A lesson to be learned

  • Congratulations on the 100!
  • Leia, I understand you have been on ebay for a while. So have I.

First, the fact the bidder has bidded on other items...is not proof he is not a shill. Con artists are much smarter today. So personally, I do not know if I was shilled or not, but I do not see it matters, as I noted, the auction did leave a bad taste in my mouth and I feel I was ripped off a couple bucks...nothing serious mind you, but such things will make me more cautious when bidding.

"How is a seller to know that any bid that is placed is placed with the intent of never paying?"

Every case is different, I am talking directly about this case. I think anyone can see the bidder is not wanting to win items, bidding 0.49 and 0.99 amounts, and stopping once the previous bidder hits his max, while ignoring like cards ending for less money.

Anyway, I am not asking you to agree with me. I was stating a couple things, I feel I was ripped off and the seller will likely lose future money because of it. It is highly unlikely the seller did not notice the 1000+ bids the bidder made...again with no mission to win the card.

Sniping is definitely the better way to go on most cards. However, on cards that sell for under $5....which is 90% of the cards related to this case, then it is just as typical that the first $3 bid will win.

Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

Your entire post was well written and I agree with you, it seemed like a lot of shilling to me JMO. But WHY, WHY, WHY grade a modern common card that will sell for $5-7 bucks??? Unless your doing it for your PC/set collector, doesn't seem like a good ROI and quite honestly a waste of $$$ when you factor in the costs of grading/listing/shipping etc......

I think many sell the cards that you see for 5 to 7 dollars in the hope that they get 1 PSA 10 that pays for all
    of it.

All it takes is for one PSA 10 to fetch 500.00 to offset all those break evens.

    Good for you.

Wow! And I thought the BGS thread went awry.

One thing I've learned in all of my years is that what oft times appears to be fact is not always the case. I've also learned that no matter how certain you are of something, no matter how you explain it, someone will find a gap in the logic and dispute the facts or create a new twist.

    Some simple rules of etiquette:

    1. Private Messages should ALWAYS stay private unless permission is given for them to be made public.
    2. No person or screenname should be used when making accusations unless the accusor is quite prepared to legally prove the accustations (and given the nature of this forum, the accusor may not be given the chance).
    3. When a disagreement reaches the point of impasse, man-up and let it die. We're all too stubborn to have our mind changed and attempting to do so only fuels the fire.
    4. When providing some simple rules of etiquette, expect to be blasted.

This thread is a prime example of egos getting in the way of discussion. Its not about who is right anymore, but who can get the last dig . . .

Very true Steve. It is not a rare thing to see some cmodern ommon or $0.25 going for several hundred.

Steve, I certainly agree with you, but my point was in this case/original thread of the alleged shill/seller who has numerous modern 10's that were selling for $5-7 a piece (maybe a few bucks more) it does not make sense to me to spend the $$$ to grade them and other associated costs. Of course, there is the diamond in the rough that will fetch the pretty penny but grading a 1989 UD Kevin Mass (for example) does not make sense to me unless you are putting the set together for example. Again, I am not arguing with you at all, just sharing my opinion. I have not looked at the final prices the shiller/seller fetched but what I saw last night just made me wonder.

I was just speaking in general as to why someone may do this. In the case you describe I too am at loss.

Unless they are getting these cards graded for 2.00 each and with shipping they are in for 3-4 dollars maybe?

maybe that is why they need to shill it up to 5 -7 lol

  • << <i>It appears that the shilling thread was deleted (and rightfully so)

Before someone makes a claim that sellers are shilling and names them
they better be pretty sure of what they say. Also, it would be wise to
leave out SMR advertisers when mentioning names. That can get you into some serious
trouble as your accusations could impede on their lively hood and you could be sued.
For run of the mil ebay sellers I don't see them suing but even there it is best to be 100%
sure before you make accusations lest they be considered defamatory.
Sometimes we feel we are 100% right on something yet we can be proved wrong.

    Just a thought fellows.

Your always a cool guy Mike, and you never pull anything like this with anybody. I have never tried to start any trouble here. Its always been me responding to some garbage that was trown my way, not me starting something with somebody on this board.

    "Mad As A Hatter."

The hatters became mentally ill, due to the large amounts of mercury
they were exposed to. Hats were formed in vats of mercury, and the
hatters put their hands in those vats. Mercury destroys/alters brain cells
much faster than alcohol and marijuana does.

"Told you to lay off the tuna for a while."

    /////////////////////////////////////////////

The mercury intake from a boatload of tuna
is FAR less than a hatter was exposed to in
    one-hour on the job.

The alleged benefits of the oils in the fish
FAR outweigh ANY risk of harm.

IS this what happens when I vacate for a day or so? The only way to prove there was shill is if the seller resells the same card. Even then they could just say it was cosigned again in the next auction. Rules of thumb
    Ebay
    -Snipe

    Major auction houses
-Place your highest and best bid first, that way the 10% increments dotn screw u in the end. IF you pay your high amount, remeber there is a 20% buyer premiuim and RIDICULOUS shipping charges, so take all that into account with your initial bid. When you do get outbid, it wont really make sense to get into a pissing contest with another buyer, that 10% next bid increment, would be too much, IF you placed you highest and best bid FIRST.

I missed the shill thread form the other night
