1980 Topps Baseball

Anyone out there actively building a set of these? It looks like you can pick up 9's at a reasonable price. I think this will be my next project. One of these years!

The trouble will likely be that the cost of grading alone will be more expensive than the set, and in the end, you would likely have a difficult time getting even close to what you put into it if you went and sold it. Those guys with the late 70's sets have that same problem... the complete registry sets, when offered, always sell for way under what they actually cost to assemble.

Agreed, however that is why some think of building such sets as a hobby.

    Go for it, gosteelers!

All of we late-70's collectors know how cost inefficient it is to compile graded sets. Heck - we pay $5 to get a common graded that wouldn't sell for a dime raw! As such, I can assure you of one thing...and I say this not knowing, nor trying to get into the heads of, the late-70's Registry guys: not a single, solitary one of us is in this for the money.

    Good luck!

Anyone who has a graded Omar Moreno PSA 8 or better let me know. I will pay $50 for a 9 and $25 for an 8.

  • And I will also pay very well for a PSA 9 Dick Davis. Last card I need to finish of my Brewers team set.

Interesting....looks like Omar Moreno is not only difficult in the '84 Donruss set, but also in the '80 Topps.

What? I've gone through tons of unopened 1980's over the last couple years. I wish I would have known that a while back. I probably could have gotten you 9's with no problem.

Thanks to Norberto Salinas, he offered me his 1980 Omar Moreno PSA 9, that puts me at 100% on my Pirates team set. It is the first set I have finished! I have been working on it for 3 years.

  • Hello,

I just purchased a box of 1980 Topps Baseball from Baseball Card Exchange. Should get here by Friday. Should I rip it? If I do what cards are especially hard to find in top condition? I am thinking about collecting this set myself.

    Thanks, Mark

  • I agree I just started this set as well, I was able to pick up PSA 9's for around $3.00 a pop and the stars were around $10.00! believe it or not this set is fairly condition sensitive because the white borders tend to chip very easily but i have enjoyed it thus far
  • Hi Mark, I am just trying to finish a 1980 Topps Orioles team set in PSA 9 or better. I still have Pat Kelly (#543) and Tippy Martinez (#706) to locate so I am sure these two are difficult to find in good shape. (I've been at it for almost 1 1/2 years.) Also the Palmer card is tough (PSA 9 recently sold on ebay for $100 even). The Orioles Billy Smith is tough as well. If you think you can spare the Kelly & Martinez, please let me know...Thanks!! I've cracked about 3 1/2 vending cases and about a box worth of racks over the last couple years grading 1980 Topps. I've literally put my magnifier up to about 20,000 1980 Topps cards checking for gradable ones. The one card that I remember always coming out bad was Tony Armas. I'm not sure why and I haven't checked the pop reports on it, but the green was always smeared and the card was always off center. I'm sure there is a couple others but that's the one I remember off hand.

I've probably already stated this before, but this was my first set that I collected growing up (I was 8) and I would really like to get some of these slabbed beauties! Maybe someday.

    1980 cards are very chippy-sensitive.

my favorite set of all time, but seriously underrated & very challenging (ie, expensive) to find w/ non-chippy borders from #1-726!

    =====

gosteelers, i would bug the psa set registrants if you're building a graded set. when i built my raw set, i found them very resourceful & sometimes a source to get the tough psa 9s you may not be able to find. didn't you sell me a bunch of psa 9s last year btw?

In what can only be termed poetic irony, when I submitted a 1980 Topps Phillies Team card to PSA [maybe 3-4 years ago], I was hoping for an 8 on the card, with an outside chance of a 9, but I was submitting it merely for completion, and had not been able to find that card already graded in PSA 9. Imagine my shock and surprise when it came back to me in a PSA 10 holder.

  • Hey all. I am new to this forum (although I have read almost all of the posts.) 1980 is the first year I began collecting cards, and I would like to put together a PSA 10 set. I know this is going to cost much more than it's worth. I also have a limited budget. Any suggestions or help out there for a newbie like me.

I just bid on a bunch of them on eBay, and commons seem to go for about $10 plus shipping. Is this too much, or is it about right?

    Any help would be appreciated.

$10 for a 1980 Topps PSA 10 seems like a really good price. You're basically paying for the holder, but prices will not go (materially) lower than that, and some PSA 10s will go for much much more.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Go for 9's instead. Won't cost as much and I believe a Henderson Rookie in 10 will cost you at least $7k.
  • I know the Henderson is going to be a ton. But I'm stubborn and want to do it as a 10. I also know it will take at least 10 years for me to complete due to budget.

The Ryan might also set you back a couple thousand and there are a couple cards (ie Harlow) that may never see a 10 because of print marks.
Other than that, 1980 will be one of the easier sets to complete in PSA 10 (1981 is much tougher)
  • I appreciate the offer Frank, but right now I am looking to do it in a 10. When I realize how crazy that is, I will get a hold of you.image

I read that. I'm glad 1980 is the first year I began collecting. I am actually completing sets back to 1970 in Topps only. Originally my demented mind thought I would do 10 sets for every year. That was before I realized the cost. I am Ok with only doing 1980. For Now.image

  • Good luck to you, but get ready to spend, spend, spend. You can get high pop commons for around $10. 4SharpCorners will be where you find a lot of the available stock on eBay or search for graded lots on eBay (they pop up every once in a while). After spending a couple of grand, you may scale back to include some 9s in your set.
  • Probably, but for now, I want to continue with my insane search for 10's. Maybe a second job is in order.
