1973 Topps Baseball fanatics!

Post here please. The only other 70's set that I really enjoy are the 73's. I just love the design. I need to educate myself on the set! Post away!

The 73 set by Topps is also one of my favorites. It's the last set the from the old days which was issued via series and thus has a "high number " run which is a bit tiougher than the rest of the cards. The high #s features the rookie card of Mike Schmidt which is one of the most popular post war cards made.

The actual verbage of the PSA set registry calls this set "Not one of the most attractive issues of the 70s" well that's entirely a SUBJECTIVE opinion. The set has many action or in-motion shots, some are just terific to see. The set contains the very last regular issued cards of Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente while they were active players. A subset shows Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig, and Walter Johnson among others.

The backs are black with an orange/gold trim, very tough to get in nice shape without any wear. There are a few variations with some of the manager cards. Not overly expensive in 7 or 8 shape so still a reasonable goal to complete a nice one, I think the top set on the registry is now at 9.03 GPA and 100% complete. Very impressive to me.

By the way, if anyone has a # 605 ( Cabell RC ) in PSA 7 or 8 , I still need it to finish off the high numbers.

Card # 1 is a bear to find nice and centered. Aaron,Ruth and Mays lead it off with excellant photos. Bench , Clemente Stargell and I love the McCovey with Bench.Nolan Ryan always seems to have 2 print spots in the circle or a roller mark along the right edge. If it doesn't have either of them its off centered. Thurman Munson also appears on a card other than his regular. Any guesses?

The black borders on the back are very hard to find without some degree of chipping.

I would definately examine them closely if you choose to do some submitting.

Here is a back on a PSA 9.
  • The Terry Crowley card is one of my favorites.
Whoever said we wash away with the rain ?
  • Several years ago both Bench and Rose told me the 1973 card is their least favorite and one of them, I can't remember which, complained to Topps, which might explain the super action shots of both of them for the 1974 set, which both have also said is among their favorites.

I haven't looked in a while, but last time I checked, my set was I think #4 on the registry.

    Interesting!

How ironic is it that this set has many nice action shots! Thanks for all insight .... keep it coming!

  • I think it was Pete Rose who complained about the close up of his butt. I don't think he has as much of a gripe as Reggie Jackson , he is barely recognizable on his 73 card. Although, the 74 version made up for it.
Funny thing is that Reggie's 77 card is hideous but the 78 was IMO his best!

  • There was a nice article on this set in one of the past couple of SMRs. I think the photography from this set was revolutionary. The Pat Corrales is one of my favorite cards of all time.

  • I like the set because of all the interesting action shots - they hadn't quite mastered the art yet, and they put in a lot of stuff you would never see on a card today, or even a few years later. Johnny Bench, anyone?

    Writer 11,

Thanks for posting this link! I recently moved over to the UK for a few years, and my SMR's never made it over. (I'm sure it's not a USPS error!)

I, like many of you, started collecting this set when I was a kid. In fact. many of the cards I intially had graded came from those that I personally purchased from the corner store in 1973. The Justin boot box that I kept them in for all of those years did not do them any favors, so I was rather disappointed when my grades popped. Furthermore, this being my first submission, I was an extreme novice in what to look for in a card to send it in for grades. Over the years I have become much better with my submissions, however, I am still waiting for my first 10!

This is my favorite set of the 1970's. I really like all of the action shots and have made the Manager variations my personal mission. I have probably submitted to PSA over 50-1973 Manager cards with expicit details on how the cards differ from the other cards submitted. (here I submitted 16 different manager cards 4262941, 30067)

I lobbied PSA in early 2006 to include additional variations, and provided text with multiple visual examples for each variation, only to be instructed as follows:

"When we compiled the 1973 Topps master set, we used the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards and compared that to the varieties that PSA currently recognizes. To date, we have yet to recognize the new varieties below. Once PSA begins doing so, we will update the online composite accordingly. If you would like to send me a scan of the new varieties, I will gladly take them to the research department to see if in the future we will begin to recognize the varieties."

So I sent 3 zipped files containing the following scans:

Oakland A's Manager/Coaches Brown/Natural Background (Trees Behind Irv Noren)
    imageimage

Orange BG Vern Hoscheit Left Ear Missing & Right Corner of Hat Missing, Irv Noren Right Ear Missing, Right Corner of Hat Missing, Left Ear Bottom Missing, Trees Missing in BG

Carry on from my last message as I hit the "Reply to Thread" instead of "Preview" Doh!

So the next reply from PSA was the following:

"I spoke with the research department about the new varieties. At this time these varieties are not documented, once they have been documented, then PSA will begin designating the cards accordingly. They suggested that you contact either Beckett or Bob Lemke (SCD) and see if they will begin to document these varieties."

    Contact Beckett????

I sent Beckett and Bob Lemke an email, after I received the reply in May. I am still waiting for a reply from both!

Anyway, this continues to be a personal mission as I have found various other variations, blank backs, etc in the set. (Although, it has been sidetracked by my Ex-Pat assignment in the UK!)

So here are more pictures for other 1973 collectors!

    Cheers,

Ah, that is much better now! Great looking cards! The Aaron card has always been one of my favorites. I still haven't sent any cards in to get graded, I do plan on it, but haven't got around to doing so.

On this Aaron card what kind of grade should I expect? With the corners and chipping is there any hope for a 6?

Yep, that's standard. If the front is centered, the back will be almost miscut on that card. The best I've ever seen the back of the card centered when the front of that card is centered is about 70-30.

    Rick,

Most likely a 6, but the centering could get you a 7. Here are 6 examples of Aaron's of various grades. Sorry, I have no rear scans.

BTW, That #1 raw you posted looks great. Probably would grade an 8, unless they spent more than 1 second looking at the rear.

Don't get your hopes to high, not all varieties get noted even after documentation.

    Hopefully yours may go better.

I noticed that on card #191 that there were 2 different colors. It is most noticeable on the back where the card number is.

This is the only card that was "Yellow" or "Gold" instead of white. Is this fairly common on the 73's?

Does anyone have a 1973 Topps Yankees Team PSA 9? I am looking for one!
    PM or gregmo32@aol.com
    Thanks!
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!
Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !
  • If anyone has a PSA 9 Don Sutton #10 or a raw that has a great shot at a 9 PM me.
    Thanks,
    Joe
