It looks like they made a counterfeit coin...and then altered the date. Double trouble.

The 1856 dollar he is also selling is another typical Chinese fake. I have an article on these coming up in COINage in a week or two.

I have sent her an email telling her that those two coins are not genuine and asked her to cancel the auctions. Let us see what happens now. She is a trading assistant also. (whatever that is.) i am getting pretty tired of those fakes on ebay trying to be sold as genuine with some artificial excuse as to not knowing if they are real or not-BULL- i used to report all those auctions with fake coins but it was to no avail as ebay did nothing about them. So it is let the buyer beware- there is a bidder but i doubt if a sale will take place-it is either a shill or a bidder who will withdraw his bid or not pay. Bobimage

I e-mailed the seller earlier and asked about a return policy on this coin...I didn't see one and I've not heard back.

    this is a good case.

a.) obvious fake, to all, bidders, buyers, seller, and ebay.
b.) why is the auction allowed to complete.

this is harmful to all of ebay's coin 'customers', bidders and sellers.

when someone auctions an 1895, it should immediately come to ebays attention for screening. immediately. now suppose, they just let it go, have the bidder then complain, get refund, seller gets NARU, paypal disupute/refund, whatever. you telling me this is easier and cheaper, for ebay, then shutting down the auction in the first place?

what a bunch of marooons. and i'll repeat, this ruins it for the legit buyers and sellers.

Yet in 2 replies to people here that have questioned the seller they claim it is being graded now. I think that in itself refutes the new seller excuse or 'unknowing' seller.

Can't be too many counterfeits with altered dates, can there?

    Got this from the seller:

Thanks so much for the concern, we are having it graded as we speak, so hopefully all concerns will be lifted before very much longer, I would never intentionally wrong anyone, so before anyone ever paid one dollar for it, it would be graded. Thanks again!...

Sounds like the seller may have not realized what was going on.... or just trying to make a quick buck, take your pick. I tend to think that the seller was unaware of the authenticity of this coin. A seller with a feedback score of 2541 with 100% positives usually is a straight shooter.

With all that being said I think either the seller or eBay should yank the auction now.

The counterfeit is not even close. The whole coin only bears a resemblance to Morgan Dollar.

Should I go as high as 20K? I'm only in for 15K at the time. If I increase the bid instead of being out a Toyota Yaris, I'll be out a Subaru Impreza.
