"Does anyone care about Morgans?"

RYKRYK Posts: 35,799 ✭✭✭✭✭
"They were ICY cold at the show. " so says Legend in her latest market report.

I know I don't care about Morgans, but it could not be good for the coin market if one of its staples is "icy cold".

I don't mean this to sound like a dig to the modern crowd (really Russ- I mean it), but I think that the clock is moving backward in strong numismatic hands. I think besides gold, which will always be strong, the older series- trade, bust FH will take the center stage for the next decade or so. I think that as more baby boomer money comes to play, my theory will be more evident.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

Morgans are a good series. There is smoething for everybody, from lower graded stuff up to six figure coins. Plus, there are more and more of them with fancy colors all the time.
  • What price range are we talking about? Laura's inventory and clients are on the upper end. Maybe when you get to that range the quest for new material is really starting to become apparent. I had fun this weekend buying BLAST white Morgans with great cartwheel. I haven't heard blast white and cartwheel mentioned in a couple years. It's all tone, tone, tone. I remember going on Albaneese and Ellesmere websites among others and always finding Morgans with blast white in the description. Not so much anymore if at all. Is there anybody out there who still looks for blast white Morgans with cartwheel? After starring at nothing but toned Morgans for the past 2 years it was a nice relief!!!!

No. Especially those silly varieties. Personally, I'm selling off all of mine and getting in early on those state quarter errors that are so hot right now. image

Oh yeah, and a gold buffalo or two. First strikes, of course.

It looks like Proof Gold was the only thing hot at the Baltimore Show other than the weather. Morgans must be a West Coast item.

Even Morgan's in GSA holders have softened in price . image

IOO.OOO 's of thousands wre released in bags beginning in 1962, and more in the GSA releases.

After everyone goes to a show a few times, and ALL the dealer cases are so full of individual Morgans--I think these should

still be sold in 1000 coin bags--I'm surprised anyone is even remotely interested. There are almost more interesting different-

colored tiles on the floor of the bathrooms. -- BUT!!

Of coarse ther are maybe 50 or so types that are extreemly rare and beautiful---ever seen a PR-68 DeepCameo, the

finest brach mint "proof' special presentations, how about the most beautifully toned MS68 Morgan--sold at the last

Balitimore show if you like artistic colors. And then there'sa me---I have an AU set, 91 of 97 came from circulation at a cost of a dollar---Now that was fun!

The Morgan dollars are about the only thing that I have been buying lately.

PL, DMPL and nice toners. I wouldn't mind seeing the prices soften a little on these. I don't think they will. Not on the higher end stuff.

About the gold Buffs. The only way I will ever own one is if it is given to me. Don't see that happening either.

Intresting comments and I as well seem to see a bit of slowing in morgans in general, there still is and always will be those special coins that always do well, wether it be the great toners, super high end MS graded, DMPL's, VAMS, the better dated CC like the 79-cc, etc. I have had to back up my buying prices on the typical encountered examples, becuase they have been getting tougher to move.

I do agree with Jrocco, that I have seen a migration back to earlier type and earlier keydates and rarities. I think collectors have started to realize that a lot of those psuedo key-dates are not really rare, just high in price from strong demand. Many of these dates in all sereis are continuing to come available and in large groups at times. Did anyone catch the number of 93-s morgans that have been avaialble for sell either on dealers web sites or auctions. In fact , look at the latest ANA denver sale and count the number of 93-s just in AU??

As someone who looks at practically every Morgan offered in major public auctions and in dealer inventories, I know a big problem is quality. The best stuff is off the market and I am seeing the same material over and over usually not selling because of aggressive reserves. The market has been saturated by toned pieces of wide breadth of quality and many slabbed of questionable originality. They are due for a good and healthy correction. Gold is also in the spotlight and there are no phenomenal Morgan collections up for sale. There still is a huge and diverse collector following. I thik it will pick up at Denver but as long as spot gold is high, gold coins will be hot. We might not see things go one way or the other markedly until around FUN in January. It really depends on what comes to market that is noteworthy.

can someone pick up the ball and do a early morning post and say what were allowed to talk about on this board anymore

I guessing buffalos are out for good

and now morgans are annoying people

answering the thread "icy Now" is just that ,........could change twice by year end, also, The summer baltimore show with current conditions ( gas prices in the NE Corridor / Vacations ) is not the most solid benchmark of the overall current market IMO

Morgan Dollars have their place, but I've only been luke warm about them at most as a collector. I started a "one a year" set a couple of times, but then lost interest in it and sold the coins.

I have built three sets for various collectors over the years. As a dealer I stock them, but I too have noticed a lack of interest in them at recent shows. I did not buy a single Morgan Dollar at the most recent Baltimore show, which was a record for me. One guy gave me a want list to upgrade his 1889-CC, but I did not see anything that worked.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I have taken a look at my regular morgans since I started collecting pl and dmpl morgans, and they look blah compared to the prooflikes. I think the pl and dmpl will always at least hold value, the common dates are hard to sell unless they are pq, because they are, eh, common. Besides, if 240 million can be melted (or whatever it was) and still have plenty of many left, they market is probably easy to saturate with average stuff.

Now is exactly the time to buy your more expensive LOW POP DMPL Morgans. Sure a boat-load of AU 93-s Morgans are going to continue to come to market as the baby boomers start to sell off their collections. But, how many more blast white Carson City MS66DMPLs do you think will pop out of the woodwork??? A few for sure, but definitely not a significant amount. And, if Laura keeps discounting her amazingly beautiful high-end pq dmpl Morgans, I'll keep moving her inventory right into my safety deposit box. If the prices are dropping, I'll be buying them all the way down.

My ambitions [and pocketbook] are much more pedestrian. I've started a date/mm set and am over half way there with minor expense...I only lack two dates for a date set, but I do find myself running out of steam on this set. I'm starting to get more jazzed about completing my IHC and Lincolns and have taken an interest in a 7070 type set. I'm not to the point where I'm going to sell them all but I may put it down for a while.

Though they have the biggest collector following, I have never cared for Morgans. I only own one of them, an 84 CC in PC 6 (formerly in a GSA Holder) I bought at the GSA sale. I keep it for my type set.

BTW, I can honestly say I don't care about the gold buffalos, either (and will not buy one, even at melt).

Now if you want to talk about 19th or early 20th century type, I'm all ears.

I don't mind the design so much. I just can't see my self collecting them. If I could afford a set of DMPL high grade CC's maybe but the average Morgan just does not look that pretty.
