While I admittedly don't collect hockey cards or know even the most elementary information about them I am oddly curious to do a forum rip. Would somebody be kind enough to give me the nickel version of 80s hockey? What would I be looking for ... what are the best packs to open ... etc. I would greatly appreciate it.

'80s hockey is where it's at, baby! Granted, since this will be a Topps rip there are a lot of missing names that would otherwise be found in OPC. Nonetheless, the following rookies can be found in these packs:

Ray Bourque 1980
Jari Kurri 1981
Ron Francis 1982
Scott Stevens 1983
Steve Yzerman 1984
Mario Lemieux 1985
Patrick Roy 1986
Luc Robitaille 1987
Brett Hull 1988
Joe Sakic 1989

This is far from exhaustive. There are also all the other major stars from the decade and there are a lot of Gretzky cards in the 1980-1983 run.

Chances of pulling a 85-86 Lemieux are pretty good too since it was a DP. A really good box would yield 4 of them.

Hockey may be the best sport to do a wax run from the 80's-lots of RC's , smaller set size, and those Gretzky's !

I know that I've never opened any hockey packs for the '80s aside from a pack of '84s that I picked up years ago. How much more would the OPC boxes make the cost go up? Aren't they valued higher than the Topps for the '80s?

MUCH higher. Plus, it would be hard to find a box of some of the OPCs- let alone from a dealer you'd trust.

A few examples-

a 1980 OPC box would be close to $2000.
a 1985 OPC box would be about the same.
A 1984 OPC box is at LEAST $600 (vs about $140-150 for a Topps)


Alas, unless you get a bunch of hockey guys together similar to those of the '75 Topps case at $25,000, Topps is probably the most economical way to go. Frankly, I doubt it would happen with the OPCs.

Wow, big difference. Are the late '80s a big difference in price where we could possibly swap out the Topps for OPC boxes as we are doing for the '82-83 box? Let's try and get the most bang for our puck...err..I mean buck.

The football rip has been a blast. $80.00 to rip 10 packs with chances at the biggest RC's in modern hockey (minus Sir Wayne) is money well spent IMHO. Heck, it's less than 2 cartons of smokes here in Beantown! It's less than dinner for you and your best girl! It's less than your Saturday night bar tab! Think of the crap you blow $80.00 bucks on! Come on!

Info for everyone:

$80.00 is an estimate but I promise to keep the price as low as possible without spending too much out of pocket.

The idea of the rip was an 80's Topps run when I fell into it. Of course there weren't Topps issues in 82 & 83. Steve hunted down an 82 opc box for us and he had an 83 opc to complete the 10 years.

I wouldn't want to change the other Topps boxes to OPC as cost will be prohibitive and Steve has been nice enough to hold these boxes (and honor his quoted price) from about 7 weeks ago. I don't think we should change things up at this point. Also IIRC, in 89 the Topps issue is better than OPC as the OPC presses ran non stop that year.

The 2 opc issues do have 48 packs per box. I brought this up in the Football thread when I first found out from Steve. There will be 12 82 opc packs and 12 83 opc packs extra. I haven't quite figured out how to divide these up among 36 participants yet.

The only suggestions I've had from the boards is "I'll take 'em!"

I'm open to suggestions on this issue. What does everyone want to do with them.

My best idea so far is to sell them on eBay to defray cost per person. The only problem with this is I would have to list them all once product is here. Which means everyone will have already paid. Not to mention time and related costs....listing fees, FVF, Paypal fees, shipping time and cost, Paypal fees upon reimbursements to participants etc. Which actually makes this not such a great idea.

Again lets decide as a group what to do with them.

Sadly enough, if response doesn't pick up soon I'll probably let Steve know we won't be buying the boxes.

This might be unfair and out of nowhere but ...

Since you're trying to wrangle people to do this why not just do a first-come-first-serve basis? The first 28 people to sign up get the extra pack? If nothing else it will ease your corse to 28 members. Heck, there might even be some people already signed up that are willing to forfeit the extra pack just to complete the deal.

Funny that you mentioned that Arthur, I was going to suggest that the extra packs are given to the first 24 members (not two for multi-lot purchases) to sign up. This way, we get to a nice number quickly!

I might purchase two lots if we get really close and can't seal the deal. Come on you hockey guys, jump in!

Update: Friday 09-15-06 4:18 PM EST...

Looks like we have 12 slots left. Steve Hart has sent me a total for the boxes delivered here to Boston. I'll add the Paypal fees and shipping fees and post a cost per "slot" later tonight.

I've had numerous suggestions on the extra 24 packs. A very good friend of mine had the best suggestion yet and I'm 1000% sure everyone will love it. I have to work the math but I'll fill everyone in soon. A vote won't be needed as this is clearly the way to go. Details here soon.

Hopefully we can fill the last slots over the weekend and get the payment part going by Monday. Maybe by the22nd the boxes will be on the way here and I can get them divided up and shipped out by the end of the month.

We may not be able to rip on opening night NHL 2006-07 but we may be ripping by Oct. 7th!

OK guys........I did the baseball, the 1975 Topps wax case, missed the football, but count me in for hockey. The 82 and 83 OPC packs that come in 48 packs, I would be happy to purchase the extra packs at fair market price.

Didn't mean any offense. I certainly didn't think that you were going to have a problem filling the slots. I only offered that suggestion as a way to expedite the process since I know how itchy it can get when the prospect of ripping great wax is out there.
