I agree about the #68 Harlow!! With only four 9s and ZERO 10s this is the toughest card population wise in the entire set! Coincidentally, Frank with the #1 set has one and I have the other three 9s. I will sell one for $30 and I pay shipping if anyone interested.

Always great to see another name on the board! I own the second current finest set (though not currently for view on the registry) and I can't count all of the times Frank, BT, Rob and myself beat the heck out of one another on ebay but that's for another message! Having said that, $10 seems to be the going rate for most of the heavily populated cards. You asked for the best advice on collecting this set so I'll give you my two cents worth: 1. Stay away from the star/HOF players! These will cost you the most money and you can pick them up anytime as they are typically the most often graded and collected. Would you rather spend $100 on a Reggie Jackson or the same amount on 8-10 commons knowing you can pick up the Reggie later on?! 2. Stay away from the Yankees, Phillies and Red Sox cards as most of their collectors are NUTS about their teams! That doesn't mean you shouldn't bid on them, just don't be surprised if and when it costs you more than $10 for one of those commons. Same question as above......would you rather spend $20 to $50 for a Yankee common or spend the same amount and get bewteen 2-5 other commons from smaller market teams? 3. Be aware of low population cards. I have never seen a 1 of 1 sold let alone OFFERED for $10 so be prepared to spend for one of those. If you don't have access to the population report you can use Frank's #1 set as a guide! Just view any of his cards and if it is a 9 it will say its poulation next to it with the higher population next to that. If the card is a 10 then its population will be listed next to it with obviously none higher. Once again......would you rather spend $30 to $50 for a 1 of 1 or the same amount for 3-5 other commons when that 1 of 1 may possibly be available later on?!? 4. Sometimes you can get a good deal on "buy it now" listings when shipping is free. I've bought a few for between $12 and $20 and if you are willing to spend $10 for one when it is usually $3 to $5 to ship anyway what's another couple of dollars specially if it is for a lower pop card or one you really, really want! 5. Don't be afraid to use this message board or contact other members of the registry about cards they have you are interested in. Lots of times people will list on these boards what they have and what they want for it and/or they will post when they are about to break a set up and sometimes you can get in quick for the cards you want. I don't use this board very often but I have had success buying and selling/trading with other registery members and have never been burned by any of them! A few months ago I was aware Brian (BT) was breaking up his set (still showing #2 though I have leap-frogged him) and I sent him a message and he hooked me up with an awesome deal I will NEVER get again picking up 114 cards including Dawson, McCovey, six 1 of 1s, a regular checklist and some low pop team cards that pushed my set over his 9.51 set rating. (Thanks again, Brian!!) 6. Whatever your budget may be, don't be afraid to stick to it! If you are willing to spend $100 a month for 5 to 10 cards that's probably pretty reasonable. At 726 cards in the set X .01 (1%) is 7.26 cards. If you pick up 7 cards a month for a year you'll have about 11% of the set and are on pace for the 10 year plan you mentioned. Obviously you'll have to spend more the farther along your set gets but I think this formula will get you to 40 or 50% before you have to decide how much you REALLY want to spend to keep going. By the way, The Sports Market Report did an article on this set in the November 2008 issue. You should be able to order a back-issue for $5 or so through PSA. Good luck with your set and if I haven't been much help I know I've given you a couple things to think about! Jeff Russell

I will probably list my set when I get to around 100 cards. I currently have zero (although there should be 27 in the mail). All 10's so far. Still crazy.
"The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money."
Actually, all of my sets ARE listed they just are not all published for the public to view. I have a few 1980 team sets published that can be viewed under BP315 sets for Russell's collections. I know my 1980 Braves and Angels team sets can be viewed and they are #1 for now. I knew early on I would never be a threat for #1 as a whole so I tried to have a couple of real nice team sets. I am still upgrading some cards for my regular issue set and need to get my printer fixed for scans before I want to make public. I also started a second set that is 70% complete from all of my upgrades and PSA 9 extras I have floating around. I want to go through both sets and make sure I have my best 9s in my best set before going public as well. The link to BP315's other sets will be under both Russell's 1980 Braves and Angels team sets if anyone wants to look.

I have this group of 425 PSA 9's NQ (one 10) for sale. $2000 safely delivered by check or MO. Postage alone would be $400++ if you bought them solo.

I'm selling a hand-picked 374-card near set of '80 Topps on the BST board. Seven graded cards come with the lot including a Henderson PSA 9. Here's the link if you're interested.
Anyone collect the yellow name variations to the set ? SCD ( 2011) lists Braun ( 9), Stanley ( 387), Wathan ( 547), and Poquette ( 597). It also lists a no name Pryor (164). I have those plus a yellow for Washington ( 508) and McEnaney (563). These are all print defects, but 5 are listed and the Stanley was a must have for awhile.
I also have the 1980 Yankee Team card proof with Martin rather than Howser as manager, and one of the Topps 1980 Sticker Prototypes, and a set (3) of the 1980 Topps Test Coins
Been very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time, as I just added the last 2 checklists in PSA 10 to complete my checklist run of all 6 checklists in PSA 10 for this set. I picked them up on eBay from 4SC as he just listed them.
Ironically I also was able to pick up from 4SC's the mini 6 card 1979 highlights set that is #1-#6 cards also in PSA 10.
Cool!! The highlights cards tend to run a little "diamond" cut--especially the Rose #4! The Mota #3 only has 2 10's and the #6 Unser has 5 10's but is a Philly so those team collectors love to snatch him up. Now you can go after the "team checklist" cards or another subset is the leaders cards 201-207 which are fairly populated with the #204 stolen base leaders the toughest with a population of 9. Frank Smith--owner of the #1 1980 set--might have some extra 10s kicking around if you ask him. I've bought some from him in the past and some 9s for my second set and he is a good guy. Couldn't hurt to ask. Good luck with the rest!

Ironically the only card in 10 I need from 201-207 is #204. I have not seen one in quite some time.
<< <i>Anyone out there actively building a set of these? It looks like you can pick up 9's at a reasonable price. I think this will be my next project. One of these years!

I also have the 1980 Yankee Team card proof with Martin rather than Howser as manager, and one of the Topps 1980 Sticker Prototypes, and a set (3) of the 1980 Topps Test Coins

Ironically I also was able to pick up from 4SC's the mini 6 card 1979 highlights set that is #1-#6 cards also in PSA 10.
I'm at 34% and having alot of fun!!!

<< <i>Cool!! >>
Paul.
Later, Paul.
<< <i>Anyone out there actively building a set of these? It looks like you can pick up 9's at a reasonable price. I think this will be my next project. One of these years!
