Ah, but one can never have to many 1893-S's It seems to me the 93-S is under-rated. I do a google search for this date a few times a week trying to find anything above good 4.....even raw I still have trouble finding them. Everyone calls this date a Semi-Key? You can find the 04-S and 92-S with no trouble. Yes, the price of the 04-S can be a bear but you can easily find them unlike the 93-S?Not to mention the Barber's Society rates it a 5 above Fine and PCGS rates it 4.8 with 1500 pieces estimated remainig, most of those I would say are Fine or lower.
I decided to switch directions on my higher end Halves, only going for the real tough dates. Put a few more AU's on the bay. Some of these I'm in pretty deep but could sell cheaper off of Ebay.

Ken, I watch your eBay listings and...keep...trying...to...avoid...buying...AUs. I have a couple but really don't want to get drawn in to doing a set that way.
Keep watching Manorcourtman's eBay listings... he usually has some great gems hidded in his listings. Too bad you are not collecting AU Halves. The Elbesaar collection of Dimes, Quarters and Halves will be at auction in August at the Pre-ANA auction at Heritage.
Yup, the rumors are correct - I'm selling.
I removed the Dime collection from the listing below, as I retired it intact; as I sold off a dozen coins to my good friend, JMW, as his Dime collection was originally mine [ well, most of it anyway ].
I don't want this to sound like SPAM, so I won't elaborate anymore. Suffice it to say, I plan on "cherry picking" a few coins - not for rarity value but for for beautiful toning. [ The 1901-P Half in "PCGS 64+ Secure Plus" will have such a high reserve that I seriously doubt anyone will buy it. It originally came from the Queller Collection and it used to be in an "NGC 65 Star" holder. So, it'll be priced just over 65 money. ]
Yes, the 1892-O Micro O [ ex: Shireman ] in PCGS 63 Secure Plus will be in the auction. I know at least one serious collector who'll be more than interested in it. [ Right, DJ ? ]
Quite a few of my friends know that the company I have worked for the last fifteen years has filed Chapter 11 - and the court order all merchandise to be sold thru liquidators. The close out sale will last another three or four weeks - and I plan on taking the Summer off and will look for a consultation job with other licensed designers this Fall.
I may be at Summer FUN - its up in the air at the moment - but - I will be at the ANA in Chicago. I will also be assisting my friend, Glenn Holsonbake, [ Ponyexpress8 ] at the show. STONE and Dennis88 will also be there assisting Glenn as well. [ Stop by our table and look at STONE's latest find - a 1829 Curly Based "2" in PCGS VF 35. ]
Happy hunting everyone - and if there is anything I can do to assist anyone, please feel free to ask.
BTW - welcome to the Forums, my old friend "MonteCarlo".

Thanks for the "welcome", Mike. I heard from a friend that drinking the Kool Aid here brought you the same fate as the Kool Aid served at Jonestown, or was it not drinking it here brought the same fate? Probably the latter. But I've been lurking only for several years and I thought I'd "take the plunge" and start posting regularly to see for myself.
For those that don't know me, I'm a long time collector who appreciates the original look of a lusciously patinated midgrade Barber, if you know what I mean. Mike and Tyler and Tom and Dennis have known me for a long time and can vouch for my Barber insanity.

I don't know if this adds to the question of which particular mid-grade dates are more scarce than others, but I have eight dates left to complete my VF35 set. I have all of these dates (some multiples) in other grades and I also have had the chance to purchase each one in 35. But, I passed on the quality or the price of the piece offered.
MrBreeze - never pass on the coin because of the price - your list is very similar to my list in AU 58. As long as the coin is a VF 35 in your book and its in your TPG of choice, go for it. That list is a TOUGH list !!!
Send the list to Ponyexpress8 - he'll look for you. Also - move this request to the BST in case some one's nose gets out of joint.
Hope you're well.

Hey Greg!!! Yeah, that's a beast of a list! But the thrill is in the chase. Did you make an 1897P? It's a few months since I checked the pop reports and there was still a big fat 0 in that column for VF35?
ARCO is the only I know who could dig up one in his basement, I'm positive
Great to see you posting!
Do your best to avoid circular arguments, as it will help you reason better, because better reasoning is often a result of avoiding circular arguments.

Well I bought 3 93-S's...... one PCI G-4, one ANACS G-6, and a raw. Hoping to get a big good-6 out of two of them and a 4 on the third. I know, low grades but need them for the grading set. There's a PCGS good 4 on the bay right now but I dont like the reverse. Still cant find a 8........ I am submitting them all raw
The 1897 came off of eBay. I guess you (Don) and I were the sick individuals who knew an 1897 needed to be made in 35. I have absolutely loved chasing 35s ever since I heard of Craig's 45s. But, I must admit, some of my 30s are better than my 35s and some of my 35s may not truly be 35s. When you look at Cratylus' 1893-S 35, you can see why I passed on the 1893-S 35 on eBay (whoever bought it, please don't take offense). There are some very interesting coins in 35 holders, on both sides of the ledger. I like to hedge my bets (buying 35s already holdered), but I have made a few 35s myself. In the end, if I like it, I will buy it. If not, I will pass. Nine times out of ten, Patience has made me money and Impatience has cost me money. It is as simple as that.
Here is a pretty darn nice one that I would have happily kept in my own collection, but just shipped out to a client; I doubt I will get the coin back-
Well I got the 93-S F-15 and G-4. You can see the pics under the grading set. The F-15 is shinier than some of the chrome bumpers on cars here in WI after 20 winters. Dipped beyond belief. I'm suprised it holdered........pop 1 coin so I'll keep it. No disrespect to the seller at all if your on here (he listed as cleaned), still a tough coin.
No. I had an early bid, but didn't chase this one. A 20 is what I wanted when I got that 35...but I had never even seen a 20. I do think it went for fair value. I would have chased it higher if I "needed" it.

Odd that your list could be a compelling argument for 8 of the top 10 in VF35. I honestly don't see an easy pick in the bunch, and I wish you luck!

EDIT: Sat. 4/9:
Yes, the 1893-S in PCGS 63 is at the Central States' Heritage auction;
plus there is an additional very attractive 1893-S in NGC 50 as well.
If the toning of the NGC 50 was on the PCGS 63,
I might have made a play for the 63 myself.
