About two weeks ago Russ posted the following to alert us to what he found at a local coin store:
<< <i> I saw an NGC MS65 1920 Pilgrim today that will knock your dick in the dirt! Rainbow target on both sides with luster and cartwheel that will sear your retinas! This coin jumps up and does the eye appeal boogie! It ain't cheap at $495, but beauty is never cheap. I'm poor so I can't buy it, but anybody who's interested in it, PM me and I'll tell you where it's at. And, no, I don't want anything other than to see a forum member get a shot at it. >>
It has arrived and available for your viewing pleasure. So is Russ Da Man? or Dead meat?

That depends - if you let me have the coin, he is "Da Man" (and, as an added bonus, so are you). Otherwise, he is "Dead meat" (and so are you).
That is a gorgeous Pilgrim. For the record, I was going to buy it sight-unseen, simply on Russ's emphatic recommendation, until I saw that you had already replied to him.
I am not trying spoil the moment, this is a great coin. I know Russ has a great eye and perhaps at the coin shop this coin was looking great in bad lighting.

gonna buy a candy bar with it ;-)
<< <i>Nice coin. I have noticed however that a well imaged coin with the proper lighting and a great camera shot can be deceiving. What does this coin look like without all the lighting tricks and camera angles? >>
There are no tricks in that image. In fact, it is better in-hand.
<< <i>Its very hard to believe that the coin was up here in the "Coin Mecca" of the world. >>
Yeah, Ken, it shocked the crap out of me. They bought it raw across the counter and I got there right after it came back from NGC.

What does this coin look like without all the lighting tricks and camera angles? If I took this coin outside on a cloudy day what does it look like then? I am just curious, if we are buying the photo and not the coin. A lot of ebay coins are light this.

I'm not a fancy photographer. I use no software other than to crop and size. I use a four ounce Pentax Optio that I use for backpacking.
The coloring is accurate, although when viewed in hand a bit more pastel in nature, not quite as dark. I had to darken the exposure (I think that's what it is called) a bit to accomodate the the blazing white centers. So, generally speaking the coin is brighter and lighter in hand.
Looks like a superlative coin. With luster and color and eye appeal, yeah oh, yeah.
Way to go, Fatman. If it was a Carver, I would have to kill both you and Russ.

It is the first Sight-Unseen coin I have purchased in many years. But after reading Russ's words it seemed a no brainer. Heck, if it turned out to be a dog just think of the fun I would have had rubbing it in. He would never have lived it down. And that kind of fun is definitely worth a few hundred dollars.
<< <i>Heck, if it turned out to be a dog just think of the fun I would have had rubbing it in. >>
That would have been priceless. It was a no lose scenario. I think you should have bought the biggest loser Pilgrim you could find and posted it as the "Russ D in the Dirt Coin."
We could have taunted him for months. But... no. It has to be a nice coin.

Russ sez "that will knock your dick in the dirt!" and gets no flack. I used the term "boooooooner toner" (w/o extra "o"s) and get slammed for indecency. Go figure!
I think Russ deserves a finder's fee, maybe half the spread between your price and greysheet MS66.
<< <i>Looks like a super Pilgrim.

I take Russ at his word that he is not interested in a finders fee. But I owe him big time and hope some day I can return the favor.
Russ did the coin right with his most eloquent description!!
“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

<< <i>I think I'd still flip Russ a finders fee for that beauty. >>
Don't want one. I'm just glad it found a good home with somebody who really appreciates it. Besides, I can use this with the local dealer to squeeze them next time I'm buying proof sets.

I wish I had that coin and you had a feather......................never mind
I am very happy for ya!

Very nice of Russ to turn Fats on to that one.

Thanks to all for the kind words on the coin. And, of course, thanks to Russ for letting me know about it.
ttt....for the Sunday crowd.
how many did they mint?
what is the combined pops at NGC and PCGS total in MS?
lazy but semi curious minds want to know.
<< <i>how many did they mint? >>
1920 net mintage 152,000 which is high in commemorative terms. Add to that the 1921 Pilgrim net mintage of 20,000 you have more than enough to go around for the type collectors.
<< <i>what is the combined pops at NGC and PCGS total in MS? >>
Very available in MS65 and lower. Much tougher in MS66+.
Pilgrims are easy to find in gem grade and a relatively inexpensive one at that. Great color? not very common.
<< <i>I probably would have paid at least double what you paid. >>
Geez, I wish I would have known that before I posted about it.
