Giveaway! Win a 1987 US Constitution $5 Gold and Silver $ Proof Set - FINAL entries and WINNER in p

Wow, did I ever open a bee’s nest. Here’s the sequence of events. I originally posted a giveaway for an UNC SF Silver $ to whoever came the closest to guessing the closing price.

Then, a day or two later, I had the no-so-bright idea of throwing in a “kicker” of the plat proof set if the person who made the highest bid had 1) registered that bid as his/her guess and 2) was the successful high bidder at that price. I happily admitted at the time that is was a tremendous long shot, but it COULD happen.

It was subsequently pointed out to me via PMs that this could be easily cheated by two people working in concert with a double snipe. I reluctantly withdrew the offer for the plat proof. I also offered to cancel any then current bid by a board member upon request (there were no such requests).

Also, as an act of contrition and as a way of apologizing for my mistake, I upped the original giveaway to a 1987 US Constitution silver Dollar & $5 Gold Proof Set. That is where it now stands…whoever guesses the closest to the closing bid wins the Constitution set. The last bid to be eligible most be posted no later than ONE HOUR before the auction closes.

People, I’m new here…and this was just my second selling auction on ebay. The last thing I wanted to do was offend anyone here. To those so offended, please accept my humble apology.

Sincerely,

FloridaBill

    Florida Bill,

I've noticed most folks noting their first auctions are treated cordially and well meaning advice ususally ensues.
Those posting their second should be prepared to duck.image

    pm sent and good luck.

Personally, I do not like to see a list of past mintages and prices of coins ( the last part you added). It makes the listing too long, and I stop reading then. Of course, when people stop reading, they usually will not bid on the item. Just my opinion.

I'll guess it closes at $6225.00.

    Good luck!

It is easy to change text size, color and orientation in ebays description editor when you create the auction.

I think the auction reads well. The photo of the box on what appears to be a bed spread....I would have change that to a different background. I am going to guess your auction will close at $3875.00. I know many have guessed in the 6k to 8k range but here is why I think these will sell lower, at least for now. My opinion is......when the anniversary gold sets sold out, they sold out because poeple wanted to have them. I think the platinum sold out due ot the "buzz" of them being low mintage and potentially high profit makers, not because people really wanted to have them. I purchased three 4 coin platinum sets, not because I wanted them to have, but merely as speculation and for a resale profit. I think there will be many offered on Ebay in the near future, the numbers available for auction is growing now. Additionally, I suspect some people bought on credit and want to resell before their credit card interest rates kick in. So, initially, I think these sets will not bring the premium some think. Additionally, I am not convinced they will ever bring the strong money that the 2004 platinum proof set brings.....but in time, perhaps they will. I am holding mine until I return from overseas duty in late 07 or early 08. BTW, I hope I am wrong and you sell for 6800 :-).

  • I would guess $4501. Pictures of the coins always help but since you didn't open your box, you would have to use the generic Mint pictures. People are now "conditioned" to not open the boxes due to the 20th Anniversary products. I was told by PCGS (and the other one) that they don't need OR WANT the boxes sealed on grading of these Platinum coins. They only want the coins in flips or the capsules.
    Get er done!

Might be a bad time to be selling these. I had a hard time getting to work yesterday ( at around 2:30PM ) - I'm thinking the whole world is out Christmas shopping.

But good luck anyway - maybe a few nerd coin collectors will bid your set up to $7777.77 ( or thereabouts ). image

I would have not trouble buying from this seller with an auction looking like this. The bedspread to me says 'I really have it'. The mintage facts are great along with the 'mint order'. Adding a Little color or Bold helps but don't go overboard. Use it in the right place.
IMO the resale is early to max profit but I'm sure there are reasons. So with that I feel this action will do 3675. But I hope it does a lot better.

Thanks for the chance FB. I'm gonna have to go with Geoman in his post. The other mintage fingures on other old coins makes you want to stop reading. Just like the folks selling worn out coins but listing them with "MS65 trends @ $1500!!!!" in the title. Otherwise, good layout. The people who would buy this type stuff and spend a hiney load of $$$ on it knows what they will be getting and are probably up-to-date with the figures. Although in the sellers mind, it makes you think when you're listing it, the more knowledge you have out there for comparison, the more $$$ it will bring. Maybe so, maybe not. GOOD LUCK and CONGRATS on a good purchase!

    and my guess.....$6851.00 less fees...........wes

I'll take a stab at $7500. As for the feedback here's my comments: There's a lot of text to read which kind of turned me off and except for the text how do I know what I'm really bidding on? If there was a packing slip or even receipt that would give a little reassurance.

$6350.00. It may be too soon to put these up for auction. Coin Vault was selling the MS 70 sets yesterday for $7000, but these are all gone now. My set was delivered today but I will be submitting to PCGS if any of the coins warrant a 70. Good luck with your auction.
