Going through my old hoard of wheaties, I came across this 1943 cent. Anyone want to hazard a grade?

If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.

    AU50.
  • Wow....Everything from 45 to 63 so far. Where are the points of wear that are most disturbing?

Although AU58 is possible, this coin looks mint state to me. If there was wear, the zink coating would be gone and you would see steel corrosion (rust) in those places.

This is how old original steel cents generally look. They don't have the flashy luster you typically see with MS66 and MS67 examples.

    62 to 63.

    I can't fathom a 45 for that.

It must be the photo. I see a 45 as well. It doesn't even look like an especially attractive 45 but it is solid for the grade.

Only G4 because his hat is worn off. OH, wait, never had a hat on the coin. OK then I'd say MS62.5.
I remenber when I was a kid and those things came out. I wanted everyone I could get so my Dad kept bringging them home. I still have 26 rolls of the things.

  • I'm not sure what the deal is with E Pluribus Unum. Is that a weak strike or wear?

Technical grade is AU-58, but it will pass as a low end (MS-62) Unc. in the market

The remarkable thing about this piece is that it has most of it original zinc color in a subdued sense. The coins usually turn a dark gray.

"Flaming Gray" original pieces in PCGS MS-66 are still out there and not that expensive.
