How about posting some 1941 coinage, and more importantly, remember those who lost their lives on that horrific Sunday morning.

    my parents weren't even born
  • Not yet born.

My dad served in the war along with four of his five brothers (one was underage). A couple were involved in combat and a ship nearly
sunk in a storm but all five came back alive.

Is "Tora Tora Tora" being shown on TV today? Probably some channel will have it, a very interesting movie.

My parents weren't even gleems in my grandparents eyes yet. Sad day in history though.

Should there be a coin commemorating this event, I think so.

Well, I wasn't around yet, but Dec 7, 1941 is what convinced my father to join the Marines (at age 17 - I think my grandmother told me he lied about his age).

He spent the next 20 years there and had quite an honored career (not quite an Audie Murphy) but lots of medals and stripes.

Dad was in the service at this time but was doomed to serve only in the USA because of a eyesight problem. 39 years ago at just about this time in the morning I was just about ready to walk into the Portland, OR induction center to begin a journey into another USA conflict had happened across the pacific ocean.

    Now a coin.....

I agree. Today's young Japanese are not what their grandparents and great-grandparents were at the time of the war. Even then it was more the imperial government than the people of Japan which was most worthy of contempt.

I hope not too, but Wes' was coin related also and the whiney forum cops got it pulled anyway.

  • I wasn't around, but my 22 year old father was a sargent in the Army Air Corp walking guard duty at Hickman Field. He remembers thinking "What are all these idiots doing in the air at this time on a Sunday morning". He also said that he would have fired his rifle at them, but the guards had been issued no ammunition...

I wasn't a gleam, yet, but my older sister supposedly happened on the afternoon of Monday, the 8th, after Dad joined the Navy and was to leave immediately.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.
  • My parents didn't even meet until 1945. My father was just 19 years old and was ruled physically unfit to serve his country. He had suffered a broken vertebrae two years before requiring spinal surgery. He was ice skating on a frozen river in North Dakota being pulled by a car on the shore (kinda like water skiing). I skidded smack into a tree on the shore. 17-year-olds do stupid things sometimes.

  • My Dad was at Pearl Harbor, was driving back to his ship with supplies in a stationwagon. He got out and took cover under a tarp covering some material, use to laugh at how stupid it was to think the tarp would protect him from injury. He spent the rest of the day taking wounded to the hospital in the stationwagon. He never wanted to talk much about that day.

I was born in 1970, so neither myself nor my parents were on this Earth at this point. Nonetheless, I have a great sense for history (probably why I collect coins) and this attack was personal for a lot of people of that generation. Great respect and thanks for those that served and those that will serve!

Here is a link to the famous FDR speech that came the day after attack. He didn't mince words or give a crap about being pc. Great speech!

I hope someone doesn't start asking these questions for every significant day of our country's history.

    But just in case...July 4, 1776? Why, I wasn't born yet.

    Seriously, December 7, 1941? I wasn't born yet.

Wasn't born yet, but my father had four cousins all serving on the Oklahoma on this day in '41. Three were brothers and one was another cousin. The three brothers survived but the cousin didn't make it.

Ay home in Dallas, Texas at the age of 7. I have visited the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor and can recommend a visit to everyone. To have look down at the Arizona and to have stood on Omaha Beach have been two of my WWll travel highlights.

Why not? As long as folks are relating it to coins, what's the big deal?

My wife and I were discussing this topic today and between us we had 8 uncles, one aunt, 2 fathers, one step-father and one ex-father-inlaw who all served this country in WWII. All came home save for one, my dad's brother John Charles who my brother was named after. This was truly an amazing generation of folks. I can only remember their participation in that conflict being brought up one time. My ex-father-inlaw and a few too many sips of whiskey and spoke to me about his experience in the Battle of Bulge, where he was a captain. I don't remember his exact words, but he tried to described finding his men dead in their foxholes after the woods were bombarded with no apparent damage except for blood seeping out of their eardrums, haveing did from the consussion.

    God Bless Them!
