MFH, glad to see you're still alive and well...hope you are enjoying your vacation. Don, great looking 14...don't worry about other opinions on VF-20's...what's important to you is all that matters. Great looking AU coins all around.
Thanks for the comments on the 92-O Craig and Don. I don't have the coin back yet but the note on the PCGS submission check web page indicated the NGC XF-45 92-O was not graded because of "scratch/rim dent". The only tiny nick I saw (as Craig pointed out) was at 12:00 on the reverse...I didn't see any significant scratches. In any case I'm faced with a dilemma now...sell it in its present holder (NGC), resubmit as a crossover in a few months, or crack it out and hope for the best. Since I have a fair amount of money tied up in it I'm inclined to sell it in its present holder. Thoughts?
FYI, of the five crossovers I just submitted, here's the tally: 1892-O NGC XF-45: "scratch/rim dent" 1899-O ANACS XF-45: PCGS XF-45 1899-S NGC AU-50: PCGS XF-45 1900-O NGC XF-45: PCGS XF-45 1908-O NGC XF-45: "cleaning"
3 out of 5 probably isn't bad but just goes to demonstrate the disparity between the different TPG's.
Yes. Dave was kind enough to send me an email as well. Thanks Dave. This coin could do it as I am slowly trying to work a deal for a 97-S in PCGS XF45.
I'm sure QDB will be very impressed with this accomplishment, as are all your fellow Barber buddies. Great job and congratulations on nearing completion of your XF set.
Dr Pete...that's an awesome looking coin! Wish I could find an XF-45 with that toning!
Okay guys, I'm gonna post a few pics of some coins I just got back from PCGS. Since I'm a little disappointed with the grades, I'd like your opinions on what you think they graded/should have graded at. Depending on the response, I may resubmit one or all for regrading. Here's the first one:
This is a 1913-S I bought raw...beautiful coin with excellent tone and strike...what do you think?
Here's another one...it's a 1912-D I also bought raw...excellent tone and patina, excellent strike, with no major flaws...opinions?
Okay, the final coin for this morning...also purchased raw, it's a 1908-P with excellent gold toning with one ding to the right of the lips and another little ding on the neck...comments?
Three nice coins. You're developing a good eye for original Barber halves in the grade range you're collecting.
My first hand guesses:
1908-P... first thought it could XF 45, changed my opinion to XF 40 on second look. 1912-D... first impression, XF 45, then thought it'd grade XF 40 on the second look. 1913-S... first and last impression, its an XF 40; it just makes the XF 40 grade, IMHO.
I then looked up the cert. numbers...
...now, let others make their own minds up.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Love that 13-S. Great look. You are doing very well picking up raw pieces.
I'd go with XF40 across the board. The forehead hair just doesn't have quite enough detail for XF45.
I then looked up the certs. Interesting. Waiting for everyone else's thoughts.
BTW, I am very close to consumating the deal for the 97-S. The gentleman is on vaction for awhile and we will work out the details when he returns. He also has an ANACS XF45 1905-P we might work out a deal for as he would get my AU50.
Bidding on a sweet raw 05-P but after Dave's grades, I'll bet this new piece will grade XF40.
I also thought XF-40 across the board......I guess this must be the start of the tougher grading standards for PCGS. I recently joined the PCGS, Platinum Level membership, and submitted 8 raw Barbers to them (free submissions for joining). I can't wait to see how they grade them!
Thanks to another Forum member, I'm thrilled to report that my quest for a nice Mid Range 1893-S is now over and will be included in my second tier set:
Thx, BFJ.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Mike, Craig, Don S, and Dan F, Thank you all for your comments on the three coins...I suppose I was struck with a little too much optimism when I purchased the coins. XF-45's are a really tough coin to grade...it's that very fine line between XF-40 and AU-50. If you didn't get a chance to check the cert #'s here's how the three came back: 13-S: VF-35 12-D: VF-35 13-S: XF-40
Dan I hope you have better luck on those eight barbers than I did with these. I think in my case they were a little too conservative but as Don S indicated, they may not have liked some of the tones/colors.
Craig, thanks for the comments and congrats on the 05-P purchase! And good luck with PCGS...that's a sweet coin and I hope it comes back as an XF-45. Good luck with the 97-S and the other 05-P...if you happen to wind up with an extra 05-P XF-45 on your hands let me know...I'll gladly take it off your hands.
Mike, thanks for the wisdom and candid comments. I'll let everyone know if I decide to have them regraded. Regards, Dave
Thanks for the Kudos everyone regarding the 1893-S half; that sure is one hard coin to locate unmolested...most everything you see around has been played with at one time or another.
A special Thank You to Brandon Johnson for selling me this coin, as he upgraded the XF 40 for a fantastic PCGS AU 58.
I also have another image to add on another recent aquisition but will wait until I have the coin in hand.
Craig, yes, I too noticed that 1901-S in PCGS XF 45 that just sold on Ebay. Great detail of course as it was an XF 45, but those tick marks all over the obverse turned me off.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Dave, that 13-S is right up my alley. What a nice coin. If you ever tire of her, let me know. Mike, too bad that 93-S is a 40, it would look really nice as a 35, in my collection, of course. Good job keeping this thread alive, everyone. I still like to look back at some of the coins that were posted many moons ago.

DrDon...I wish I were away for 3 months...10 weeks is exactly three weeks shy of three months !!
Yes, I think I may need better reading glasses - especially for Dimes. I do like the AU 55 Hawaiian I spotted but I'm not going there...at least not at this moment.
I alluded to another pick up a few days ago...and our resident computer guru, Dave99B, resized the coin I picked up from JJ Teaparty...1894-O Quarter PCGS AU 58...its a nice upgrade over the AU 55 in my set...

Here's an update for you Barber Half fans. Just sent my 97-S XF40 off to gentleman in which I hope to consumate a trade with. I hope to get his 97-S XF45 here shortly.
Also, just submitted a couple of raw 05-P's and a 98-P to go with my Jeff spouse gold coins. I'll let you know how they turn out.
It seems ironic that the last date you needed in XF 45 is the 1897-S, will also me the last coin I'll locate in AU 58.
Glad to hear you finally located one in XF 45. Congratulations.
As you know I've been slowly upgrading my coins to AU 58. I checked the POP's of the 97-S in AU 58... ZERO. Highest graded AU is an AU 55.
I bought my coin raw as an "AU 58" - which I graded AU 55 -and I kept it knowing full well I'd never get as nice a coin again for many years - and when I submitted it to PCGS, I was a bit taken back that it graded as an AU 53... sorry, no pictures of it yet.
The latest in my quarter collection and an upgrade, recently "won" on the latest Superior Galleries auction...

Mike good to see you back from vacation and your recent quarter additions. Very nice 94-O and the 93-S half too. Are you going to focus more on quarters now?
Craig congratulations on getting so close I hope the news is good soon and you can tell us you have it completed. Amazing accomplishment.
Dr. Pete congratulations on your new 68. No matter what holder it's in that is just one of the monsters of Barber Halves that you can count on one hand probably. And maybe the number 1.
Steve nice additions to your Dansco.
Pinnacle has several of Dale Friends quarters he recently sold and boy do they look beautiful. I am so tempted to get one.
Thanks Mike. I'll let it go a few days and give the answer. I haven't posted much, but I'm going to start doing it more. I've seen alot of your posts and you have some nice stuff too.
Thanks Craig. I see your REAL close to you XF45 set! Congrats. I've been following this thread since it started-----haven't had the nerve to post much. You guys have have some really awesome Barbers I recently sent a few in for crossover. The 06-D NGC XF40 got bumped to a XF45 I'll post it when it comes back.
