THE OFFICIAL: How much money have you GIVEN 80sJunkie THREAD

I was only involved on the first 80s rip. I believe that was around 76 dollars.
Edited to say I paid via paypal, received it via the USPS. I still have the box with his name and PO Box attached.
Edited again to say that I do have about half of the packs which I did not touch...if the authorities want PSA to exam them to show they were resealed....we do have that option I guess.

this could be an interesting thread to see just how big the scope of this fiasco really is. i would like to see how much each member was taken for. i didnt partake in the rips so i am at zero.
Guys, please only post here:
1.) Which rips you were involved in run by Gary.
2.) How much $ you sent him.
3.) How you paid him.
This is an attempt to collect vital information.
Please keep all other comments in the numerous other threads available on this topic.
Thanks, Bob C.

Nothing against new members or low count posters. At one point, we all started at 0. Just seems kind of overly trust-worthy when they haven't been an active member.
Nothing personal and I apologize in advance if you take this the wrong way.
I did not participate.
I will say - if somehow this can be handed off to one jurisdiction - and they bring him in for questions.
And if there's fingerprints on the INSIDE of a wrapper - and match his? Well ya got him!
I wish you guys luck - IMO - this guy has done way more than derive a surreptitious profit.

Several new folks have commented in other threads that
they participated in the rips because "high-post count"
members were in the mix.
Stown, I think for most people (myself included), they read the posts here for a while before they actually decide to join and make posts. So while their joined date is recent and their post count may be low I think a lot of people have been reading the boards for a while.
Also, I think there's a great deal of unwarranted trust given to members with high post counts. That clearly was the case with 80sJunkie. People, for the most part, are good-natured and want to believe/trust. I think that we as board have learned an extremely valuable lesson through all this that transcends just future group rips and will hopefully save a lot of people on this board some serious coin in the future, be it rips or just general card trades/purchases.

Just seems odd that posters who do not participate in community discussions would fork over hundreds of dollars to participate in a community break.
Maybe it's just me....

I see your point. Maybe they're just intimidated by the thoughtful, well formed, cohesive and overall excellent quality of posters like myself. I know I would be intimidated by me if I wasn't me.

No worries about us taking your comments the wrong way. My situation was just simply that I was starting at 0. I lurked on these boards for a number of months prior to joining. I have a friend who mentioned the late 70's early 80's rip so I finally broke down and decided to set up an account so I could participate. It sounded like fun and since all the packs were supposed to come from BBCE, I wasn't too concerned. I guess I was just a little too naive...
It probably wouldn't stop me the next time, though. If everything is split up by Steve Hart and shipped out, I'm in like Flynn...

That is a great idea, Mike.
Just a thought here, but do any of you think that Topps would be interested in catching this pack factory? After all, he is repackaging their product illegally and selling it as if it was an original package that they produced.
I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I thought I'd make the suggestion.
see why the new folks would be sucked-in, too.
A good con relies on convincing folks who already have
credibility within a group. Once those folks are in, they
do most of the selling for the con by their mere presence.

low post counts don't necessarrily equate to low following of the board/ hobby nor does it indicate anything about one's discretionary income
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////
That is absolutely correct.
I think the original question was more about
how/why someone would be likely to jump in.
There may have been "a shill inquiry" component
to the question, as well. I thought about that
early on, but dismissed it; that element was not
necessary to make the con work.

Well yes if 80's stood to make some cake, get rid of old invetory, replace invetory with bbcx material, etc and was 2 or 3 (alias) short of having every1 paid...
<< <i>low post counts don't necessarrily equate to low following of the board/ hobby nor does it indicate anything about one's discretionary income >>
I never doubted that, hence my numerous disclaimers.
I'm not bashing nor accusing you of anything. I'm asking if you would please explain your rational for doing the rips, being a "long time listener, first time caller" kind of poster
I appreciate your insight in advance.
In one of the rips, I recall that somebody questioned
the "wise nature" of sending the money to the original
organizer.
Was Gary the poster who initially steered the group away
from the original organizer on the issue of safe-payments?
That question may have already been answered, but I
cannot find it.
and the current basketball rip which gary said he would refund me after i sent the packs back.
keep ya posted.
Well, I was in the '75T mini--no problems.
I was in the Hockey rip--no problems.
I did the 70/80 BB rip--because the first 2 rips that I was in went off w/o a hitch and I was hoping for some good PSA 10s.
Why is my post count low?
Because I don't feel like I have to add my 2c into every topic to pad my numbers. I like to keep my posts on the topic and if I can add value to the topic, than I post.
I was reading these boards for a while before I joined. Because, I've been on the fence for a long time on grading cards. Being a collector for over 30 years, I never felt it was necessary. However, since I wanted to start selling some of my BB cards it seemed necessary to get them graded to get a decent price.
AJ
I understand that you aren't bashing anyone and absolutely not accusing any of us low posters, but rather trying to gain insight on why us newbies would go in on it. Here's mine:
My collecting focus has recently gravitated towards collecting unopened packs. I have some vintage boxes, but don't really get a ton of joy out of them. So they just sit in the closet, swaddled in bubblewrap and an outer cardboard box. At least I can take a look at my single packs from time to time , whether it be a 86-87 fleer basketball pack or a super common, costs more to ship it than it's worth pack.
At the time, it seemed 80's Junkie had some decent credibility on here, and most of those packs were things no one would tamper with anyway. And these rips were an ideal way to get a pack from each year, especially when I am just starting on this endevor and also from a source( this forum) that I trust much more than the internet auction sites. 80 bucks for a complete run of 80's baseball was an absolute bargain (if they were what I thought I was paying for) and so was the $155 for the football packs which were supposed to be coming from one of the number one dealers in all of mankind's history-Steve Hart. Plus, if I ever wanted to or needed to sell them, I knew that I could do so knowing that they were legit and I wasn't decieving anyone, intentionally or not. When I saw the first post about "stop the vintage rips" my heart sank. My hobby is one of my escapes, and now even my escape is somewhat tainted since my "unopened" packs for the most part have a bunch of crap in them. Now I really don't even want to look at them, and that is the last thing I wanted.
I have some money to blow on the hobby, but not to spend on things that make me feel that way. I also love to read the forum, reading almost every post just for entertainment value. And of course I learn things too.
I'm not even sure when I joined, but the 10/06 baseball rip was the first rip going since I did join, and I felt like a little kid at christmas when I got my box of all the packs. Same with the football one. I hope that we are able to organize these in the future, and I will definately participate. I missed the basketball on, it filled up too soon!
I'll chime in every once in a while, but won't ever be too concerned about my posts count. When I do, I try to add something to the discussion, and not just post a smiley face or a semi-funny off-topic one liner. I know this topic is supposed to be about the total $$ we have passed through 80's junkies hands, so even this post seems like it strays from the intention.
And there are the inner workings of my hampster in a spinning wheel-fueled brain!

I would have liked to participate in some of the breaks but felt I was too new for some of them and too poor for the others. I would have taken some of the 78's, but I went on vacation the week that was put together. I do have a couple of questions though for those of you that did participate.
Did Gary send these all out using USPS or did he use others Fex/ex UPS as well? Also if you purchased a full box in the 75's did Steve send that directly or did that pass through Gary's hands as well. I would assume the rips like 80's Gary is the one who collated the runs for everyone?
