Glad to see Bernie making that choice. My guess is that he will end up on the Phillies.
  • I heard there were at least 3 teams interested in Bernie including Seattle, the Phillies, and Angels. He would make a great DH. Heck the Mets probably want him as a backup outfielder too. Willie loves this guy. After all, in 420 at bats last year the guy only batted .281 with 12 Homers and 61 RBI's. How terrible is that? The guy is simply washed up. I would not be suprised at all if the Red Sox were considering Bernie as a replacement when JD Drew goes down. image

In an article I read Bernie said that he only wants to play for the Yankees but I am quite sure any one of those teams mentioned would pay him substantially more than the $1.5 Million that the Yankees paid him last year. When Sheffield and Matsui went down Bernie was an absolute bargain filling in.

There is nothing more than I would like to see as a Bernie fan than Bernie going to a team such as the Angels or Seattle, and as a DH hitting .300 with 20 Homers and 90 RBI's, and beating the Yankees in the playoffs.

  • NEW YORK -- Bernie Williams is prepared to spend his spring without the New York Yankees.
According to multiple reports, the outfielder is not inclined to accept the Yankees' offer of a non-guaranteed Minor League contract, instead opting to wait for a guaranteed roster spot.

"I think if they wanted me, they probably would have signed me already," Williams told reporters Friday night. "The option to go to Spring Training and see what would happen, I don't think at this moment it is something I want to consider."

Williams, 38, addressed the media briefly at a New Milford, Conn., charity benefit concert, where he played guitar behind singer Chynna Phillips.

A five-time All-Star, Williams has played all 16 of his Major League seasons in pinstripes, but the Yankees appear ready to move on without him.

"Obviously, if we start camp and he's not with us, that's it," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said in a telephone interview.

With a first-base platoon that has shifted Jason Giambi to a full-time designated hitter, and a 12-man pitching staff expected to be utilized, New York's outfield has been constructed for only four players. Melky Cabrera is tentatively tabbed to serve as a backup.

"The way it looks right now," Williams told reporters, "it doesn't seem like I'm going to be playing with that team this year."

Williams told reporters he would remain at home and stay in shape, anticipating a call that could come from the Yankees at some point -- perhaps in the event of injury to one of the club's starting outfielders: Hideki Matsui, Johnny Damon and Bobby Abreu.

Earlier this winter, teammate Jorge Posada suggested that Williams might rejoin the Yankees at some point during the season.

Williams proved last season that he is still capable of handling Major League pitching, batting .281 with 12 home runs and 61 RBIs in 131 games.

A Yankee since 1991, Williams was an integral part of four World Series-winning clubs. He has a career batting average of .297 and is baseball's all-time leader in postseason home runs (22) and RBIs (80).

I guess not signing a minor league contract will not totally exclude Williams from the Yankees. He can still be called up.

  • I'm in the NY area, I have watched Bernie his entire career...and I am a fan...he has something left in the tank and the hell with the Yanks...he should be looking out for himself.....I hope he lands a 2 yr contract with another team and punishes the yanks when and if he plays against them....

Bottom line...the Yanks are going with youth....melky...it is pure business....that is what cashman is all about....winning and business...

Bernie Williams was always a class act, Im glad he has finally slowed down. I used to hate seeing him in a clutch situation vs the Sox. I respect that he is not jumping around trying to make another team. A true Yankee great. Good luck to him no doubt.
  • "I hope he lands a 2 yr contract with another team and punishes the yanks when and if he plays against them...."

I could not have said it any better.

I think that Bernie has an outside shot to be elected to the Hall of Fame some day. Is there any non-Yankee fan out there that agrees? I noticed that the posters on this board can be very biased but I love this board! I try to be unbiased when making such comments about election into the HOF but I am a Yankee fan. I have always thought that Jim Rice should have been voted in years ago.

Disclaimer: Bermie Williams is my favorite player.

Except, that isn't true. Bernie rejected the Yankees offer for a minor league deal. He also said he is going to pursue other teams. He didn't want to "try out for a spot", he wanted a guaranteed spot--this was taken directly from his mouth in an ESPN article 2 days ago. Thus, the posts in this thread implying Bernie just wanted a shot were completely bogus.
  • I still agree bernie is a class act and still has what it takes he should settle for no less then a gauranteed spot because he deserves it

You are probably right, in that his years of experience are deserving of a roster spot or dismissal, rather than have him "try out", as if he's a rookie. He won't get that shot with the Yankees, but he might find willing takers with a team on a budget and an opening.

Nope, what was completely bogus was YOUR way off base comments about Bernie Williams being "selfish" for wanting to take a roster spot from a kid that does not exist. Stop trying to analyze something that you don't know squat about image

Exactly, if "that" somebody had any idea about the prospects in the Yankees organization they'd know. Or if they actually knew(like Yankee fans who follow religiously) on why Bernie deserves a roster spot. I hope the very best for him, although it's going to be odd if he's in another uniform.

Does not look likely that will happen. If nothing else, Jow must have felt the need to reach out to a guy who was a big part of the reason Joe has 4 World Series rings as a manager.

I will remind you once again, I NEVER SAID ANY SUCH THING. Be a man, search this thread, realize that it was ANOTHER POSTER that said that, and then aplogize for lying, and stop continuing to lie, post after post, time and time again. Simple enough, really. God, you're so hell bent on trolling and running someone off, you'll just invent quotes that don't exist so you can fight. Unbelievable.

He's also the guy that said that there were no other teams interested in Bernie. Ignorance and stupidity are a tough combination to try and help someone understand what they know nothing about.

Wow, I have been gone and this thread went to sleep. The Yankees definately have a new look this year.
