<< <i>He really started buying coins when he retired from the railroad. When was that?
I may be wrong. If so, then I'll defer to your Dad on that one. But I had a conversation with Grampy when we sat down with the coins when I was about 9 or 10. that was a long time ago, but like the tee cups Grammy had, Grampy wanted ac omplete set to go to us.
Those Yorks are all nice. The shield draws attention to any surface imperfections on the obverse, and the reverse design hides them. 66 on the first two, 65 on the third.
Ok, time to ask. Mark, Jim, Bob and all of the other family members in hiding (you know you can come out now, don't you? It's safe out here.), how many of you have had a thought or two about keeping these coins and continuing Grampy's collection?
Has some of the input and talk on this forum made you think once or twice about keeping the collection? Anybody feeling "the collecting bug"?
As to the Yorks, they appear to be particularly clean with nice eye appeal, I am going to go out on a limb and say the first two have a solid shot at 67, and the third is a 65/66
One thing to remember with a collection like this: most of these are high end coins, and they will appreciate over time. Get them encapsulated and hold them, and not only are you keeping a tradition in the family, but these should outpace the general market as quality original coins are hard to find today, and will be harder to find in another decade... Just don't dip them (except in acetone for the one with PVC) The world is full of lifeless dipped coins, don't EVER let anyone convince you to make these 'nice and shiny' and dip them. Believe me, many would try to convince you they will grade better that way. Part of what makes these coins so phenominal is their originality. A quick dip will, in my opinion, destroy that originality for all time.
<< <i>how many of you have had a thought or two about keeping these coins and continuing Grampy's collection?

Not going to lie... yes.... >>
Any others? You can speak through Mark or Jim. Well, not REALLY through them. That might be kind of weird. Just saying you don't need to open an account just to answer the question.
When you get a chance, please take and post more pics of the individual proof coins, including those which exhibit a Cameo appearance ("Cameo" has been discussed in prior replies to the first thread posted in January) and the 1936 and 1937 Buffalo nickels and the Walking Liberty halves (love the proof buffalos and the proof Walkers). Thanks, SanctionII.
Nice! Those commems just keep coming. Well we must be at the end if we got past Wisconsin (nice ones! I guess they are gem (65)) and made it to the Yorks. I'm in a generous mood with those Yorks and give them 67, 67, 66.
Sell vs. keep is a hard decision. There is a lot of value in that collection. If the dough would make a meaningful difference in any of the grandkid's lives a sale must be strongly considered. On the other hand there was obviously a lot of love that went into chosing those commems...
Jim – I’m sure lots of facts will come to light when we all get together…
Tbar/messydesk/Tonedbuff – thanks for the grades! Noted!
Fastrudy – please re-read my thread rules. lol…
Barndog – I think all the grand kids got a few tea-cups. (Jim – how many do you have?) We have several. I could certainly take some pictures, but I’m thinking if I do that I should post those on another forum. You know what happens when these coin guys get angry…
Tonedbuff (backed by originalisbest) – again, thanks for the great (and very helpful) comments.
tmott99 – I have heard back from everyone, and all are still in agreement. My previous short answer probably made it sound like there was dissension in the ranks. Not true. However – I’m thinking “first choice” options may be more common that previously thought. To be sure – all of us will at least have some type of small “collection.” Others may opt for more.
SanctionII – those will be coming…
Carl – Thanks for the grades! And about the commems. Well – it’s the end of the “green book”, but there are more…
OK – here’s an example of one of the black coin boards. Also – an example of how the plastic “windows” have yellowed which means you’re not seeing the coin’s true color.
<< <i> Sell vs. keep is a hard decision. There is a lot of value in that collection. If the dough would make a meaningful difference in any of the grandkid's lives a sale must be strongly considered. On the other hand there was obviously a lot of love that went into chosing those commems.. >>
I agree with what Carl said here. If it were me, I would have to think long and hard before I would even consider selling. Each coin would be precious, when I looked at it, I would try to wonder what Gramp was thinking about when he pick it, what did he see in it, what was going on in his life at that time and what enjoyment that coin gave him.
Just from the posts and comments some of the “cousins” have made in this thread, it is obvious that some of the enjoyment has been passed down to another generation. I don’t think from what I’ve read, it is about the money but it is about the history.
The pic of the black "coin board" containing more commems, SLQs and seated liberty coinage just makes this thread even better and better.
Wish I had been the person to come into possession of the coins, just so I could be the first one (and only one since I would not want anyone else to have the fun) since Gramps (decades ago) to sit down with them and go through them with a fine tooth comb. The fun of seeing "what's next" and going "Holy Crp" would be the most fun I have ever had with coins. After I was through going through the coins, I would then let others join in the fun.
Oh well, at least I can get smoe vicarious thrills by reading and posting to the two threads.
I will now patiently await the next round of pics and replies.
Wow, those coin boards are just wayyyyy to cool! Look at those great seated coins! I vote for close ups of each of the seated coins! You may be surprised at the value you have stored up on that board! Depending on dates and conditions (and some look pretty good) those coins could individually be very valuable. Close ups, please! Are there many coin boards like that? I'm with Sanction... those types of finds make this collection more real, and more cool! The BTW is a bit beat up... maybe a 63 and a really common coin. I like the looks of those Columbian Expo halves, they look to have toned nicely (which they often do).
Actually, that BTW is probably an easy 64, and could conceivably grade MS65. A little stubble on the jawline is pretty much inevitable in this coin up to MS66, and that coin is otherwise impressively clean, with the nice skin like practically every other coin posted here. The 46(P) is 5 or 10 times more common than the pictured 46(D) -- a lot of people might be surprised when they try to go and buy a 46-D BTW like that one. Not saying it's unique, but it isn't as common as you might think either.
I guess I'll have to learn how to post pics to the Forum. Would it be over-stepping the Forum bounds to do that? It will be this weekend before I could show a couple of my personal favorites.
tmot99 I've thought about keeping the collection too. The second mortgage ...LOL
Mark, that's a great pic of the Carlsbad Cortez sign. How old is it? 45 years? Lot's of family times there.
I saw an 1877 Seated Liberty in the Black board holder. Could I have that one too??? J.K. (but maybe not) Apperently, Tonedbuff liked them too!!!
TAClough Just from the posts and comments some of the “cousins” have made in this thread, it is obvious that some of the enjoyment has been passed down to another generation. I don’t think from what I’ve read, it is about the money but it is about the history.
You hit the nail on the head. All the cousins are comfortable, and there's more love in these coins than you could ever imagine. Grampy spent years collecting these - obviously. I distinctly remember how excited he got each year when a new roll of coins or $2 bill was available at Carlsbad National. It was a major event one summer - just he & I. (A very precious memory) Wish I still had that $2 bill he got me that time.
Thanks for everyone's thoughts. You honor us with them.
65 on the BTW? Hmmmm... its not just the chatter, but there is what looks like a gouge to me on the face. If that is a ding, no way it can go 65, and 64 would be a stretch. The face is the central point of that coin. If that is not a gouge, and it is just the chatter, I'd need to see it in hand to believe a 65.
My grandmother had a collection of tea cups too. I have no idea if they had value. I guess pictures of those could be put in the "general collectibles forum" and a link to that thread be put in here. There won't be many people interested, but it would be nice for some.
that "black board of coins" is an awesome treasure. Is there a story of why Gramps put those particular ones in there? Maybe he knew about the great "toning ability" of such a holder and one day some of those would be awesome pieces with awesome toning.
I think I use awesome too much, but with a collection like that, it's the only appropriate word.
I agree with the others that it would be difficult selling such a prized collection. It would be tough, but I understand about splitting it fairly b/w all the Family.
Take care and.........more pics, more pics, more pics!!!

TAClough – yes, and well said cousin Jim! We have sent numerous emails talking about the best way to honor our grandparents, and it’s clear to me that any monetary benefit we may receive as a result of this inheritance, is far down on everyone’s list of priorities
SanctionII – I know I’m sounding like a broken record, but all of us (family) are thrilled - for our grandparents - that these coins are being viewed, enjoyed, and appreciated by so many.
Tonedbuff – I did take a bunch of close-ups of the other-than-commemorative coins. But somehow – I deleted most of them?? Rats! Jim – well... I guess I can’t turn-down any request from Barndog. Here are a couple quick shots of a few tea cups. (Following my own rules – I also have to post a coin picture(s) also.) And I snapped the Cortez pic just a few weeks ago. I knew you’d like it!

I own two MS66 Gettysburgs. One, a mostly brilliant coin with nice rim toning in a PCGS holder, and two, a nice toned piece in an NGC holder. Your #1 piece is superior in lack of contact marks to my brilliant coin in the PCGS holder! Good luck with the future of this wonderful collection, and wishing some of us classic commemorative collectors might have a shot to own some of your Grandfathers coins in the near future.
Thanks SilverEagle - scrolling though hundreds of pictures, and that one sorta jumped-out at me.
Hoodlatch – I assume your avitar pic is one of your 66s. Looks nice! We’re starting to talk about getting some coins graded, so maybe we’ll know pretty soon if ours can compare to your gems! Thanks!
Oh – and BTW…
Not that I’m counting or anything… but if you take the first thread (562 posts), add the 100 from the, “Why is that "Recently Acquired Collection" thread locked?”, then add this one (338), I’m going on record to say the post-count total is:
I wish the Avitar was MY coin. No, my NGC coin is toned quite simular but it's not near the level of that coin. I'd say the Avitar Coin once belonged to Anaconda Rare Coins. His coins are simply stunning!
I made my first coin purchase mistake... I've been buying up Ikes on e-Bay, trying to quench a thirst, and like someone here on the Forum said, "Be careful of those 'Power Sellers.' I have to laugh because I spent under $5.00 for a '71 S brown box proof. It appears that the casing was pried open and the coin replaced with a '71 business Ike. It certainly wasn't a mint state coin as the seller proclaimed.
At any rate, I've sent it back. Let's see what comes of the ordeal. He'll probably accuse me of I switching it - HA!!!
I have clearly gotten an emerging collector bug.
Sorry I haven't had time to post any pics of tea cups or otherwise.
I think it is very cool that you are starting up a bit of your own collection Cousin2! Some nice coins to round out whatever you hold onto from your granddads collection! Hey, if the worse that happens while you are learning is you get ripped on a $5 coin, you are doing well. Most of us managed to make mistakes many times more costly while learning!
Thanks Jim! And hey - if you're starting a collection, I've got a few coins I can sell you. (jk!)
OK - well. I've been trying to prepare more pictures - some from several requests - and should get those out in the next few days. Timing seems appropriate – as it appears this thread has jumped the shark… lol...
I found this message board by accident while looking for nice pic of an Alabama Centennial Commem - and I got way more than I bargained for (and I wasted a couple of hours of my workday).
Darth - what an amazing collection. I didnt have time to read all of the posts, I just randomly read some of the story and scrolled through looking at the photos (when I have time I want to take a close look at the whole thread). I apologize if this was brought up already and/or if there is a reason you may not want to post this - but for some reason I'd love to see a photo of your grandfather. I think it would be a nice touch to commemorate him along with his collection. To me, the story behind the collection is sometimes even nicer than the collection. My father came to this country in the late 50's and saved what coins he could that he found interesting (he didnt have a lot of money, so most of what he saved were indian head pennies and buffalo nickels that he found in change). Then in the 60's, he started saving what silver he could (mostly dimes and quarters). There is nothing particularly valuable in what he saved, but it is so special to me because it was a labor of love on his part and I will always keep it separate from my collection with the hope of passing it down to my son.
Thanks for posting, and keep them coming. I'm hooked!
Welcome, halfhunter2! Some of us have accidentally met our future spouses too. Accidents work out great sometimes. Hope you enjoy this neck of the woods.
Thanks for posting, and keep them coming. I'm hooked! >>
Halfhunter2 – Thanks for all the nice comments. Like you, I stumbled upon this forum a couple months ago – and what a great resource it’s been. (Sorry about wasting several hours of your workday. If you want to read the first thread, please do so at home! )
Nice story about your father and son. You’ll find that many here have the same passion you describe about keeping coins/collections in the family.
Certainly no apology necessary! I don’t think it’s been mentioned, but I have thought about posting a picture of my grandparents. Ironically – I’m not sure how many (or decent) pictures I have. Now I’m going to have to go home and see – thanks!
Speaking of, “keeping the pictures coming.” I don’t think there’s much more people can add to this thread - it’s all been said! - (which is a huge compliment to everyone here.) I think it’s come to the end of its useful “life-cycle.” So that got me thinking… I didn’t want the thread to just fizzle-out and die. So my plan is to end it with a bang! A “picture barrage” of sorts – for three reasons: - Give the family (cousins/siblings/parents) a chance to see these pictures since we’re all in different cities/states. - As a “thank-you” to everyone here for posting a wealth of information! We are so far ahead of where we would have been without this forum. Also - this thread really pushed me to get all this work (pictures/cataloging) done. That would not have happened without you guys hounding me for pictures! - Lastly, and most importantly – in honor of our grandparents.
So Halfhunter – you caught me a few days early. I’m currently in the middle of editing, uploading, and arranging pictures and hyper-links. It’s looking like 200+ NEVER BEFORE SEEN and sometimes SHOCKING photographs! Lol Hoping to post at the end of this weekend or very early next week. Thanks! Mark
I know everyone will enjoy what Mark is putting together - especially me!!! He has our Grandparents in mind, but the pics will certainly be a "Hat's Off" thank-you to you guys/gals here on the forum.
After this thread ends, you all can anticipate some more pics of these coins as they return from PCGS for grading. Grading being the next phase of cataloguing our great legacy.

Thanks for posting, and keep them coming. I'm hooked!

Halfhunter2 – Thanks for all the nice comments. Like you, I stumbled upon this forum a couple months ago – and what a great resource it’s been. (Sorry about wasting several hours of your workday.
A “picture barrage” of sorts – for three reasons:
- Give the family (cousins/siblings/parents) a chance to see these pictures since we’re all in different cities/states.
Lol
Hoping to post at the end of this weekend or very early next week. Thanks!
Mark
This is gonna be one heck of an ending!!!!
Thanks for the ride Darth!!!!!!!!!!!
good luck with everything...........wes
Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.
I have been enjoying your collection and thoughts from your family and find that it is extraordinarily FANTASTIC!!!! Keep'em coming!!!!
Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.
