I think I will wait and pick up a set at bullion price.

So the die makers and press operators and all the other folks there work for free? The mint can turn bullion metal into coins with no additional cost or work??
$ 1450 for one oz of Platinum
$ 250 premium for reverse proof
____________________
$ 1700 Value
$ 300 risk money
If we weigh the possible benefit vs risk, we must consider the following:
Possibility of PR 70 Reverse proof........would be worth $1700 to 2500 (30%-40% chance)
Possibility of PR 70 proof FS................. would be worth $ 900 to 1200 (30%-40% chance)
Possibility of Platinum increasing ......... Would raise value of PR & Rev PR in 69 grade to
Platinum to 1600 oz to 1850 (including Rev Pr Premium)
Thus: a $300 possible loss vs a possible 1850 profit.
This purchase seems to have potential.
I would anticipate the sale of 12,000 - 15,000 sets.
If I am wrong........well,.......what do you expect from a bear.

Now I feel silly for planning to flip mine, unsealed, to my local coin dealer.
I bet these do as well as the 06 Buffalo Proofs -- stratospheric limit, but with 80% sold.
(Okay, maybe not 80%, but still more far more sold units than the actual number of Plat collectors.)
Edit: back off from crazy talk

The crap shoot here is getting a PCGS 70 Reverse grade ..Is PCGS having a 1st strike time window for the Plat set ?
When recession hits, Pt will go down anyway. If I change my mind and want one, I'll get it cheap.
(Just think of city streets clogged with a hundred thousand horses each generating 15 lbs of manure every day...)
I'm in for 2 sets.....I find it very amusing that the 10 th Anniv Plat set is being dissected for the cost vs melt ..funny when the 2006 Gold Anniv 3pc set doubled from the Mint cost at the start , I didn't see sellers , posters cut up the cost vs melt thing the same way .
Yes, but again, the 20th anniversary gold set had a mintage of 10,000, and a much broader collector base.

Looking for PCGS AU58 Washington's, 32-63.

You'll be waiting the rest of your life. These coins will never sell at bullion unless we are talking damaged and uncollectable. Anyone want to buy one and flip it to me then just PM me. A quick way to make a buck even if you hate the coin.
remember that RISK FREE 30 day return policy.....
is to counter opinion both pro and con with some kind
of mathematical equation to evaluate the odds of a
profitable purchase. The numbers are just what
seems to be reasonable in view of past performances.
I do not see much of a potential loss on this set, no matter
how they grade out.

I'm in for the one set they will allow me.
What is the market for these sets right now?
<< <i>Is there a link to these at the mint yet?........thanks >>

I'm a collector and I've bought Canadian gold proof coins at bullion prices - from dealers. Flip this one while the premium lasts!

I haven't seen any pre-sales but with a 30,000 maximum mintage and and one-per-household limit they should be on sale for a while so I don't think the sealed boxes will command much of a premium until it gets close to the First Strike® deadline.

<< <i>the market is small right now. Modern offered 2150 the first day and then yesterday changed it to 2100. I agree with BUFF and that only when about 5000 sets are released in the first 30 days then the boxes will demand a premium of about 2500 a sealed box. >>
With a 30 day return policy, I would rather take my chances as well. I think the key will be ordering when they become available to guarantee one of the first shipments. That will give you plenty of options later.
with a 30,000 limit, can they sell these into 2008 if not sold out in 2007 ?

I think they would have to Mint them all in 2007 to be able to sell them after the end of the year. I think they will sell about 15,000- 20,000 the first week.

Why so?? The 2008 ASE's have been minted for a month or two now. I'd bet that some are even milkspotted already.

Those are the bullion coins and delivery won't start until January 3rd. I believe the Mint is not able to strike coins from the previous year.

So they can strike ahead but not behind? Would it really bother anyone here if the Mint would strike a couple thousand extra 2007 dated coins in 2008?

Give me a break, maybe they won't sell at bullion price at retail venues, but I am sure lots of these sets will sell for back of melt at local coin shops, and pawn shops, when people are desperate for immediate money. Yes, these sellers are "dumb" money.

It certainly doesnt cost them $250 per coin to manufacture.

True, but then again how many businesses do you know of that sell at cost? Does PCGS grade coins at cost? Does Ford sell vehicles at cost? Isn't the mint allowed to markup for some profit? How are you in a position to know or say what is a fair markup? If the mint has make several purchases of platinum to fill orders they may end up buying some at higher prices and they will likely just absorb the increased cost.
