That's a great barber group. That half used to be mine and held a spot in my gem set for many years, until I picked up an MS 67 from the Duckor set. Congrats, you have some nice coins.
<< <i>This thread is stuck again - so - here's a little something to prime the pump... >>
For all of :39 minutes that time! Thanks for the rescue!
Your quarters are fantastic, by the way. I have to restrict myself to the Halves this time around, except for two quarters, an XF 98-s and a VF 09-o, that I couldn't pass up. I'll enjoy everyone else's two bits on the forum.
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
Nice set and nicely matched too. I saw that Half on CRO's site and had a feeling it would find a home very quickly. Didn't realize you were the previous caretaker of it Pete, it took a heck of a coin to upgrade from that one! If memory serves the Duckor coin was stupendous.

With the recent experience selling the XF 45 set at auction I am in the process of writing up two articles about barber halves (set collecting and specifics about XF 45 grades) that will be available for reading on HLRC.COM soon.
It has been very interesting for me to see coins that I once purchased as raw from a number of different sources, over the last 15 years, get them encapsulated, sell many of them on eBay mostly 7-8 years ago, see some of them go into Gary Hultman's collection, some of them go to Craig Peterson's collection, some go to MFH, some upgrade from XF 40 to XF 45 and from XF 45 to Au 50 along the way, etc. It has occurred to me that the original-looking XF barbers are so uncommon, and many of them have their "fingerprints" that I can easily recognize. For instance, from the recent Heritage FUN auction, I know that the 92-S (Tom B had the coin recently for sale on his website marked as SOLD, a very nice coin I submitted to PCGS for grading), the 98-O's in XF 45 (both were raw coins I submitted and are both very nice, one Cratylus has), the 01-O in XF 45 (I purchased from a dealer I have known from KC, MO for many years), the 14 in XF 45, and a few others all are essentially instantly recognizable by me. I never realized when I first sent most of these for grading, just how truly tough they are to find. I picked them up mostly one at a time from diverse sources.
I'll let everyone know when my articles are completed. I just have to find some time to get them finalized. I was trying to get to them this weekend, but managed to pick up two Medical Examiner autopsies to do tomorrow and will be sandwiching five swimming events in a local Master's meet, too ( 1000 free, 200IM, and the 50, 100 and 200 breaststroke).
I just got these. I think they are nice and original. Both have that nice circulated appeal to them that I like so much. I think most Barber half dollars are tough in mid-circ grades and these are probably no exception. Thanks! Richard.
I'm looking forward to seeing those articles. It's funny that you mention what you did about recognizing these coins in XF, I have actually started over the past two years noticed that a number of the same coins popping up in different places.
Oh, and that XF45 92-S? I know where it is at this very second...
Big thanks to you for making it, and Tom for selling it to me, it's an upgrade from my VF35... slowly I want to get my set from what's now a VF set with a few XFs to a higher end VF/XF set. Seeing as the chances to buy these coins can be few and far between, I felt that I needed to add it to my set.

No problem, Brian. FIRST send me YOUR Barber Halves for collateral and then I'll be happy to send mine to you. It might take 40 years before I get around to actually shipping mine, but you know I'm good for it, right?
I saw the thread ranking the later Barber Halves, if you had the rank the WHOLE series what would be the top 5 in VF-AU? Aplogize if this has been asked before.....couldn't find it anywhere.
<< <i>I saw the thread ranking the later Barber Halves, if you had the rank the WHOLE series what would be the top 5 in VF-AU? Aplogize if this has been asked before.....couldn't find it anywhere. >>
1893-S, 1896-O, 1901-S, 1904-O, 1905-O. 1897-O would be a very close #6.
I couldn't find the thread from not too long ago, Ken. EDITED: Found it here
When I first joined here after getting 'bit' by the Barber bug, I would spend about 30 min before bed time reading old threads about Barber halves, all the way back to 2001. That was an invaluable education!
I think that the 'top 5' is a little different for VF vs. XF. vs. AU
Do your best to avoid circular arguments, as it will help you reason better, because better reasoning is often a result of avoiding circular arguments.
<< <i>93-S 98-O 05-O 96-O 96-S The top 3 are the toughies >>
I gotta agree with Bill on this - I have bought and sold dozens of better middle and upper circ Barber halves the past few years, and I have never owned (nor even seen for sale at a show, that I can recall) those top three dates in VF and above.
If your head hurts...don't read this. I generally agree with everyone on their perspective of the most difficult coins to collect in a mid-grade condition...but you really have to look at the population of the grade. Understandably there are only so many coins out there in the grade you may be seeking...whether it's a VF-35 96-O or 96-S XF-45, or AU-58. As a personal account, since I'm an XF-45 collector, there are certain coins that I focus on. However, it also depends on the collector...even though the 96-S in XF-45 is shown as a pop value of five...you may have one...and not consider this rare...but for those that are seeking that specific coin...it is hard to find. Look at the Population Reports...it will give you an idea of what's rare...despite the rarity ratings posted by BCCS. Sometimes these coins only come up every couple of years...if you want to complete your collection you have to recognize what the market provides you...sometimes its crappy...other times there may be some really good values. Bottom line...we have to evaluate what's presented at the moment and determine if we believe the coin is worth an offer...or pass. As for my personal evaluation on what's hard to find or rare, I offer the following for XF-45 only: 96-P 96-S 96-O 97-O 97-S 02-S 05-O But there are others out there that are equally troubling...such as the 01-S, 08-S, 10-S, 07-P, 14-P....Ifor example, I had a heck of a time trying to secure an 07-P...couldn't find one that would cross or certify...but then I got lucky...but it took me two years. Once again, the population reports say a lot...but it depends on availability and what collectors are willing to release. Sorry for the monologue...but just my seven 1/2 cents.
When I first started to collect, I started with two common but perfect set of VF barber halves that I've acquired from Tyler, which they were the most beautiful half dollars I've ever seen and fell in love at first sight! My goal then was to build a matching VF set.. but then no luck finding near what I had.. so I changed to the Fine set looking for that same crusty looking.. but nada, zip, can't stand cleaned.. then I gave up.. almost, until I found the most amazing looking half and it's a key date too! So to make a long story short I'm back to where I started as my current goal is to build a XF set.
I originally found it "naked" and I felt compelled to "dress" it as quickly as possible. ..care to grade?
So it says here that this list is: 05-O, 95-S, 01-O, 02-S, 93-S, in that order. >>
I'd be curious to see what would happen to these numbers if the pops for NGC, ANACS, and ICG were added.
Moreover, it would be my contention that certain "popular" key dates (96-O, 97-O, 01-S, 04-S) tend to be slabbed more frequently, whereas some semi-key dates (95-S, 01-O, and 02-S) tend to be slabbed less frequently. So my hunch is that the numbers are probably inflated for the 96-O, 97-O, 01-S, and 04-S and probably deflated for the 95-S, 01-O, and 02-S. That being taken into consideration, the actual Top Five list probably is different than what the PCGS pops show.
Additionally, my list takes into account my own experience in searching for coins in the VF30 - XF45 range with a specific "look" to them. So, for instance, lustrous XF45s are out there, but I want my XF45s to be dirty and crusty instead... which limits the pops even further for what I am looking for.

I'm not sure about certain coins being slabbed more frequently than others but sometimes I wonder...I have a beautiful 97-S, XF-45 that warrants certification by PCGS but have been unable to do so...and it causes me to wonder that maybe PCGS wants to protect the population by restricting the number of certified coins in this grade. As for other challenging coins in the XF range, the 95-S , 96-S, 99-O, 01-O, 02-S, 05-P, 09-S, 10-S, 10-P, 11-D, 11-S, 13-S, all have a population of five or less...and are challenging to collect. That's really a neat item! What's also interesting is that it shows after 22 years in circulation how quickly these coins got worn down to G.
