

So would it be pretty funny if that happened with a PCGS holder?

I guess all I would say is that I would not pay 68 ultra money for that coins. How disappointing. And I bet NGC doesn't stand behind that coin at all.

Another reason not to chase the 70's IMHO.

Now that you mention it, I have a spot on my favorite shirt.

I know what your going through. It sucks. Purchased with no spot, housed in Intercept shield, then out

of the blue, the dreaded spot rears it's ugly head.

It was one of 90 I believe, now it's no longer a 9. I'm hoping the spot grows a bit, covering the profile, won't look as bad.

ask PCGS about the $40,000 PF70 penny that they had to pay to buy back due to it turning horribly ugly. Copper coins don't stay "perfect" forever, and slab them as such is only asking for trouble.
