Mike thanks for the info on the quarter set, too. Somehow I missed it as I clicked on barber quarters but forgot to choose upcoming auctions first and didn't see the set listed. The sets have obviously been put together with some recent acquisitons as there are coins from the Richmond collection and others that look familiar. I do appreciate collectors who wish to be anonymous for ANY reason and look forward to viewing the coins from the Southwest Collection and wish the consignor well.
Coming back down to earth a bit, here is a recent purchase in my grade and price neighborhood. Was able to get this for a decent price (75.98GBP or about $148) in a backwater category ("Other") on Ebay. I would grade this coin VF30. Does that seem reasonable?
<< <i>I recently added a very nice PCGS, AU-53, 1901-S Barber Half to my set. The coin has beautiful steel gray fields and attractive bronze color toning in the obverse fields. My scans don't really pick up the attractive toning or the luster on the coin. The coin is virtually mark free, with nice smooth surfaces. On the reverse, what appears to be a scratch between the I and the T in United, is on the holder and not the coin. When I finally start my PCGS registry set, it's nice to know that I have the 01-S covered in a higher circ grade.
>>
A coin that deserves another look - wouldn't you all agree ?
Sweet coin, Dan...very sweet.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Pocket piece is coming along slowly. I only do it at work. I have three pennies from the 1960's that go with the half. Should be ready to go by Baltimore late next month. I will also crack out that XF40 and submit both at once.
1. a 1613 I Danish Mark. Note the strike doubling on the coin. PCGS graded it AU50. Coin still has lots of original luster and is actually crustier in person. This coin did not Tru-View well. Still, a very cool coin that is almost 400 years old and been in my family for as long as anyone can remember. Value- Approx $400
2. A 1735 Brunswick-Luneberg-Calenberg 1 Thaler. I love the circulated cameo toning on this dollar size coin. I would love to buy a Bust dollar with this look. PCGS graded as VF35. Value-Approx $150
3. 1483-1486 English 1/2 Groat. The neat thing about this coin is that this is the exact amount a "Groundling" would pay in order to see Shakespeare. So, this coin could have easily passed through Shakespeare's hands. PCGS graded as XF40. Value-Approx. $100ish.
Another Forum Member, Bushmaster, inquired which quarters I wanted to upgrade. After reviewing the list of what he has available, he is sending me the following:
The above 1893-O is in a PCGS AU 58 holder.
The following coin is in an ANACS 58 holder; for whatever reason, this coin was originally in a PCGS 58 holder and someone cracked it out - finally submitting it to ANACS. Its going back to PCGS for cross over once I have enough coins to put together a submission for just cross overs !!
Again, a special thank you to Dave99B for resizing these images for me. Another Forum Member, Bruceswar, advised me that it was he who imaged these two coins to begin with. Excellent job !!
BTW, no word yet on my seven submissions at PCGS.

Nice looking Barber quarters. I currently have 6 ANACS graded coins over at PCGS for crossovers......they seem to be a little slower than usual. Here's a nice PCGS, VF-35, 1911-S Barber half, that arrived today.....care of JJ Teaparty. I'm still waiting for my PCGS, AU-58, 1907 Barber half to be delivered.
1893 Isabella AU58 1892-O Half XF45 was NGC XF45---------MHF-----it's the one I posted in the 92-O thread last week. 1898-S Half cleaned was NGC XF40 1903-O Half VF30 picked up raw at coin show.
Pics will be posted when I have them in hand
Yes, I CRACKED the 92-O and 98-S out. The 98-S was in an older NGC holder.
Didn't think the 98-S would be a problem-------I must have missed something
FYI---the other 2 coins were a 1859 IHC AU58 and a 1798 dollar, large eagle F12
The PCGS, AU-58, 1907 Barber half arrived the other day and it's a beauty. I normally stay away from white coins, but this coin has a light shade of gold tone, is totally mark free, and has the look of a MS-63 coin, at first glance.
Mike,
I love the look of your 1892, nice shimmering luster under gold toning, it doesn't get any better than that!
Barberman55 and MHF----I saw those two pieces on JJT. Is it me or are their pics kind of crappy? Never bought from them before. Does their stuff look better in hand?
I have mentioned to the gals at JJ Teaparty that I thought their images could be better - and - they have improved somewhat over the past year. However, they're not perfect. { The best images are by Mike Printz of Larry Whitlow's, IMHO }.
Feel confident to order from JJ Teaparty - if you don't like the coin - just send it back in a timely manner. They really are great to work with. I have been using them since at least 1994 on a regular basis. They have maintained by Want List - and have procured most of my Barbers for me.

This is not a new coin - far from it ; as I bought this at a Heritage auction in June, 2002. Its image was never put into my computer - for what ever reason - maybe because I didn't have a computer then ... ...anyhow...here's my 1904-P in AU 58 [ I crossed this NGC 58 to PCGS in 2005 ].

Broadstruck - Life was a whole lot simpler before I got internet access - that's for sure - and my purchases were alot fewer and further inbetween. That's a pretty funny placard you attached. Also, I have to agree, the 1904-P is a special coin; its beautifully toned.
Tombr - Nothing yet from the Cross Over Submission. Its been over a month - I should receive some info soon, I would think.
Barberman55 and I have come to an arrangement on his duplicate 1901-S in PCGS 53; I should receive it by this weekend; its scheduled for my 2nd tier collection - as I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my other 1901-S in ANACS 55 will cross as an AU 55 with PCGS. My other 01-S in XF 40 will slide into my 3rd tier set. I also picked up another "quadruplicate" 01-S in PCGS VF 25 from Brandon Johnson and that one's scheduled to be cracked out for the Dansco album.

As long as we're discussing 1901-S Barber halves, here's a beauty that I recently sold to a board member. The coin is graded by PCGS, VF-20. I purchased the coin raw a couple of years ago and had it slabbed by PCGS a few months ago. In hand, the toning is slightly lighter in color than my image.
Very nice original, 98-O Barber quarter. The 98-O is very tough to find in the upper circ grades......similar to the 09-O. Congratulations on a very nice pickup.
I had to go digging to find this thread down on page 4 or 5 ... I don't get new Barber images too often, as my MS quarter set is complete, and I don't get to add new coins (upgrades) very often at all. I decided a while ago that my set should include both Type I and Type II reverse coins for the P, O, and S issues of 1892. i was missing an 1892-O quarter with the Type I reverse. The following descriptive text from my set tells this story, and below is the beautiful gem that finally filled this hole:
Type I Reverse. After searching for a suitable example of the Type I variety of this issue for quite some time, we are thrilled to add this gem New Orleans quarter to our collection. Original skin, excellent surfaces, and absolutely beautiful toning make this coin a natural fit for this set. Many thanks are owed to Mike Stefano of Jade Rare Coins, who had studied the notes to this Registry Set carefully enough to know that we were looking for an 1892-O Type I. Mike recognized "Sunnywood" visiting the Jade Rare Coins table at a Baltimore convention and mentioned that he had just placed this beautiful gem '92-O Type I quarter with a client. Mike kindly offered to try to broker a deal with his client to sell the coin to the Sunnywood Collection. This worked out well for all concerned, and the coin now happily resides here. Thanks again to Mike Stefano and Jade Rare Coins for this treasure !!
Got one submission's grades back this evening: 02/07/08. See Submission # 3572779. All Barber Half Dollars.
I'm not surprised at the results at all. The 1892-O EX: NGC 40 is now PCGS XF 35 - still think its a 40. The 1896-S EX: NGC XF 45 is now a PCGS 40 - again, I think its a 45 any day of the week. The 1904-S EX: ANACS 20 was clearly undergraded and it came back in the correct grade : PCGS VF 25.
