    PRO hands down the best.

    BGS - most durable
SGC - most attractive (flips gotta go)

If anyone hasn't noticed yet, SGC has changed their fonts
and has added the word "pristine" under the 100 now. They
are making some changes, and the flips may be the next thing
to change per their operations manager.

I like the SGC holder except for one problem - the card can fall 'under' the gasket. Whether that can damage the card - I don't know?

    In my opinion:

1st place - BGS (by a long shot)
    2nd place - SGC
    3rd place - GAI
    4th place - PSA

PSA is especially bad when they use those God awful "condom" slabs on cards like the SP Authentic RCs.
  • I hate BGS/BVG but feel that their slab is by far the most aesthetically-pleasing one out there. I've owned one and cracked it open to send to PSA though!!!
  • kobykoby Posts: 1,699 ✭✭
I still like the simple design on the PSA holders.

The SGC holders may actually be harmful for cards. I have seen several cards that are clipped underneath the SGC holder's gasket. It is unclear whether this causes permanent damage, but why take a chance? Also, both the SGC and Beckett holders are too bulky and take up much more space than standard size PSA holders.

    BGS, hands down.
  • chaz43chaz43 Posts: 2,140 ✭✭✭
I'm keeping score and will let everyone know as things go along. I can't count the responses where someone says I like this label of SGC but I like PSA for their design....it can only be one choice. So far here are the numbers:

    PSA - 3

    BGS - 1

    GAI - 0

    SGC - 1

I like the GAI holders because they put info on the top of the case so when they are in a stack, you can see whats what.

This is truly one of those topics where each of the Big 4 has something different to offer, so your ultimate preference is based on what attributes you value the most:

SGC - My personal preference because the black insert can be custom fit to odd-sized cards, and provides the greatest visual appeal
BGS - I like the no-movement sandwich concept and the gold and silver flips for 8.5 or higher cards (I'm not so hot on the white flips for 8.0 or lower grades)
GAI - Black insert similar to SGC, and the folded flip provides basic info on the top
PSA - Looks better than SGC or GAI with dark-bordered cards, and takes up the least amount of space when stacked

Edited to add example of SGC custom-sized black insert. PSA does not have a proper sized holder for these cards, so every one they grade gets a condom:

For best holder, I'd go with BGS.

    1. BGS - Stackable, best card protection
    2. SGC - Best looking, stackable, gasket can damage card
    3. GAI - Like the labeled top edge, gasket can damage card, don't stack well
    4. PSA - Don't stack well, no labeled top edge, and I've seen cards damaged from the side rails. Also, on large cards--say 1954 Bowman football--the PSA on the bottom right obscures the corner of the card.
  • As far as I'm concerend......It's a tie as all do the job in protecting the card.

They all seem to protect the cards just fine.

But, when I see a PSA holder, I have near absolute
confidence that the item inside is the real deal, and
a sense of "value added" is conveyed to me.

I echo the vote for PSA and its simplicity in design.
  • I use SGC for my T206 collection (because most are submitted "raw") and PSA for my 1955 Topps AA (because most are bought already slabbed) and PSA for my two-time defending champion Nate Colbert player collection (because it's a good way to use the free vouchers from subscribing to the SMR!)

I do like the visual appeal of the SGC holders and the "top label" on GAI cards. PSA slabs are simple in design, which also has its appeal

    1) SGC
    2) PSA
    3) GAI
    4) BGS (not a big fan of different colored labels)

I think SGC is the best looking.
PSA has the best flip, and still a good looking holder.
    Dont care for GAI.
And I think BGS are too thick.

i dont know about "best" as far as protection.. hell, probably Beckett..

as for looks, i guess it all depends on the card.. PSA slabs look good on most stuff.. SGC looks great on some cards, and really chitty on others.. same with GAI.. i really like looks of the metallic GAI flip, but just like with SGC, the black insert looks great with some cards, and not others..

Actually, I'd like to amend my previous remarks to say that BGS ranks at or near the bottom of my personal list because too many of their holders contain sheet cut cards. I do enjoy the PSA holders, however, because they're the only holders in which I generally see accurately graded hand cut cards.

If you hold 2 of the the same card next to each other, 1 in a bgs holder, the other in a PSA holder, you can see a clear difference..the PSA plastic is much clearer and crisper and actually brightens up the card, the BGS holder somehow dulls the finish of the card (too thick maybe)...A the image behind a PSA holderis is WAY clearer, crisper, and brighter than BGS holder...the only thing bgs holder is better is in RIGIDNESS and strength, but i dont know anyone who FLEXES or bends holders of cards they like, so why is thicker plastic better? its not

specifically the refractor cards look marvelous under a psa holder....

I also prefer the SGC holder. I have no great issues with the holders of PSA, BGS or GAI, they do a fine job of protecting the card. But, chaz says we can only have one favoriteimage, so I'll vote for SGC

I buy PSA cards almost exclusively and when I buy a SGC or GAI card I crack it and send it to PSA. Having said that, I don't like PSA's holders very much. I just got back a 46 card sub and fresh from the box there were scratches and small "pits" on a good number of the holders. They must get bounced around when they are sonically sealed. Although PRO Grading is the joke of the industry, they do say that their holders provide UV protection, which is a very good thing. I don't really believe them of course, but I am sure that a company could make a holder with some UV protection. It would aid in display options for my cards.

My pick is GAI, with SGC a close second.
