Yes. Luckily. Best friends for 24 yrs. Just bought a couple days ago together an old time collection of about 100-150 lbs of coins/currency. It includes perhaps 1300-1400 oz of silver. We'll be visiting at each other's house over then next who knows how long until we get it split up between us. A ton of coins to search. Hopefully we'll make a little bit of money off it, besides having a ball splitting it.
We didn't meet as coin nerds. We were both collectors in youth, met thru other interests as adults. The collector side in each of us got us both back into the spirit over the years. It's not a full time thing for us, strictely a hobby.
I hang out with musicians, contractors and executives. I'm almost embarassed to talk about coins in real life. They mostly use plastic, 30 day billing cycles and pawn shops.
One of my good friends at work has mostly gotten out of the collecting game but he thoroughly enjoys talking coins and looking at my new purchases. If I'm looking for advice on a certain coin he also has a pretty good eye and gives sound advice.
I have met many collector thru the boards - in person, and of those I have met- I would consider a friend- hell I'd invite them over to have dinner with my wife n I, but unfortunately a few live to far away- so we chat here, or on the phone.
I've got two good friends who "dabble" in the coins as they are mostly bullion people. But they will at least listen to me talk about coins and because they are friends.... act interested...
Yes. I belong to three coin clubs and several members are good friends.

The only person who takes an interest in my coins is my wife. She does it for two reasons - one is she sees better than I do so keeps me away from questionable coins. The other is that the more I spend on coins, the more she can spend shopping without me being able to say anything. No one else understands how I can spend more than a quarter on a quarter.

I go to the coin shop with one friend of mine, a nuclear physicist. Why he hangs out with me, I have no idea, but he was buyin' up gold all last year-- two ounces a month for all of 2006.

No. I've always found things to do alone...like play the piano. I used to play chess alone as well by putting up a mirror and playing both sides...I win that way!

Not really. I have a few family members with a passing interest in it, though.
About the closest I come is with a playwright who is involved in an annual stagewriting workshop that I bring students to. He is a pretty avid collector, both US and world, and we somehow got going on the topic the first year we worked together. I don't even remember how, as I stay pretty quiet about collecting, and so does he. In any case, each year since we've each brought something interesting for the other as a trade. It's been fun.
I have two friends that are coin fanatics also, but one is foreign only so we rarely talk coins. Whenever I get a good score off the bay, I call my friend who is into US coins to celebrate over the phone with. We usually talk about an hour or two a week about coins that we've either bought, sold or seen that we wish we could buy since we last talked.

You wouldn't believe how long it took to get him to sit still for this.
Forgot to mention my wife. Although she isnt a collector she is very supportive of whatever I buy and likes looking at the "pretty things that make me happy" lol

One of the greatest advantages of being a specialist in a particular coin series is membership in numismatic organizations which cater to that specialty. The camaraderie of like-minded collectors provides a whole new dimension to collecting, allows you to share thoughts and ideas with people who really understand your series, and provides a channel for sale and trade of duplicates. Some of the finest people I have had the privilege to meet have been through this hobby, and many of them have become very good friends. Despite what a couple have said on this thread, there are a few forum members here whom I would consider to be very good friends. Of course, it presents a whole new dynamic when two such good friends walk onto the same bourse floor, each looking for the very same coins. Then the gloves come off and it is every man for himself, until after the show, when you can both sit down and appreciate each other's cherrypicks. So I would say YES, I do have some very good friends in this hobby, friends that I actually do 'hang out' with.

I tried joining a local coin club. I attended one meeting and all they did was argue and talk forever about non-issues. I never went back.
I guess this is my virtual coin club.
