I would send the BGS to PSA as well. Should have a great shot at a 10. One nice thing about BGS at least they tell you were your card have fallen short of perfection. Still prefer PSA though.

88 donruss , like most fools , I was 15 and opened cases of these things at the time
  • FYI, bbcexchange got in a cello case of this 88 donruss stuff.

    http://www.bbcexchange.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=2887&osCsid=ad9ddb1caab738671efd7760ee05d57d

72 bucks+shipping for 12 cello boxes seems like a pretty good deal(although shipping might bring up the price quite a bit).

  • Hello All,

Just sending off a couple small submissions until another $5 special is available. :-) I'll post the results when I get them.

These latest cards all came from a blister rack pack. Hope they turn out well.
Saving the entire fine looking factory set case cards I busted for later. They just look a little smaller just a little but much cleaner.

How’s the success rate of factory set cards in donruss???

Also if anyone has some 9's or 10's in this set and is looking to sell just PM me.

    Thanks,
    Joe

I'm curious to know the success rate of factory sets as well. Just purchased one for about $9 that still had the cards in the cello wrap.

I recently broke down a huge group of 1988 Leaf boxes and these cards are very tough in gem mint. I sent in a few dozen of the best HOF cards and sent to PSA. Only got a couple 10's and twenty or thirty 9's. The big stars are listed on Ebay with starting bid of .99 and no reserve. Will probably lose a bunch of money on these if people don't realize how hard it is to get these babies graded...

This is one of the most compelling reasons I can think of to open an Ebay store. Just drop 'em in there at 6 bucks each; eventually they'll disappear, and you don't have to worry about sellng them for a buck each.
  • Joe, haven't seen any activity on the 88 set, is the goal still alive. If so I have 2 nice 10's on ebay right now. Madlock and Larkin.

Carefull with the factory sets. More than likely they will suffer from "Cello Rounded Corners". Cards that show absolutely no white, may very well come back as 7s because of this phenomena.

I just listed about 50 really nice high grade 88 Donruss cards on ebay (lots of stars and 1 of 1 PSA 10s). These are a few of them:

I'm not looking to sell the three MVP 10s offline. They are all pop 1s and with the colored borders are not easy to find.

They did not come from the factory sets. I broke one brick from one of the factory sets and got scared when I saw the corners. I haven't touched any of the other bricks or sets. From what I saw, you would be lucky to find a PSA 8 in that brick. These came from a combination of unopened products I bought from a local store. It took a lot of packs to find the 50 cards I had graded. There are big centering issues and the colored borders are almost all chipped in some way. It would be a tough challenge to finish this set in PSA 9/10.

Yes and no. Very, very tough set to find in PSA 9/10 grade. That said - probably one of the most overproduced sets of all time. If you have tons of patience and time, it is likely doable. I remember a few years ago on Ebay [perhaps in 2003?] when someone was selling a truckload of 1988 Donruss Wax cases. Something like 45 wax cases.

    Amazing-

The MVP subset is extraordinarily difficult in 10. Took me forever to find Schmidt in 9, and I was lucky enough to even find a 10. But was a long time in searching to get there.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • I'll never forget an encounter I had back in 2000. I sold off the remainder of my hockey and basketball SLU's. The buyer was from Toronto. He decided (to save money) to drive down and pick up the SLU's as he was picking up a huge lot 20 miles away from me. I had no problem because there was something like fourteen cases of figures I liquidated. Anyway, the guy shows up in a box truck. He inspects the figures, hands me cash and asks me to help load the boxes on his truck. He opened up the back and my jaw nearly hit the ground. Cases upon cases of Donruss, Fleer and Topps from '84-91. There was easily 20 cases each of '88 Donruss, '87 Topps, '89 Fleer...He told me he bought them for the equivalency of 3 cents on the dollar of 'book value' at the time, thanks to a bankruptcy liquidation auction.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

Once you add in the freight costs - I wonder if he made his money back...?

Cracking a box of 88 Donruss now. The centering is really touch on these cards. Practically all of them are going straight into the recycle bin. I think my whole box is diamond cut

Hi guys, As a fellow Donruss collector I have enjoyed reading this thread. I am attempting an 86 Donruss and every now and then will add to the 83 Donruss set I have. I just bought an 88 Donruss rack case from Steve at BBC Exchange and should have it before week's end.
I was planning on submitting any star cards i think would grade 9 or better. IF any of you guys building the 88 set want what I have left you can have them for shipping cost. Good luck on the 88 set,
    Barry

I also would like to inquire about some of the results you guys are getting from factory sets.
I just sent in a submission with some factory set 86 Donruss, The results were all over the board, two even came back as evid. of trimming.
I did get several 9's and 10's from the sub, but I couldnt for the life of me see the difference between what Psa deemed an 8,9 or 10.
All the cards had near perfect centering and although some of the corners had the factory set rounding I couldnt see much difference between the rounding on the 10's from the rounded corners on the 8's.
If any of you guys have any suggestions on what Psa looks for on the factory set corners it would be a big help.
    Thanks,Barry

While we're on the subject of 1988 Donruss, I just bought this case. It a 1988 Donruss All Stars & Pop Ups case. Wow, are these tough. I've opened 2 boxes of the 20 so far and I have exactly 1 card that has a shot at a PSA 10. 1 card in 2 boxes! It's a Gary Carter. I have 1 Pop Up that looks like a 9, it's a Ryne Sandberg. From looking at the Pop Ups, I don't think a 10 is coming from these, they are ridiculously tough. We'll see what happens with the other 18 boxes when I get time to open them.
  • mikeschmidtmikeschmidt Posts: 5,756 ✭✭✭
    Steve-

You're not kidding on it being a really tough issue. It took me a long time to find the All-Stars Schmidt in PSA 10 (I think there are now two), and there are exactly five Schmidt Pop-Ups graded PSA 9 MINT, and I think four of them came through personal submissions. The Pop-Ups often have some fraying along the Pop-Up portion of the player -- right out of the pack, and sometimes there are some bends/creases that are in the card from where the Pop-Up die-cut was put in.

Good luck on that -- A very, very condition-sensitive issue.

I had 2 cello packs with Jeffries showing on top. I was the envy of the town in my little card shop at the time :) Jeffries was "technically" a short print in the set but "short printed 1988 Donruss" is a classic oxymoron!
