Just wanted to thank my Secret Santa for the two cards he sent me: PSA 8 Topps rookie Steve Yzerman and a PSA 8 OPC rookie Pat Lafontaine. I think my SS was Blind Flyer but not certain. The gift was nicely wrapped too. I will try and post some scans in due time, but that is not my forte.

Hope whovever received my gift enjoys it.

  • Eyebone ..... glad you liked the two hockey rookies!

I was a bit worried they wouldn't make it from California to Eastern Canada in time ... very happy to hear it went well.

Happy Holidays and enjoy the cards!

Well my secret santa gift was nothing short of spectacular!! It took me almost an hour to go through everything. I got a huge lot of HOFers and rookies from 1978 - 1985. I got all the big names in the 84 Donruss set including the Mattingly and a few graded cards too. I also got a bunch of Nolan Ryans, Cal Ripkens, Pete Rose, Bretts, Younts, Schmidts, a Clemens Rookie, a Pucket rookie, and tons more. I will post a pic hopefully this evening. I want to thank my Santa for an incredible gift. I had alot of fun going through all of the cards. Your generosity was very appreciated!

It's really hard to believe what I'm reading... I can understand being PO'd that you got nothing at all (which you still may), but belly-aching because you didn't get what you asked for or it wasn't enough is "so not Christmas." Come on, we're talking $25, not some sort of entitlement. If it were me being disappointed on the receiving end, I would just take the high road and keep quiet about it & focus on the spirit of the holiday, family, etc.

  • << <i>To noone in particular,

This thread brought a group of strangers closer then Wham, turned to sh*t.

It's a flippin $25 gift exchange and not about the damn SMR value. What did you expect?.. Now please enjoy what you do have and not what you didn"t receive.

This was a nice gesture by the organizers and I'm grateful for getting something. But, I believe I can speak for the majority when saying it really was about sending a gift that someone wouldn't get otherwise. And not running to your freakin SMR hoping for the big score, being disappointed then blasting someone's kind gesture in a public forum.

To those that are willing to send more to such whiners; Couldn't your stuff be sent to others that may be more deserving?

Now do yourself a favor and stop embarrasing yourself and the other, unselfish board members.

*I apologize for sounding like my mum. >>

I disagree with this post wholeheartedly.

If I signed up to a gift exchange where the minimum cost of items is supposed to be $25 -- I'd expect something at least in that range. I wouldn't expect something specific, but would certainly not be happy with what was described as a "pile of late 80's, early 90's junk in EX-MT condition that wouldn't fetch $5 on a good day."

No one was "running to their SMR for a big score" --- people just want something in the approx cost range as intially established.

I sent my person two PSA-slabbed cards that cost (via ebay, shipped) between $25-65, depending on the deal you can find. Do I expect that exact in return? No -- of course not. But I do expect something to have a "cost value" of close to $25.

Though I was not a part of this, I agree with blindflyer's take. A STANDARD was set and the STANDARD should have been followed at the least. Gosh, this sounded like one of those ridiculous lots that people sell on ebay to screw the unsuspecting.

As much as this is the season to be giving, everyone enjoys receiving too...and the pride by showing off your goods proves that.

There are some incredibly generous people on these boards. I have enjoyed seeing the generosity. But what happened to Bri and GregM is like a Christmas scam.

Im sure this will not muck up their holdiays.

I hope everyone here had a wonderful Christmas (or which ever holiday you celebrate) and all have the best year of your life to come!

I thought I'd throw in my two cents and say I agree with the last two posts. I hate to see a fellow board member get or feel shafted.

I hope my guy got his gift and likes it too. I haven't seen a post from him on any thread for some time.

Just wanted to thank my Secret Santa again, I had fun opening my packs.

Got a nice chrome card, a chrome refractor, and a black refractor (numbered to 52!), as well as a Joseph Addai rookie. Fun stuff.

Sorry to hear about the couple of issues that occured on this exchange. I would like to thank whomever sent my cards. I received several raw cards of Barry Sanders, one being an 89 Score and another being a 89 Pro Set. Thanks!!

You should apologize for ALOT more than that. Someone sends me 5 garbage late 80's cards and thought that was an acceptable gift ?

In no way am I a person to complain about anything given to me, but this was an exception. What I received was a disgrace, and if you had been in my place Im sure you would have felt a level of dissapointment too.

To consider what I got a " kind gesture " is pitiful.

To say I was whining or selfish shows alot of YOUR character.

To say I have embarrassed myself is a total and complete joke, and in fact I think your negative response to my post should be an embarrassment to yourself.

As for whoever sent me the junk, THEY SHOULD be embarrassed for putting zero effort and caring into the project.

Im sorry if I have put a negative spin on this thread. There are so many very good people on here who are willing to give the shirt of their backs for others. Unfortunately I was paired up with someone who is the exact opposite of everything the others stand for.

In deference to the time and energy I spent putting this "GIFT EXCHANGE" together, I humble ask ( beg??) that all negativity be REMOVED from this thread.

Feel free to start your own thread towards that regard................

I understand where some of you are coming from, but lets keep this thread where it was intended to be.

I have a feeling that some of the "issues" mentioned will straighten themselves out.

    I thank you in advance.......

The enjoyment I am getting hearing of everyones great gifts fat outweighs anything I felt about my own.

  • I'm not a very emotional person, but some of the earlier comments on here almost put me to tears. Reason being because I'm new to this whole thing. I haven't collected in years and I gave away a large amount of my most precious cards. I don't collect graded cards so I had to sift through my entire collection to find things that add up to $25. Then I felt horrible because I knew that the person getting my gifts would probably be pissed. I sent out some nice stuff that was WELL OVER $25 dollars. I know I wasn't the one that sent that stuff out in the original comments, but guys I'm glad to see we've moved on. Just to let you know it's tough for some of us amateur collectors and those just getting started to come up with things.
So please be patient with us. We are trying our best to be great at this hobby. Thank you to everyone who has helped us better our collection! And whomever sent me the 1985 PSA 9 or 8 (can't remember, it's in the other room) Topps Roger Clemens thank you! It's my first graded card! Merry Christmas everyone!
  • Guru,

The gift exchange wasn't limited to things only in your personal collection. There was plenty of notice for anyone to go onto ebay (or into their local shop) and purchase a gift for their participant.

It's great to have you aboard and glad you're a part of the group --- I just think that overall people should always try and put themselves in the other person's shoes whenever they submit a gift. Ebay provides a great resource to find suitable gifts if a personal collection doesn't hold enough firepower.

Nothing negative .... just my thoughts on your post...

  • Thanks Blindflyer! I understand where you're coming from. It was hard for my wife and I to buy anyone anything this year with some last minute financial issues. I guess I would have probably been better off backing out, but I gave my word and tried to compensate. Next year I'm sure I will do better. Thanks! image

Guru, Reading your post on the previous page really got to me. Your name does not have to end in Fogel to have a nice collection. Everybody has different views and different opinions on what are good cards, and what makes a collection valuable. There are guys here who have extraordinary collections worth 10s of thousands of dollars. There are also extraordinary collections that are worth a few hundred dollars. The fact that you gave cards away that were dear to you, speaks volumes. Most of us wouldnt sell the cards that we love, nevermind give them away. PM me your address so I can give you the T-206 you requested in your sig.

I agree - seems pretty shameful to complain about what you received, and look for credit because you sent items that you perceive to be more "valuable". I guess no one ever taught you proper etiquette when it comes to receiving a gift. How sad.

    I will post pictures soon!

I just wanted to thank my not so secret santa for the beautiful Jack Morris rookie card in a PSA 9 holder and for the complete box of 1984 Donruss "postcards" in sealed packs. I do collect 80s cards and this box of Donruss cards was not something I was aware of until now. I am glad to learn about something new that commemorates the players I grew up with.

My brother, a former collector, took a look at my Morris rookie and he was amazed how sharp it was. He collected during pre-PSA era, so he was accustomed to all those off grade cards that people passed off as MINT. I guess grading did a lot of good to those people that were really looking for mint grade cards--grading really defined what MINT was suppose to be. (Maybe I could get him back to collecting after him seeing how PSA really cleaned up the hobby)

Anyway, thank you Bob. You went way beyond what I expected yet followed my wishlist to a T!

Many thanks and wish you a wonderful New Year!

A big thanks to my SS, as the gift was pretty awesome.

4 rack packs of 1987 Topps. I ripped the packs immediatly and pulled the Bonds rookie, and (significant only to a Giants fan like me) a Robby Thompson rookie!

    image

    Next, there was 3 1984 Donruss PSA 8s, 2 HoFers and 1 soon-to-be HoFer....

    image

And, at the bottom of the box, an autographed Willie McCovey "Perez Steele Greatest Moments" card! I've got a growing collection of Giants who played in All Star games, and McCovey is a fine addition to that collection.

If your recipient was happy with what they got, that should be all that matters. Shame on you for calling someone out... it seems like the way you play this game is by comparing value sent versus value received, rather than the spirit of the Holidays.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • I have been away from the computer for the past few days. I would like to say thank you to my secret Santa for my gift. I received a beautiful 1973 Topps Goose Gossage rookie card graded by SGC. This is my first graded card from 1973 Topps. I always loved Goose Gossage. I remember seeing the Yankees play in Ft. Lauderdale during spring training in the late 70s. Gossage was the most intimidating player in the game. However, he was very nice and kind when I meet him. He signed some cards for me and talked to me for a few minutes about the Yankees. My gift brought back some great memories.

    Now, for some random thouhts.

    (1) Bob, I am happy you like my gift. I always enjoyed following your OPC sets, 1976 Topps set and 1978 Topps set. The quality of your sets are amazing. I tried to find some cards/sets that would compliment your collection. I hope some of them were new for you.

    (2) My grandparents and parents instilled in me that it is better to give then receive. As a result, I love the opportunity to give to others. It gives me a great sense of happiness. I think that this inner happiness and the happiness that you can give to others is what is missing from some. I try to live by this in both my professional and personal life. For those who focus on what they receive, need to channel their energy on the giving aspect. In addition, the people who give just so that they can qualify to receive something are also missing the picture. I hope next year, those who participate in the gift exchange will focus on selecting items that mean something to them and want to share it with others. It is also nice to include a note why you selected the items you are giving. This will help create a connection to the gift.

    (3) I have many cards in my collection. However, two of my favorite cards are the Gossage card I received this year and a 1969 Topps Lou Brock (PSA graded) I received last year from my secret Santa. They are special to me because of how I received them.

    (4) I would like to thank Guru for his post. His words and gift were from the heart. I hope the receipent of his gift respects the cards. I know I would.

    (5) I am sorry for Greg (I believe that is your name) who did not receive a gift. I hope it is just late. If you do not receive a gift, then please let me know.

    (6) Brian, I hope your secret Santa contacts you to let you know why he sent you the cards. It may help.

    (7) Joe, I do not understand your post. Are you looking for a pat on the back, embarrass your Santa or something else?

I am already looking forward to next years gift exchange.

That's a great looking McCovey card! As a fellow Giant fan, I'm more than a bit jealous. Some day I'll pick up the Giants from one of those P-Z sets. I can also appreciate the Robby Thompson rookie. He sure was great back in 1993, wasn't he? I always thought he'd be a manager after he retired.

Wow. You're right. Here's a list of all the Florida major leaguers, if anyone's interested. Robby Thompson, Al Rosen, Mike Stanley, Brad Wilkerson and David Eckstein are about as good as it gets.
  • That is great website. It is sad that the greatest "Gator" MLB player never made it to the University. Johnny Damon signed a Letter of Intent and was ready to play for the Gators. However, he was drafted and went to the minor leagues. If you look at the NBA list of Gator players, then that would be even more sad. This upcoming NBA draft will be better for the Gators. I guess it is true that we are a football school.

Ok, look...this is what I dislike about typing stuff on the internet, sometimes things get taken the wrong way. I did not complain about my gift, I was rather trying to say I was happy receiving an appropriate gift...but that receiving one graded common wasn't as thrilling as the effect I got my sending something to someone else. I don't think I could have gotten anything in return that would have made me as excited as I was when I spent several hours picking out items from my small collection to add to a gift. I was not, in any way belittling or criticizing my secret santa's gift. I agree entirely that I worded it wrong in my original statement and am sorry if I offended anybody, most importantly my secret santa. I sincerely meant my holiday regards to each and every one of you and most especially Jami for his prompt and kind emails to set this whole holiday project up. In all truth, book value is a different thing. While the item I sent booked for more, in all truth, if I were to list it as a lot on eBay.....it might not even fetch $25, who knows? I am sorry I worded something wrong and angered some of you as that was simply not my intent. I was happy when I posted my original message, just adding random insight of whatever came up in my head after opening the gift. I am suprised at how many people were so quick to rush judgement on a short message board statement -- it is so hard to accurately portray yourself with short typed messages. I do not post here or anywhere else often, so I credit my failure in that standpoint as an inexperienced member. I am not here to make enemies, the people I have befriended have been fantastic. Please take and ignore my original comments as they seem to be taken out of context. I apologize and I do SINCERELY mean it when I say thank you and happy holidays to all of you and most especially to my gift provider.

Thanks and please understand my inexperienced comments,

Also, if I made another rookie message board mistake, please do not try to analyze what I am saying. I am happy with my gift, happy with giving, happy with the whole gift exchange project -- that's the bottom line to whatever stuff I rambled on about above. Thanks and happy holidays.

  • I am both ecstatic and a little upset with my gift. I'll explain.

My SS sent me 8 PSA graded 1910 T218 Champions boxer cards, including Jim Jeffries who is a HOFer and one of the great boxers in the history of the sport. The cards were in fantastic condition with bright colors, great centering and many having extraordinary corners and edges, especially when you consider their age. They truly are beautiful examples of one of the nicest looking sets ever produced in sports cards. Ironically, the very first boxing card I ever purchased came from this set as well so they have even more significance to me.

Added to this, my SS sent these from what I can only assume was their personal collection (they have the #1 ranked set on the registry) so the fact that the cards came from someone who hand picked them out for THEMSELVES originally makes them ever more special to me. While the "price/value" has little significance to me, for the record the total value would FAR exceed (and I mean FAR EXCEED) the parameters set forth by the originator of the thread. So much so, that I actually felt guilty that I wasn't able to send more to my recipient. For the record though, my SS's generosity has augmented a sense of "paying it forward" that I feel already existed strongly in me. To say that I was blown away would be a great understatement. Never in my wildest imagination did I even consider the possibility of receiving a gift as great as I did. These cards have become permanent fixtures to my collection and I will always remember the enormous generosity from which they came. Now, the reason why I'm a little upset ...

The cards are so fantastic that now I'm going to have to try and finish this set. image

I know these are supposed to be secret Santas but I feel that I should publicly acknowledge an outstanding board member who I had previously not dealt with personally. Griffins, you sir, are THE MAN. If you ever need an organ donor, be it brain or liver (although I can not guarantee the condition of either) just let me know. In all seriousness, thank you very much Griffins.

I hope the holidays were safe and happy for everyone here and all their families.

    Arthur

PS. I currently don't have a scanner but as soon as I do I'll post pics. Also, Griffins, don't blame me if we find ourselves in a future bidding war for a key card to the set. You brought this upon yourself. image

    Thanks again. image

I like the idea of writing a card with the gift so one can explain why it was picked out for them. I wrote a card to my recipient for that reason.

I was quite happy with what I picked out. The only thing I would change next year is pay close attention to getting it in on time. Sometimes that is out of our control if we cannot rely on something from our personal collection and have to do some shopping and depend on shipping from that end. I expanded my personal collection before being able to put the gifts together.

<< <i>I am both ecstatic and a little upset with my gift.

That's awesome, I don't think I would know what to buy if it came to having to purchase a boxing gift. I think the only boxing stuff I have is of Max Schmeling and Joe Frazier. I guess I would have to search eBay to find something appropriate. Awesome stuff. Happy holidays!

DeutscherGeist blew me right out of the water. I received two gift wrapped packages and a card filled to the capacity with a note about how and why each gift was purchased. Immediately that card became the best gift that anybody could send

    Inside the packages?

One unopened 24 pack box of 2006 Topps Heritage to compliment the master set that I have. (Will stay unopened)

One unopened 8 pack box of 2006 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects (Which will be torn upen soon image )

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)
