I ran into a couple of nice upgrades/ additions to my quarter collection.
The 1892-O is a Type One, and although I already had another Type One in AU 55, I thought this was a worthy upgrade. I also have another AU 58 of a Type Two Variety, but sorry to say, no images of the Type Two.
The 1896-O is also an upgrade, as I have another in AU 53:

Well, my contacts ANACS XF45 came back as cleaned by PCGS. BUMMER. I put out a solicitation on the BST and on the Registry Forum. I'll pay $500 for the coin. Anyone?
I am getting very close to pocket piecing my AU50. Think I can wear it down to XF45 in a month and get it ready for Baltimore?

If you pocket piece the AU-50, be careful not to wear it past XF-45......now that would be a real BUMMER!
Mike,
I like your upgrades.....nice original looking Barber quarters.
As if I need to tell you - of all people - that an XF 45 of 1905-P only has a POP 2 @ PCGS and a POP 1 @ NGC
I also have not seen this date & condition registered to anyone at either Registry. Looks like the AU 50 you have might very well become a pocket piece...sorry to say.
I'd still keep looking at raw coins before I did that, as I would think only a percentage of XF 45's out there have already been certified.
Good luck, and sorry to hear that PCGS BB'd the ANACS 45.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Craig, Sorry to hear about the ANACS XF-45 coming back from PCGS as cleaned...I've had that happen to me on two occasions in the past two months...one for an NGC coin and the other an ANACS. I'm not sure if PCGS is just being overly conservative (or downright contrary) or if the other TPG's are being too liberal. Nonetheless, don't give up hope...there's a 1905 out there with your name on it!
I am certain it will take much more than a month as a solo pocket piece. But check it once a week -- just to make sure. I wouldn't put it in with other coins either, to speed up the process: too risky IMHO. Watching it every day will not be good for your mental health however. You may want to consult some pocketpiece experts on this. I got advice last year as have been testing on some mishandled commems for about a year now (a couple of better date, picked up cheap).
DrPete said something to me a while back that really struck me, as one who has never completed a set of anything-- paraphrased of course-- <Don, what are you going to do when the Barber set it is done? Enjoy the chase...it'll never be back again like it is now.>
But also keep the Champagne ready.
Regrets about the BB
Don
Do your best to avoid circular arguments, as it will help you reason better, because better reasoning is often a result of avoiding circular arguments.
Gentlemen, I'd appreciate some opinions on this 14-S I picked up. It looks XF-45 to me, but there are two rim dings at 2 o'clock on the obverse above the word TRUST. Should I send it in, or do you think PCGS will BB it. The third pic is a closeup of the area.
tombr, those 2 rim bumps on a XF coin bother me less then if the coin was harshly hairlined and dipped. It's a nice coin for a modestly circulated example as this coin still has original surfaces. Not sure what PCGS would do, but the bumps look less offensive in your close-up pics.
To Err Is Human.... To Collect Err's Is Just Too Much Darn Tootin Fun!
Oh Craig, I think one of those 06 D 45's was mine. It crossed up from an NGC 40. I was actually shocked. Just threw it to complete my group of 8 free grades.
My 04-s and 07-s just made 45 after that list published. You could triple the pops for everything that matters in the set in 45 and it's still a stupid rare grade. I humbly submit that opinion before the likes of USCGCraig who RULES.
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
I just received the newest POP Report yesterday and most halves are still very low in POP's. I have not had the time to do a comparison between the previous POP Report but thanks for giving some of the differences.
I also received the newest Stack's catalog and there are some very nice AU halves about to hit the block.
One in particular has caught my eye - yup, you know its the 01-S - in an ANACS 55 holder. If I'm fortunate to win the bidding, I pray it crosses.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
USCGCraig....I looked this morning at Santa Clara for that elusive 05p and all I saw were two raw in Au+, one being actually sweet as heck, all original, at the same seller's table no less. Another in jacked vf someplace else. Sorry. Scored a sweet original raw 14p in xf45, though for my date set. Also stopped by home base and plunked down $52 to have my 09o xf45 half crossed over from across the street. Hope that goes well.
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
Picked this up today at a coin show in Hanover, PA. Looks like a solid VF35, might even go XF40. I thinks it's a good strike for an O mint. What do ya think?
You right about the washing Craig-----------It's darker in hand. Doesn't looked cleaned to me, but I'm gonna send her and we'll see. I'll post it when it gets back. I need to practice my photography. I DID look for an 05P for you. No luck. Talked to a couple vendors and they said ALL mid grade Barber Halves are getting tougher to come by--as if we didn't know. There was a good looking 14S, but I already have one. That was about it for mid grades. Getting ready for Baltimore.
Speaking of Baltimore----what say us Barber Nuts Meet and have a burger or something? Any takers?
Craig--thanks for the info on the pops...a couple of the XF-45's may have been mine...nonetheless there seems to be a stimulated interest in collecting (including my own interest) and selling these coins. I went to a mid-size coin show over in Lakeland a couple of weekends ago...only a few raw mid-grades and none certified at XF-45. As the dealers all told me, they are hard to find--you're better off working another collection--but if you do find any mid-grades, grab them because they're a hot commodity. With your collection Craig you may have generated a lot of interest--good for the industry and great for the collectors.
I'm just wondering though...with the increase in mid-grade pops how will that affect price levels...obviously increased supply will drive prices down but just wondering if there is enough supply out there (even with the increased pops) to worry about. I don't think the keys will be affected (at least not yet) but it may drive prices down for some of the common dates. Comments anyone?
Craig - no, I'm not going after just 45's, just upgrades in my 2nd tier set. I bought Glenn Holsombake's AU 58 about a year ago and sold off my AU 55 - leaving me with only a raw VF 20 in my Dansco album. I hemmed and hawed about this coin, but it looked nice and just bit the bullet.
Dave - I can see your reasoning about the higher prices bringing out more coins - but the demand is still there and I really don't see any drop in prices for choice material. Common dated coins will be somewhat stagnent but the semi-keys and keys will be absorbed in the collecting fraternity at even higher prices. Choice AU 58's are easily selling at MS 62-63 prices...which leaves me to believe that there eventually be some price adjustments in the lower end MS coins - although by comparison, the lower end MS coins are vastly more available than the AU 58's. I know there are no 1897-S halves certified by PCGS in AU 58. My example was purchased raw as an AU 58 and it graded AU 53...which I disagreed with but on resubmission I hope to get an AU 55 out of it.
I know we're all looking for the 1905-P in XF 45 for Craig, but to no avail. I'm hoping to locate an NGC 50 to send into PCGS "at cross at any grade" or just specifically at an XF 45. That very well be Craig's only hope of locating the last coin in his set. The way I look at it, if Tyler can't find that coin, then noone can.

Here's a sweet little beauty I just won on eBay...
I'm finding it alot easier to add coins into the empty
slots on the Registry rather than rip apart the Dansco album
just to complete the entire series. Plus I really like the
