Four hundred and forty five dollars?! For a 50 cent card. Not sure what else needs to be said.

  • So theres more ??!! Maybe I should stop selling my extras !

Feb. 27, 2007— No. 40 in the newly released Topps 2007 baseball card set is making a presidential splash.

The card features New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, but a waving President Bush — a well-known baseball man — can be spotted in a Yankee Stadium box seat as Jeter takes a cut.

And there, in the Yankee dugout, is late slugger Mickey Mantle, licking his chops for one more at bat.

The digitally superimposed commander in chief and legendary Bronx bomber are two high-profile touches that Topps spokesman Clay Luraschi admits were done on purpose and in jest.

And, Luraschi told ABC News, collectors should study some of the set's other cards with a sharp eye.

"I'm just encouraging people to to look closely," Luraschi said.

Is Vice President Dick Cheney hidden behind Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez? Maybe Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice appears on Red Sox batsman Manny Ramirez' card?

"I want you to find them," Luraschi challenged, noting that the instant buzz generated by the Jeter card, if not intended, is certainly welcome.

"It's not a bad thing at all," he said. "It's going to bring baseball cards to the attention of people who might not collect."

A White House spokesman was unavailable for a comment on the Jeter card.

The New York Yankees had no comment, while the shortstop yesterday told the New York Daily News he hadn't seen it yet.

Reports from the Red Sox spring training clubhouse, recounted by Luraschi, were that the Yankees' rivals were fighting like children over the Jeter card yesterday when they noticed the presidential and Hall of Famer cameos.

The spoof card was thought up in the Topps creative department and during the final proofing of the set, the first half of which was released to stores late last week, company managers decided to go ahead with the design.

"No one's losing a job," Luraschi said. "We encourage our creative department to be as creative as possible. They had a sense of humor to do something like this. We thought it was funny. "

While acknowledging that some may try to read into the card, he chalked up the digital image simply to a random sense of humor.

Sounds like the whole set is a novelty set. Reminds me of those Fun Cards or or whatever they were called from Collector's Choice back in 94-95.

I pulled the card from the second pack of Topps I opened and immediately posted it online. Since htere were some 3,000 listings for "2007 Topps Jeter" I wanted to make sure I got something so I put a BIN of $32 thinking the price would drop even more after 24 hours. The card sold within the hour. Counting old and current auctions I had well over 7,000 auctions with "2007 topps jeter" in the title. It's amazing that people are still paying these prices.

After seeing the article above I guess I need to go and take a closer look at the others.

This is one of those times where I would like to be the fly on the wall...

When the person who paid 400$ realizes JUST how rare this card really is.

Are people even looking at what they're bidding on? I'm seeing auctions closing for a single pack of '07 Topps for over $20 a pack!

If anybody has a set, please look through the crowd scenes
and post info here; so we know what we are looking for.

I looked through a couple hundred cards, and found nothing
    unusual.

Team cards might be worth checking, too.

I thought, at first, Penny Marshall was sitting behind Joe Torre,
    but its not her.

  • I have the whole set now and looked thru the hundred or so that I have here at work-Twins,Yankees,Phillies,Cardinals and nothing. I'll go thru them all tonite and tomorrow. Alot are blurred but Giambis background is clear. I'll post pics or a list of possibles as Im not familiar with famous faces. Unless its Flavor Flav or Hulk Hogan. They kinda stick out.

Maybe I'll just post the whole lot on ebay as - 2007 Topps Wheres Waldo Lot U find it.

I don't have many singles, but took a closer look at them. The problem with this is that when you don't know what you're looking for you start trying to convince yourself that something might be there.

However, I noticed on two of my team set cards that there is one player that looks to be wearing sunglasses. Different teams could've had different rules, but I find it hard to believe a team would knowingly allow a player to wear sunglasses in the team photo. Then again, it's probably nothing.

  • Errors in 2007 Topps

Theres 5+ Generation Inserts missing names on front (probally printing errors)

The Halladay #180 and Nathan #179 cards both have Nathans "blurb" on back bottom.

Red Sox Logos on back have differents sizes (2 for sure possibly a 3rd) But player X's logos are all same size so unsure if anything at this point.

Not a error and I'll post the pic weekend or Monday but as I was going thru the cards real fast to divide in team lots a card caught my eye that made my heart sink for a moment.(name escapes me) but in background is a huge Red Ad with white letters saying DISK. Well his body covers most of the bottom portion of the S and I thought it was a c. Oh well.

.....off to go look for more this weekend. image

You all should check out the prices this card is going for on Ebay. Pretty funny. I have to admit though that I want one.
  • ripkenintheminorsripkenintheminors Posts: 2,186 ✭✭✭
Amazing watching the prices fluctuate back and forth. Earlier I was watching people bid over $125 DESPITE the fact that they could've bought the card with a BIN of $75. Amazing.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
I was just told by someone in authority at Topps that a card has Moe larry and Shemp on it. They decided not to use Curly. He also would not tell me which vard too. He hinted it was a Red Sox Player though.

I agree that card is still going strong. Not as strong as the other day but still................

    Good for you.
  • Hi,
I just got back from Dave and Adam's retail store. They were all out of the 2007 Topps series 1 Rack boxes, Jumbo Boxes, & Wax Boxes. When I asked what was going on they told me that Topps had requested that send all the inventory back because of an error card. I asked if it was because of the Jeter card and they said yes it was.

Just another tidbit in the Jeter, Mantle, Bush soap opera.

  • So Topps is asking for all cards to be returned, just b/c of the Jeter card. Seems like an odd request and a logistical nightmare..for Topps, but who knows

do you have a link regarding the topps comment. i hadnt seen that yet.
  • I do not...one of the previous comments from a member stated he got this info through DAC

I bet it was just some (lame) attempt at misinformation. Topps could never get those cards back.

  • Would a recall really be needed? Unless the Pres (unlikely) or Mantle rights owners (maybe) want this. Topps dont need to. Its not offensive, they just didnt have permission. My crazy mind says maybe a rumor is circulating of a recall (happens) and they (DA) just want to sit on their cases to wade this out as it seems to hold some steam. So did the FF. lol

  • Some have "Buy It Now" for $30 or so. I this one a bogus bidder?:

$4,750 Jeter, Mantle, and Bush? Come on now!!!!

Are all "error" cards the same or was there a more limited "error" card such as a red back edition or something like that? Thanks!

  • I believe the "white" is the base card, red is a variation, and the Gold is #/2007

So the "gold" is the most valuable, but not worth the $4750!!!!

  • I believe there is also a 1/1 printer's plate. I thought I saw a post from someone on the boards showing it was auctioned off over the weekend. I thought it sold for $1,100?? Far less than less than the copper issue.
  • Theres also the platinum version avail. which is 1/1.

Heres why I didnt get any Jeters from my $50 at Target. I knew there was a pattern.

On my way home from work today I went to Target to pick up Casino Royale on DVD. On my way out, I stopped by the Trading Card section (I was just there this past Saturday) and much to my surprise ALL of the 2007 Topps cards were gone. Even the pack vending box that they had three full ones of were completely absent from the area. I was kind of shocked as I wanted to pick up a few packs and a box or two. (Poker gods were great to me last night). So I walked out empty handed.

Trying to get back home I got stuck in the wrong lane and wound up quite a ways away from where I intended to be. On my left was a Wal-Mart parking lot I planned on turning around in. Suddenly, I realized that Wal-Mart sells cards so I went in to take a look. As with ALL Wal-Marts I've ever been to, I had a helluva time finding the trading cards. As I was ready to walk out, I saw a cube display with boxes upon boxes upon boxes of cards on them. As I thought, they were ALL 2007 Topps Series 1 boxes. I picked up a 20 pack Bonus Box and a couple of regular packs as well. (One to go in my Unopened Pack collection).

I opened the first of the regular packs and got nothing. No inserts nothing special. I put the other pack away and started opening up the Bonus Box. I got a TON of different inserts in there which I was happy to get, but through 19 of the packs there was no Jeter. Finally, on the last pack a Jeter was right in the middle. So now I can rest easy as when Topps "corrects" the card for the factory sets I'll have both versions. Phew!
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

are the new (Jeter-Bush-Mantle removed) sets out, now?? or is there a way to differentiate between the returned boxes and replacements? I ask only because I have seen some series ONE boxes @ Target.

  • JdurgJdurg Posts: 997
No. The card will only be corrected in the Team Sets that are produced and the Factory Sets. Any of the Series 1 packs you see will have the chance of having the Jeter Card. I believe that they have already produced their run of cards for Series 1 and are starting production on Series 2.

How funny, i haven't bought any new stuff in such a long time. So i go over to Target this morning and some little 17 year old kid is stocking the shelf from a fresh case of Topps 2007 Series One. I figured since i won some money yesterday at Portland Meadows Race Track i would buy a box for chits and giggles. The very first pack i open and top card on the pack is none other than the Jeter Card. I guess i'm going back to the track again today!! BTW, it gets better, six cards down facing opposite direction is another one!!! Definitely going to the track now!!
