Not only do they lose potential customers but if an existing one saw their responses, they shouldn't buy from them on principals alone.

It is usually a mistake for sellers to offer free-stuff, when those sellers did nothing wrong. Such offers just open the door to more misunderstandings.
In the seller vs. buyer venue that EBAY has become, it is smart for sellers to move-on quickly at the first sign of a problem. Offering free-stuff only prolongs the inevitable controversy.

When the right/wrong issue surfaced, I and others stated that the seller had done nothing wrong. Through claimed excuseable neglect, the OP did not timely pay.
The seller was "wrong" to offer a freebie. Anybody who doubts that should do a forensic read of this thread and see where it began to take the fatal turn.

After MULTIPLE attempts at my free T206 (would prefer t205 the set I am wokring on) I left positive feedback and sent an email saying "ok I left positive feedback, where is my T206" No response, who cares at this point?? If I do recieve a mystery t206 in the mail, fine, I would change the thread since he DID give my MONEY back, and then a bonus since he felt he was wrong. be it after I admitted I was and even let it go!
