So an alledged error regular circulated card is going for $200 but a box is $40? In theory, you could buy 5 boxes and probably pull 3 or 4 of these cards?

    : scratches head :

    I don't get it.

And, it was not "all good."

The newspaper story fed the ISP home pages, which fed EBAY.

I'll bet champagne corks are popping at TOPPS tonight.

Anyone want to make a wager that card will be on eBay signed by all three notiables (with a COA from GEM) some day?

cause you missed it, its over!! Card Crashed like Doubleclick stock.....

someone should do a intraday price graph for this card....it would be a little tuff because many current high bidders put there bid in Tuesday morning, but they wont win for a couple days, when the buyers realize how foolish they have been...i wonder if many of these transactions will ever be completed....

    second biggest winner after Topps...EBAY.

No way the EBAY-rookies are going to pay. Only the experienced guys will pay.

Some buyers will destroy/lose/damage their packages, and file chargebacks.

Smart sellers will fully insure their USPS packages and let the PO deal with
    the fraudulent claims.

many of those 'endings' were relisted as BIN's.

Guys must have been afriad to run a full 7 day auction with a 99 start. or whatever and opted for the BIN.

  • I don't know if anyone has thought of this but I heard it on XM this morning. Is it true that you aren't supposed to be able to profit from the Presidents image except for charity? If that's true then Topps could have an issue. I just got a look at this card and it's not really that impressive. Especially if it's not an error. Is it me or is anyone else getting tired of manufactured error cards?

Still going strong in overnight and early morning sales, with most ranging anywhere from $40 - $100. This is getting crazier and crazier.

Watch for a second wave of insanity on prices if Topps issues a version w/o Mantle and Bush in the picture....

good point, Topps may have a problem on their hands....seems like a pretty sneaky thing they pulled this year....But after the Gordon "error" (done 100% on purpose), topps had to come up with something else this year to top that....i guess we can look foward to a Topps Stunt every February now....

This one is over 400.00 with an hr. to go.

    Steve

In yesterdays daily news it stated that they (Topps) needed White House approval and did not get it. Maybe that is why the run up was as intense as it is.

    Good for you.
  • but the newly placed auction at BIN are $49.99, and they have been unsold for 8 hrs now......

would the $400 bidder cancel his bis and then just BIN for $49.99..........

    are people this dumb?
  • The whole President angle take this on a potentially different course. They still seem to be going through the roof. Did see a few on Naxcom for $36.00

I couldn't help myself. Picked up a box last night at Walmart. I actually like the set, besides the "Rookie Card" logo that is on all the stuff now. Neat inserts. Who knows how long this will go on. I figured it would have calmed down by this morning but it doesn't look that way!

  • I guess the word still hasn't gotten out about this card, even though there's over 2,700 Jeter's on Ebay. The Jeter's nearing the end of their auction are all still in the $100+ range. Amazing!!!
If the Jumbo boxes I'm waiting on arrive in time, I'll put my Jeter's up for .99 and see what they bring in a 1 day auction.
Of course they'll probably arrive just as the feeding frenzy cools off

I thougt the same thing. Bush and then Mantle is copyrighted or licensed. Hmm.

Had to join the craziness so I went to a card shop at lunch. Hobby Boxes were $55 and he had 6. Boxes were selling for $90 and I was going to gamble but settled for a box and a $10 jumbo pack.
I bought $66 worth of packs. Pulled a Red and White one. My card wasnt listed in searches on ebay after 1/2 a hour and I knew the market would get flooded and it was 12:00 so I sold them on Naxcom for $25 and $50. So those two cards paid for the whole box. Sadly there wasnt anything special in there but I got a few Dodgers for free !! Whats funny is one of the guys I sold to on Naxcom is someone who buys alot of cards and flips them and has been around awhile. He should know whats up. Crazy

I think it's interesting that I posted about this card on
February 15 and no one seemed to care at all. It's crazy how these things develop and take on a life of their own.

Personally, I don't really care one way or the other.

Now, if it was a Barry Bonds card with Willie Mays and Al Gore, maybe then I'd buy a box or two.

Edited to say: there's a really interesting article in the economics of fads, if someone's smart enough to do the research. It'd be *really* interesting to see how the prices for this card increased and decreased. I'd guess it was a $1 for a while, slowly climbed as it gained a little traction, then took off when it hit the mainstream media. It's going to crash pretty hard (maybe already) but will always remain one of the most desirable cards from the set. (Just like the FF card, I'd say).
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
Topps has no problem with the Mantle estate they have a contract with them, that is why you see all the mantle inserts. The Bush angle though could get interesting.

The attorney's on this forum can probably answer this better but I think using these images (Bush-Mantle) constitutes "fair use" and are not subject to the same restrictions as a card which features one or two players, for example. They are in the background, just like a background shot of the crowd and the mfg. obviously photoshop'd the image.

I was just going to say the same thing... 9+ pages of these come up during a search. It seems the ones with "Mantle" and "Bush" in the title are getting more hits and more money. I just cannot understand how 9 pages of the same card, with 15 pages already closed, is getting this kind of money.

Is Olberman snatching any of these up? IIRC, he was the main buyer of the Gordon cutouts last year.

I have no problem with "shiny stuff", but this is just odd... I think it's a cool concept and when the other guy posted about this card a while back, I thought it was a cool card. Never thought I could make a small fortune off of them at the time...if only I had known... image

Topps has had the Pres on cards in the past (all those Presidental inserts)

The Desert Storm set, issued back around the first Gulf War had Pres. GHWB. in it, but I don't recall if he was still in office when the set was released.

Back in the mid 90s, Topps tried to get into comics, and had Pres. Clinton and Al Gore featured as central characters in some cheesy comics (even made some "super hero" cards for them).

Also back in the 90s, the card game "Illuminati: The New World Order" had cards for Pres Clinton, as well as Hillary. (Bill's was wearing a dog collar on his card, and Hillary's holding a leash on hers)

I doubt any legal action is going to come down the pipe, as it hasn't in the past.

    Smart idea.

The problem is that all/most of the other cards in the
packs are junk and have no value.

Even the common GU stuff is mostly worthless on EBAY.
