  • Wow, I like these '86s. I never really looked at these before in detail. Nice cards. I didn't get much in the pack aside from the Courtnall rookie. Couple of nicely centered commons, but lots of the cards had this little bubble on the surface of the card. Strange.

    image

....rest of the pack goes like this....

    Rick Vaive - Mapleleafs
    Patrick Flatley - Islanders
    Mike O'Connell - Red Wings
    John Anderson - Whalers
    Ray Neufeld - Jets
    Pittsburgh Sticker #53
    Dave Babych - Whalers
    Mark Napier - Oilers
    Jim Peplinski - Flames
    Perry Turnbull - Jets
    Brian Mullen - Jets
    Brian Engblom - Sabres

......hope to light the lamp with the '85s next week!

Nice cards Arny. Did some early ripping myself. I really like
the card design too. Sharp photos. Nice color schemes. So far
I've had three Doug Gilmours' out of four packs. Strange but true.

Got mostly commons again with a few stars (Dionne, Gilmour, Hawerchuck). Had to show the sharp looking Devil's and Canucks uniforms. Looking forward to the 'big '85 year' rip next week!

    Regards,

    Rich

  • Looks like we got some nicely centered cards. Seems Topps was on top of their game in '86. Gum in wrappers, few oc's and hardly a miscut.

    1986 Topps pack 1:

Decent stars with great condition throughout the pack. OPC like rough cut on top edge of Messier!?!

    66 Mike Ridley - Rangers
    144 Randy Carlisle - Jets
    67 John Tucker - Sabres
    186 Mark Messier - Oilers
    127 Mike Foligno - Sabres
    20 Peter Stastny - Nordiques
    40 Brian Engblom - Sabres
    38 Brian Mullen - Jets
    Sticker #25 Hartford Whalers Logo
    193 Mike Krushelnyski - Oilers
    161 Mats Naslund - Canadiens
    47 Clint Malarchuk - Nordiques
    159 Bernie Nicholls - Kings
    160 Ray Ferraro - Whalers
    188 Bobby Smith - Canadiens
    133 Mike Liut - Whalers

    image

    1986 Topps Pack 2:

Not much star power but great condition throughout. Love the planet Al and the Pederson. The Pederson card brings a smile to my face because it signifies the arrival of Cam Neely to the B's!

    162 Patrick Flatley - Islanders
87 John Ogrodnick - Red Wings
    156 Patrik Sundstrom - Canucks

  • Anyone else absolutely FALLING IN LOVE with hockey cards?

I simply didn't really collect them as a kid (and was collecting 80's baseball and football instead) and going back now has been an absolute delight....

This bust has been so much fun ...

.. I'll post my bust later today.

PS Great scans on the '86 so far guys ... keep em coming!

Agreed, best quality control so far as to centering.
    Great colors too.

Way to pick out the 'centered' box Bob.

Cool shot of Messier. I have this set (raw) but I've never seen the all-star stickers before. Good stuff.
  • Here are the cards from my '86-87 pack:

Scored another Ciccarelli and the condition of the cards overall was stellar. Overall happy, though thus far I have let to really land much in the star department. Can't wait for the '85's next week!!!!!!

The cards in my pack all had sharp corners and solid centering. No big name rookies but a host of Hall of Famers. Too bad Barry Pederson was not Patrick Roy as it looks like Pederson has come out of a few packs. Has anybody pulled a Roy?

  • I feel guilty.

Here are the best of my 1987 cards.

    image

Overall the two packs were great. The cards were mostly centered. I was very happy with them.

Now, for the reason why I feel guilty. Here are the results from my 2 1986 packs:

    image
    image

I really like the design of the 1986 set. So far, I am going to work on the 1987 and 1986 sets. Depending on how the other rips go, I may also want to work on some of those sets.

    David
  • I really like the '86 set now. I have a good way of you getting rid of your guilt...just send one of those Roy's to me image

Unbelievable. Don't feel guilty someone has to get them.

Congrats and thanks for sharing, Bob C.

Edit: Without going over the Roy's with a 10x loupe they look like at least a pair of 9s from here. I hope you get two 10s if you send them in! image

  • I always enjoyed Hockey cards. During my first go at collecting (1978 - 1990) I enjoyed collecting the 1979-80 OPC set. I really liked the set. However, it took me three tries before I got a real Gretzky. The first two were fakes. I had to sold the set with the rest of my collection to pay for college. I started collecting again in 2000. I have been focusing on Baseball with a little Basketball mixed in for fun. However, I have been looking for a fun Hockey set to work on. This pack rip has been a fun opportunity to see what sets I want to work on. So far I like the 1986 and 1987 design the best with the 1986 being the nicer of the two. Unless I like one of the earlier designs better, I will work on the 1986 set.

ArnyVee: I do not feel that guilty.image

Bob: Thanks. The '87 Lemieux is really nice. It is a strong PSA 9 with a chance at a 10. The '86 Roy cards are really nice. Using a 10x one is a high-end 8 or weak 9 (depends on the grader). The other is a strong 9 with a chance at a 10.

Blindflyer and Knuckles: Thanks. I was excited when I opened the first pack and stunned when I opened the second pack.

    David
  • David,

    Bob
  • OK...so the Roy's got me excited to participate. Any talk of doing another one of these rips except with OPC? If so, I'd be in!
  • I'm definitely in for another ...

OPC might not be worth it .... for one thing, there's more cards per set so there's less of a chance per pack for a big pull. At the extra cost per participant, not sure if we'd get enough bang for our buck on it.

that said, Topps or OPC, I'm definitely in for another.

    image

1st price is PSA 9, 2nd price is (PSA 10).
Cards with an * were not in SMR but are worthy of mentioning.
The price for these cards is Beckett high.

Note: Beckett Hi seems to be half price of SMR on PSA 9.

    1985 Topps

    9 Mario Lemieux RC $135. ($700.)
    29 Steve Yzerman $25. ($100.)
    120 Wayne Gretzky $30. ($200.)
    *34 Kevin Dineen RC $3.00
    *40 Ray Bourque $4.00
    *76 Doug Gilmour $6.00
    *84 Kirk Mueller RC $2.50
    *110 Pelle Lindbergh $10.00
    *122 Kelly Hrudey RC $3.00
    *123 Tomas Sandstrum RC $3.00

I was up for the 85's till I scanned this pack...anyone else not too thrilled with the looks of theirs? Maybe I just got a couple ugly wraps???

Best of luck to all rippers tomorrow. May you all pull a Lemieux, Gretzky AND Yzerman.

    Thanks, Bob C.

  • I opened my two packs. The centereing and corners were tough on this one. The good news is I pulled 2 of the big 3. The bad news is the centering. Between the 1986 and 1985, I think I have used up my good karma. Here are the scans of the best cards.

  • Alright David!

I think you should make an appointment with a proctologist to get that horseshoe removed! image

The Lemieux should still pull a nice piece of change if you sell it raw. It is pack fresh after all! Tough break on the centering, especially on the Gretzky.

I feel better about the packs now seeing your results.

My '85-86 pack can't even hold a candle to packman's ... it's almost embarrassing following it ..... but hey, at least I got two gradeable cards out of it. Overall the pack had some pretty heavy gum damage and a lot of centering problems....

    Here are the full results:
    - Scott Stevens, Caps [psa worthy]
    - Doug Wilson, Blackhawks [psa worthy]
    - Tomas Sandstrom, Rangers - RC
    - Brent Sutter, Isles
    - Mark Johnson, Blues
    - Brian Engblom, Kings
    - Dwight Foster, Wings
    - Mark Howe, Flyers
    - John Tonelli, Isles
    - Mark Fusco, Whale [obliterated by gum]

I still love this set. The design is great and a great selection of stars.

Good luck to the rest of the rippers --- hopefully I got the only bad pack in the bunch!

Just commons here, does it seem that the stock on this year is thinner than the other years we've opened?

    The rest:
    P. Flatley, Islanders
    G. Hanlon, Rangers
    P. Russell, Devils-nice card, a little oc t/b
    D. Beaupre-Northstars
    M. Bridgeman, Devils
    W. Babych, Pens
    A. Haworth, Caps
    J. Tonelli, Islanders, bad factory ding left side
    Middleton, B's wax stain

    Did I leave anything out?
  • For once, I have packman beat image

    image

Lemieux and Gretz were next to each other in the pack.

    Also:
Moog / Oilers - gum stain
    Resch / Devlis
    Gare / Red Wings
    Rogers / Rangers
    Kasper / Bruins
    Lemelin / Flames
    Naslund / Canadiens
    Tanti / Canucks
Savard / Blackhawks - wax stain
  • Wow. Great looking cards. My Lemieux and Gretzky were also next to each other. Those are great pulls. How was the centering of the other cards. I found that the centering of the 85's in general was very poor compared to the 86-89 packs.

    David
  • Six cards were way OC to the left. The three HOF'ers in my scan are slightly OC to the top, and the Naslund, Savard and Resch were pretty near perfect.
  • Very nice Michael! Very nice. image

Decent pack for me. Thin stock as previously suggested meant several of mine were badly warped though.

    Steve Larmer
    Phil Russell
    Phil Housley
    Bernie Nicholls
    Pat Flatley
    Rick Middleton
    Joe Mullen
    Brad McCrimmon
    Barry Pederson
    Paul MacLean
    Brent Peterson

    Eyebone
"I'm not saying I'm the best manager in the world, but I'm in the top one." Brian Clough
  • Familar rip here as well

    Mario Lemieux
    Wayne Gretzky
    Wayne Babich
    Alan Haworth
    Don Beaupre
    Mel Bridgman
    Stan Smyl
    Steve Larmer
    Gil Perreault
    Dennis Savard
    Glenn Resch
    Mats Naslund

Most cards have some centering issues, Mario is probably 55 45 lr and 65 35 tb.
Gretzky is better tb but worse lr.

Savard and Resch cards are both centered nicely both lr and tb.

Thanks again Bob for putting this together.

    Peace

  • Nothing of note for my '85s....but, this set seems like it would be great fun to build. Tom, if you want my '85s let me know. There are probably only a couple that would grade as a "9" from the pack though.

    image

    ...the rest goes like this...

    Tom Barrasso
    Mark Johnson
    Tim Bothwell
    Don Maloney
    Greg Malone
    Craig Redmond
Tony McKegney (totally warped from the gum)
    Pelle Lindbergh A.S. Sticker
    Rick Vaive
    Dave Babych
    Mike Liut

.....the '85 and '86 sets would definitely be first on my list if I went that way! image

Cards with an * were not in SMR but are worthy of mentioning.
The price for these cards is Beckett high.

Note: Beckett Hi seems to be half price of SMR on PSA 9.

    49 Steve Yzerman RC $55. ($325.)
    51 Wayne Gretzky $20. ($175.)
