This is a redo of a poll I did a number of years ago....Wondering which source got the highest percentage of your coin $$$ this year. I'd welcome your comments!

    It was a Heritage year. Columbian,Roanoke,Alabama,Norfolk,Isabella,Gettysburg, and Texas. All bought from their Signature auctions.

    I was a net seller this year, but the mint wound up with more purchases than other sources.

    I have spent some with internet dealers
    Also some on E-Bay.
    But by far I spent more at coinfest. The first show I had been to in a few years.

    My last purchase was from the BST Forum, courtesy of cartwheel. A wonderful Morgan purchase, and a Board Member that I will make future purchases with again during 2008

    Next medal specialists

    I have assembled over 400 medals,

    one hundred of which, have HK numbers. These

    all had to meet three criteria:

    1. Scarce to rare

    2. Beautiful design

    3. The highest or next to
    highest available grade

    A great number are sterling or silver plate
    14 St Louis Expo 1904 medals from 299 thru 304. MS-65 to MS-66
    many examples of the 50 dollar gold piece type medals.

    most of my funds went to high grade CC dollars and GSA holders. Few dealer that specialize in this area. They did well this year! image

    About 95% of my yearly purchases come from my local B&M and friend/dealer who attends nearly all major coin shows. E-bay probably accounts for the other 5%.

    100% coin shows, from less than a dozen different dealers.

    Mostly modern bullion, 90% gold.

    Got a lot of common AU-BU silver dollars at a little over melt.
    The Golden Rule: Those with the gold make the rules.

    There is some overlap in the answers you know... I purchased from the Internet, but I access the B/S/T and communcate with other collectors over the Internet. Many specialist and national dealers who go to shows also have web sites. So I voted Internet. image

    Yes, there is overlap. Though I wanted to offer enough ideas that people would feel comfortable voting in one catagory or another, without their feeling I neglected something.

    With the exception of the 2007 mint set, all my coin purchases were with a local dealer.

    These initial results have very few differences compared with a similar poll I did last year at this time...

    Poll: During '06 which source caputred the largest part of your wallet?


    Noteable differences are that the mint as a primary source went down considerably, from 24.44%in 2006 to 10.56%in '07.
    I imagine that this result has more to do with the broad popularity of the 20th anniversary sets than anything else.

    I also included a couple other categories which reduced the 'Other' option from 11% to 1.4%.

    These percentage differences were made up with a category I included late last year--specialist dealers 14.08% and an increase in internet sales.

    The rest of the categories essentially stayed the same, with large auction houses and local B & Ms gaining marginally.

    My buying was equally spread among a number of the choices. eBay, small shows and large shows split it fairly evenly. That said, I had a slow year for acquisition as I currently own one too many houses. Hopefully, that will be changing soon and the coin money tap will be back on.

    I made a lot of headway on my gold dollar and Dahlonega Mint collections so the large auction companies got a lot of my money this year.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    I heard a rumor the mint was going to release a gold CBH next year . It will probably the key to the series

    I spent 40%+ on reference materials and auction cats.
    Here again not in my collecting area but excellent sources
    of info.

    A gold CBH? What is the release date and where is the show
    for release; I need to make my plansimage!!! after that a gold
    1943 steel cent would really look in my Dansco 70-70 image.

    Mostly 3 or 4 purchases from specialist dealers. Ebay has largely dried up for me, and Heritage is too risky after a few bad experiences with shaky photographs. Without being able to see coins in person first, a return privilege is key.

    This seems obvious I'm sure, but I used to assume I could "grade from photos". I've changed that to "I can grade from some people's photos". They get my money these days. I hate returning things.
