Ok gang, hold on to your hats. Look what I've just added to my collection! I've been lusting after this baby since Rob (66RB) first posted this about a year ago and it arrived today.
This monster Barber thread is a year old now and I'm glad to say, still going strong. What a great source for the Barber collector, both old and new, to view some truly remarkable Barber coins......and maybe learn a little bit along the way. Keep it going, 1000 posts is just around the corner!

I'm really the one who should be dancing ...I'm the proud owner of Casey's other 1895-S :
PCGS graded : AU 58
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Here's a raw 1897-P...not AU but probably about an XF-43/44...possibly XF-45...but it looks like it has been cleaned--particularly on the reverse...opinions?
Broadstruck---thanks...looks cleaned to me too. XF-43/44? Better than an XF-40 but just shy of XF-45...not conventional but helps a novice grader like me to visualize where the coin falls within the various grading scales.
<< <i>Well, here is the coin again. Just need to be careful so I don't wear down too much. >>
Craig,
Pretty coin.....kind of a shame to have to intentionally wear her down. Don't forget to take her out of your pants pocket before washing your pants. Best of luck!!!
I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector. Recipient of the coveted "You Suck" award, April 2009 for cherrypicking a 1833 CBHD LM-5, and April 2022 for a 1835 LM-12, and again in Aug 2012 for picking off a 1952 FS-902.
Broadstruck, I'll leave that coin alone...wouldn't want that old cleaned XF-41 anyway!
Craig, congrats on the coin...that's a sweet looking Barber...maybe if you put a chopmark on it or something they could knock it down to XF-45...I know, take a brillo pad and rub it a little bit...that will certainly get you in the ball park! Maybe there will be an 05-P/45 at the FUN show...will keep my eyes open.
Very nice 1905-P in AU 50 you've got there...please be careful carrying this piece in your pockets...don't throw your car keys in that pants pocket !!!
Would die if I heard the coin BB'd for a scratch !!
I know we're all looking for you - I am searching any NGC 50's that I know PCGS would be happy to give an XF 45 to !!
I also had to smile on the NewBarberGuy's decimal grading.
Just wait - in a short amout of time, coinage at PCGS will follow the currency suit of a 100 point system.
The MS grades would be also a 10 point scale - just as they are now; the lesser grades would be subject to grades in XF 70, 72, 75, 77, 79
I know I read somewhere - some time ago - what the scale would be. If PCGS - and the other TPG's did go on a 100 point sale - they'd have a financial windfall.
Add to that the current jabbing about CAC stickers... an AU 82 with an NGC Star and a CAC sticker saying its solid for the grade. Why, the AU 82 coin just may make it into an AU 83 holder.
Oh, Brother, I can hardly wait.
Sorry - nothing new to show tonight - unless you like Washington proof quarters...OT on this thread.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Craig, I think Mike's on to something there...send the 05-P to NGC to crossover...they'll most likely cross it at AU-50, then send it back to PCGS and they'll surely downgrade it to XF-45...then voila...you're done!

Simply genius! Yes, ....Seriously. I learned quickly to crack out NGC coins before submitting to PCGS, ...but if you want a lock DOWNgrade, cross it.
Don
Do your best to avoid circular arguments, as it will help you reason better, because better reasoning is often a result of avoiding circular arguments.
Very nice 1909-O half and a solid XF 45 - no matter which TPG graded it.
-------------------------------------
With regard to sending the 1905-P in PCGS 50 over to NGC - Craig, you could request an AU 50 grade , which you should receive , then send it back into PCGS and request a cross over to XF 45; we all know PCGS won't lower the grade to XF 40 as its clearly finer than that. I'm a little nervous about using the coin as a pocket piece. Whatever you end up deciding to do, we're all backing your try.
-------------------------------------
Dan,
When are you going to add your recent crossovers to the NGC Registry ... better yet, when are you going to start a set here ?
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Funny as it sounds the whole PCGS to NGC back to PCGS trips might actually get you the grade you want on the insert at only an extra $80 in fees and shipping.
Could you just ask for a XF45 on a PCGS regrade?
To Err Is Human.... To Collect Err's Is Just Too Much Darn Tootin Fun!
I have to agree on Dogwood's 1909-O.....solid XF-45 in any holder. If that coin didn't cross, I would really start to wonder.
The coins I crossed from ANACS to PCGS, will be entered in my NGC registry set very soon. I'm picking up the coins from my PO on Monday, then I'll enter them into the registry. I don't like to do anything before I have the coins in hand.
I have quite a few NGC graded coins in my Barber half set (some nice one's too), so when I eventually start a PCGS registry set, the amount of coins in the set would be significantly smaller.
Thanks. Glad to show the 09-o but more importantly, a big to NewBarberGuy on his new Date Registry set that booted mine back a notch to #10 Awaiting renewal time and the 8 freebees to send in 1893-s, 1901-o, 1902-s, 1914-p, among others, that I think have a great shot at 45.
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.

Raw, as were all the coins in my set but for the aforementioned 09-o prior to my submission to The House. Slabbies cost too much. Well, so do bodybagged mistakes but I trust my chances with this batch.
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
Dogwood, Congrats on the 09-O, hard to find and verrrrry nice! When you get time, I would be interested in seeing pics of the 93-S and the 02-S...two other very hard to find coins. Sorry about bumping you but I had a couple of other coins that didn't fit into my 45 set and included them in the date set...throw in a few AU's and you'll climb the ladder quickly on the date set. Good luck on your submissions...I hope PCGS is good to you--Christmas is right around the corner!
Would y'all care if I posted a Barber Mint Error plug with pics of what's available on the market, under the radar screen, or coming up at auction on a regular basis?
P.S. ONLY 50 MORE POSTS UNTIL MFH GIVES AWAY A MS64 TONED 25C!!!

Thanks newbarberguy, You called me on my fish story, because these two probably are solid 40 at best Now the OTHER ones...THOSE are 45. We'll let The Man decide. 1893-s [/IMG] 1902-s Just couldn't carry the resized reverse image over. Anyway thanks for asking about them.

Here's a new XF45 1904-S I just picked up.
BTW That dime has got it going on, Casey
Tough coin the 04-S; as a matter of fact, it was one of the last dimes I found for my set.
Broadstruck,
Very nice 1901 dime...as Casey asked, what's it grade ?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rceived Casey's old 1895-S dime today - its a keeper - very nice.
Also received the 1896 quarter - its nicer in hand than the image.
