Since I'm leaving for vacation Sunday morning, I'm going to have to rip my '89 pack this morning! (Darn )
Here's the best of the pack (I'm going by name recognition here)...looks like some decent centering on the first two.....
...the rest of the pack goes like this....
Walt Poddubny - Devils Jeff Brown - Nordiques Randy Burridge - Bruins Dave Volek - Islanders Canadiens Sticker Glen Hanlon - Red Wings Bobby Smith - Canadiens Bernie Federko - Red Wings Peter Zezel - Blues Ken Linseman - Bruins
....this is already starting to be fun! Keep those 'intro' posts coming Bob! Those are great!

My first 89 pack yielded decent results. Centering in this pack is typical of 1989 Topps Hockey - most cards seem to be at least a little off-center top to bottom, and the occassional diamond-cut.
In addition to the Leetch card, this pack contained 3 HOFers: Langway, Hawerchuck, and LaFontaine.
I'll probably submit the Leetch and Langway for grading to add to my set - I think both could come back 9s. None of the commons are centered well-enough to send to PSA.
The rest of the cards in my first pack:
82 Steve Thomas 40 Rejean Lemelin 148 Paul Reinhart 75 Lee Norwood North Stars sticker 2 Ulf Dahlen 181 Brent Ashton 158 Charlie Huddy 11 Peter Sidorkiewicz 80 Rick Tocchet
I can already tell that I'm going to really enjoy this hockey bust. I became a pretty big hockey fan while living in Minneapolis and following the North Stars in the late '80's. By '89, I'd switched allegiences and became a big Sabres fan. LaFontaine and Mogilny were my two fav players. I even got TTM autos from each if I recall. All that said, I never really got many hockey cards -- so many of these packs will be a first for me. Today, I'm actually more of a hockey fan than I ever was as a kid, and consider it my favorite sport. I'm really looking forward to this rip!
My first pack: - Ray Bourque (HOF) - Guy LaFleur (HOF) - Sylvain Cote, Whalers - Tomas Sandsrom, Rangers - Andrew McBain, Pens - Mike McPhee, Candadiens - Pierre Turgeon, Sabres - Alain Chevrier, Blackhawks - Marc Habscheid, Red Wings - Stephen Leach, Caps - Tony McKegney, Red Wings - Tom Laidlaw, Kings - Scott Arniel, Sabres - Detroit Red Wings *sticker*

Okay my first pack wasn't too bad...decent centering throughout side to side but many singles oc t/b all have very sharp corners. The Lemieux is a little off t/b but the Murphy is pretty sweet.

My second pack is probably the best pack I've ever opened in my life (star wise). It was absolutely loaded! All that was missing was a pair of Sakic's. A lot of oc's in this pack too but the Ramsey is pretty sweet along with the rest of the stars except for the one Roy.
11 Peter Sidorkiewicz - Whalers 80 Rick Tocchet - Flyers 122 Dale Hawerchuk - Jets 159 Dave Christian - Capitals 61 Kirk McLean - Canucks 17 Patrick Roy - Canadiens Sticker #19 Winnipeg Jets 15 Cam Neely - Bruins 61 Kirk McLean - Canucks 17 Patrick Roy - Canadiens 156 Wayne Gretzky - Kings 140 Mike Ramsey - Sabres 43 Jarri Kurri - Oilers 137 Greg Millen - Blues
Nice start. Can't wait to see how everyone else makes out.

I've opened my 2nd and 3rd packs now. Pack #2 has no really big names, but I'm surprised at how many of the names I still remember watching play - Kaspar, Janney, Turgeon, Bodger, etc. Overall, centering is much better in this pack than the first pack.
157 Steve Tuttle 194 Steve Kaspar 190 Craig Janney 25 Pierre Turgeon 70 Ray Ferraro 84 Mike McPhee 38 Andrew McBain 44 Murray Craven 176 Gino Cavallini Capitals Sticker 79 Al Iafrate 26 Bob Rouse 154 Doug Bodger 31 Darren Pang
Pack #3 is a lot like pack #2 - no big stars, but several nicely centered commons. Contents:

Pete - I'm guessing you've had a few of the 89's graded before for your set. If so, how is PSA on the print dots? The one above Leetch's head in your scan and the one on the bottom blue border of the Gretzky in my scan for examples. Do they PD these cards?
Well nothing worth scanning in pack #1. Sharp corners and edges, but everything OC low and to the left.
#9 Tom Kurvers #20 Keving Dineen #29 Andy Brickley #33 Petri Skriko #58 Dave Taylor #78 Mike Foligno #100 Kjell Samuelsson #102 John McLean #131 Kelly Miller #177 Brian Bellows #182 Gerald Diduck #192 Grant Fuhr - snow on picture #195 Pete Peeters
I'm not sure how PSA will deal with the print dots on the 89s. I've actually never submitted a card newer than 1981 to PSA. My 73 Topps set has unqualified 9s and even 10s with much worse dots, but I don't know how much tougher they'll be on the 89s. The majority of my post-1981 hockey cards are still raw.
My plan for the 1984-present Topps sets has been to grade as many of the cards myself as I can, but sometimes I pick up a few cards on eBay when I can get them cheap enough. Occasionaly, 4SC will be selling 9s and even an occasional 10 for less than my grading fee. Right now, 4SC has listed on eBay a group lot of six 89 Topps cards - Roy, Yzerman, LaFleur, Bourque, Federki, Nieuwendyk - for an opening bid that will cost less than $3 each including shipping.

I can send somebody a pic of the Sakic tomorrow if they want to put it up
I haven't heard of any of the guys I pulled in this pack plus not one of the cards have been graded in the pop report. This is truely a pack of commons. If anyone wants to see any of them I'll gladly scan them, just reply.

Hi Hockey rippers, I'm new here. Thanks to Bob for organizing the rip fest and the first rate packaging he and his son did on the shipping of the packs. Here's what I got in my '89 pack:
C. Simpson D. Gilmour M. Gartner G. Carbonneau P. LaFontaine B. Joyce S. Burr Checklist # 198 G. Stefan C. Wilson C. Ronning S. Kasper S. Tuttle
I like the card design with the left and right edges having a iced look to them. I'm going to try to post a scan of the top players. I hope this works....
Best thing to do is to upload the pics to a server somewhere (photobucket.com works great for this). Once they're uploaded, just note the link for each one and reference it when you reply (by clicking on the "image" icon and then inserting the url for that image).
I know there's a complete tutorial within this board if you do a search ... but hopefully my comments helped.

I know the Niners logo is out of place appearing in a hockey thread but I'm a huge Pro Football fan and collector first and foremost. Hockey is cool too. I like the vintage cards all the way up to 1990's issues.
Hey Phreaky, I've sold you a few '72 Hockey PSA 9's in the past. It's always been a pleasure doing business with you.
Open an account at photobucket.com. It's free. Then Upload your pics. Copy the URL then when you post here click the 3rd box in from the left above. (The one that looks like a mountain in a picture frame). A pop up box will allow you to paste in the URL and viola! You can post a pic.
my 89's didnt yield any big stars but still fun ripping. bob thanks again for organizing this. verbeek hextall tim kerr bernie nicholls bernie federko paul coffey peter stastny dino ciccarelli guy carboneau who's working on this set so i can send you my cards?
My pack was so-so. Did pull a nice Brett Hull and the sticker was a nice Patrick Roy.
Several were O/C top to bottom as others mentioned. The rest of my cards were: Kirk Muller Dan Quinn Brian Lawton John Cullen Aaron Broten Phil Housley Marc Habscheid Tomas Sandstrom Tim Kerr Dave Manson Bernie Nicholls Mike Bullard
Looking forward to the next rip.

Most of the cards from my 2 packs were off center T/B. However, the corner, edges and surfaces were great. It was a lot of fun. The following cards were the best in the 2 packs:
My 4 packs of 1988 Topps didn't yield many star cards - just Bourque and Roy. The centering on the commons was all over the place, but there's 7 out of 46 commons that might grade out at PSA 9-10.
The stickers in these packs were much nicer! The first pack yielded an Oilers team logo sticker, but the last 3 packs yielded these 3 All-Star stickers:
Much better centering than the '89's, less corner dings too. The Roy however has a tiny top left ding-these are some of the best. The rest: S. Stevens, Caps G. Anderson, Oilers D. Hunter, Penguins M. O'Connell, Wings U. Dahlen, Rangers G. Hanlon, Wings M. Bullard, Flames S. Mellanby, Flyers caps logo sticker
Nice stuff guys. Seems like 88 was heavy on miscuts or tilts/diamond cuts.
88 Topps Pack 1:
128 Brent Ashton - Jets 22 Peter Stastny - Nordiques 51 Darren Pahg - Blackhawks 5 Stephane Richer - Canadiens 149 Gino Cavallini - Blues 58 Cam Neely - Bruins Sticker #15 Red Wings Logo 49 Chris Chelios Canadiens 194 Pierre Turgeon - Sabres 25 Clint Malarchuk - Capitals 61 Bob Brooke - North Stars 104 Mike Ridley - Capitals 54 Michel Goulet - Nordiques
The Neely is a mess, the Turgeon & Goulet have a shot at 9's and the Chelly looks perfect....dare I say 10? The rest of the cards are either perfectly centered or very tilted.
88 Topps Pack 2:
65 Dale Hawerchuk - Jets 66 Brett Hull - Blues 182 Steve Duchesne - Kings 39 John Chabot - Red Wings 73 Ray Bourque - Bruins 86 Kevin Hatcher - Capitals Sticker #9 Cam Neely All Star 147 Jari Kurri - Oilers 195 Brian Hayward - Canadiens 109 Rob Brown - Penguins 140 Randy Wood - Islanders 75 Carey Wilson - Whalers 42 Don Beaupre - North Stars
The Hull RC is way OC, the Kurri has a big ding top left and the others all seem a little crooked to me.
Brendan Shanahan Brett Hull Ray Ferraro Kevin Hatcher Joe Cirella Gord Kluzak Dirk Graham Dave Tippett Larry Murphy Tony Tanti Sean Burke Dale Hawerchuk Hakan Loob Sticker
Some nicely centered, unfortunately not the Shanahan or Hull
191 Patrick Flatley 131 Alan Haworth 96 Doug Bodger 91 Brian Mullen 114 Ray Ferraro 86 Kevin Hatcher 29 Pat Verbeek 65 Dale Hawerchuck 10 Brad McCrimmon - Sticker

I like the card design with the left and right edges
having a iced look to them. I'm going to try to post
a scan of the top players. I hope this works....
Rich
I'd love to get any and all Pat LaFontaine's ..... if you pull one, please let me know what you'd want for it!
Thanks,
Tom

me a quick pointer on how to attach a scan of the cards
I got? Thanks!!

<< <i>I like the card design with the left and right edges

Wow, I never recognized that as an attempt to look icy
Thanks Blindflyer,
I had the scans on my computer. Hopefully
this time it works. If not I'll read the CU instructions
on how to post them.
Regards,
Rich
You'll need to "upload" them from your computer to some location.
Set up an account at photobucket. It's probably the easiest way.
Also, in your account options for this forum, turn "on" your "Private Message" feature so we can chat offline if you need more help.

I know the Niners logo is out of place appearing in
a hockey thread but I'm a huge Pro Football fan and
collector first and foremost. Hockey is cool too. I like the
vintage cards all the way up to 1990's issues.
Hey Phreaky, I've sold you a few '72 Hockey PSA 9's in the past.
It's always been a pleasure doing business with you.

I'm looking for right-handed catching goalies cards and the stickers.

I'm glad you made it to the rip.
Open an account at photobucket.com.
It's free. Then Upload your pics. Copy the URL then when you post here click the 3rd box in from the left above. (The one that looks like a mountain in a picture frame). A pop up box will allow you to paste in the URL and viola! You can post a pic.
Here's Albie's Sakic: Looks like a solid 9 to me.
Thanks, Bob C.

1988 Topps Hockey rip!
1988 Topps
1st price is PSA 9, 2nd price is (PSA 10).
Cards with an * were not in SMR but are worthy of mentioning.
The price for these cards is Beckett high.
Note: Beckett Hi seems to be half price of SMR on PSA 9.
1 Mario Lemieux $15. ($100.)
16 Joe Nieuwendyke RC $10. ($60.)
66 Brett Hull RC $30. ($150.)
120 Wayne Gretzky $25. ($140.)
122 Brendan Shanahan RC $25. ($140)
*94 Sean Burke RC $3.00
*116 Patrick Roy $4.00
*181 Bob Probert RC $1.50
*194 Pierre Turgeon RC $10.00
*196 Steve Yzerman $3.00
*Shanny just picked up his 600th goal at the start of the season.
His RC should see a small increase.
Best of luck to all you rippers tomorrow.
I hope everyone pulls a gem Lemieux, Gretzky, Hull or Shanny!
Thanks, Bob C.

The stickers in these packs were much nicer! The first pack yielded an Oilers team logo sticker, but the last 3 packs yielded these 3 All-Star stickers:
The rest:
S. Stevens, Caps
G. Anderson, Oilers
D. Hunter, Penguins
M. O'Connell, Wings
U. Dahlen, Rangers
G. Hanlon, Wings
M. Bullard, Flames
S. Mellanby, Flyers
caps logo sticker
Now collecting:
Topps Heritage
1957 Topps BB Ex+-NM
All Yaz Items 7+
Various Red Sox
Did I leave anything out?
88 Topps Pack 1:
128 Brent Ashton - Jets
22 Peter Stastny - Nordiques
51 Darren Pahg - Blackhawks
5 Stephane Richer - Canadiens
149 Gino Cavallini - Blues
58 Cam Neely - Bruins
Sticker #15 Red Wings Logo
49 Chris Chelios Canadiens
194 Pierre Turgeon - Sabres
25 Clint Malarchuk - Capitals
61 Bob Brooke - North Stars
104 Mike Ridley - Capitals
54 Michel Goulet - Nordiques
The Neely is a mess, the Turgeon & Goulet have a shot at 9's and the Chelly looks perfect....dare I say 10? The rest of the cards are either perfectly centered or very tilted.
88 Topps Pack 2:
65 Dale Hawerchuk - Jets
66 Brett Hull - Blues
182 Steve Duchesne - Kings
39 John Chabot - Red Wings
73 Ray Bourque - Bruins
86 Kevin Hatcher - Capitals
Sticker #9 Cam Neely All Star
147 Jari Kurri - Oilers
195 Brian Hayward - Canadiens
109 Rob Brown - Penguins
140 Randy Wood - Islanders
75 Carey Wilson - Whalers
42 Don Beaupre - North Stars
The Hull RC is way OC, the Kurri has a big ding top left and the others all seem a little crooked to me.
Overall happy with the rip this week.
Thanks, Bob C.
