gREG, I am so jealous ! lol. I have bought two sets from Steve a 75 and 83 football.
The 75 was nice, but had a lot of off-centered cards in it.(if you will look at the set registry you will see the stars i had graded from this set) The 83set is where I pulled my psa 10 marcus allen from.

  • I have finished my 72 set in 8 and above, that was worse than a 2 year prostate exam. I ended up paying $177 for #1 in an 8, I did that since I had not seen one on ebay for 2 years and I had sent in to PSA no less than 6 to grade never getting one back higher than a seven. Then 12 days later another PSA 8 goes on ebay, (Carlos' #1) and it sells for like $50. Oh well it was done. I am now #2 current on 71 and have another 10 cards to put on this weekend. I just got back a 70 #20 Leroy Kelly PSA 9 NQ and #114 Bubba Smith PSA #8 NQ from last months grading special. I think I will put them on ebay. I have no interest in the 70 set but these two cards were great looking. I am interested in a 73 raw with maybe grading the stars but I can't afford to get 500 cards graded! and then have the set be worth $600. Anyway, I am glad someone started this thread.

PS: has anyone but me had real trouble with PSA grading 71's? I sent in 27 and only got 2 8's up until that fiasco I was batting 80% 8's. These cards I sent in were from unopened packs and not OC anymore than the average 8 in my set.

I think my next set will be 69 in 8 and above and 62 in 7 and above.

ok, now that we have the centering issue out there, I thought I would bring up another question.....

What is the best action shot on a football card from the 70's ??? Please if you can feel free to post a scan of your favorite ...image
    image

  • I would have to say #343 Joe Nameth IA 1972 set. It has gone down in value lately but for a lot of years it was the In Action card to get!

I have some - let me know who you need. I just pulled some blazers from a wax tray that I had. By the way, do you have a nice 78 Baumhower? I'm having the worst time finding a nice one to submit for my all time Dolphins set.

Attached are scans from the 1973 set that I bought for $300 from the BBC Exchange. My scanner isn't the best, but I hope you get an idea of the quality. About 10% was NM/MT+ with quite a few NM (another 20%) and the rest EX+ to EX/MT. Good value for the $. The Ham is very nice - probably at least a PSA 8.

Greg, what, if anything would you want to trade for the 78's I need? After spending 250$ bucks on a vending box that didnt really yield a gradable card. I dont really have the desire to spend much if anything on any more 78's. Let me know what you most pressing needs are I probably got it if it's 70's or 80's stuff.

I'd be interested in a 73 Kuechenberg, 78 Baumhower, 77 Selmon, 75 Blount, 72 Yary, 71 Yepremian, 76 Randy White - all of which would grade a PSA 8 (with solid centering).

Greg, it may be this weekend before I can get back to ya on the 78's, But I have not forgot about cha'

In an off topic question- Does anyone know if e-bay seller littledevildog runs around these boards? it seems like I have seen him but cant remember who he was on here.
Whoever he is, he is a great seller.
    image

  • I'm not sure if Walt (Littledevildog) is on these boards, but I will agree he is one of the best on eBay. He always has a great selection and charges a reasonable amount for shipping (unlike some other big sellers). I would not be nearly as close on my 1974 football set without Walt. He finds some unreal raw cards for grading. Wonderful to deal with.
  • tennesseebankertennesseebanker Posts: 5,433 ✭✭✭
I totally agree sides, he is one of the best.

By the way I saw where you made a great pickup on a couple of 10's-niceimage
    image

  • I don't know if it was a great price, but when it comes to the 1974 football cards I have a hard time letting the 10's go. I own over 50% of all the 10's graded in that set so far. Out of all my sets, this one is the one I want to be my masterpiece. People don't realize how hard it is to get these cards centered. Its one of those sets where no matter how much money you have to spend, you still can't just go out and buy the cards to complete the set. The cards are just not out there to get. I own many PSA 8's that are pop 1 in ANY grade. So when a 10 comes along, it is very impressive. I'm sure in the next few years the pops will rise and the prices will fall. Such is life.
  • Boy, go away on vacation and someone starts a thread that hits you at home. I am slowly amassing all of these sets except the 1972, to go along with all the players sets anyone could want. Littledevildog has been a lifesaver to all us 1970's collector, 4 sharp corners was hot and heavy for a while, but have backed off.

Tenneseebanker, congrats on the family! Sorry to hear about your vending box. I bought some racks from BBC and the centering was terrible.

The 1974 wonder bread cards are great looking, colored just like the 1971 Topps. I have 4 stars graded 7 or better (Csonka, Plunkett, Griese and Warfield). You think there aren't many of these graded, look at the Town talk Bread variation (they don't even list them seperately). The 1975 Wonder breads are rarer and are nice as well, with Drew Pearson's rc.

Bill, Glad you finally made it ! You are certainly a force in the set registry amoung the 70's set collectors, I am behind you in more sets than I would care to recognize. Thanks for the congrats on the family ! We can all learn from your wisdom Bill thanks for coming by.
Someone else who has helped me on my 77 set a great deal is Morty, from E-bay, If anyone gets a chance to deal with him he is a great seller also.

Speaking of the 74 Wonder Bread, I noticed they used a lot of photos from the 74 topps. They look almost identical to 71 topps, But in my opinion Look better! This may be a future set registry set for me, I think it is the best looking of the Wonder Bread sets.

I cant believe the 74's are so rare that thier is no set registered on the registry ! And there is only one psa 10 graded from the whole set so far.

How come there is no set registry for the 75 Wonder Bread set???

    Where can I find some 74's ?????????//
    image

  • Well I am concentrating on the 1977 set(when i can locate some nice raw again) and the 1972 NFLPA sets, but I buy commons from all the football years 1970 through 1985. I have a 7 or better 1971 set over halfway done that isn't even on the registry. I have a price I am willing to pay for PSA 8 or 9 commons and I don't go above that. I don't think that people buying PSA sets are willing to pay the entire premium for an all 9 set versus a set with 9 stars and 8 commons. They want a really nice set and we are the ones driving the prices for the commons up to be #1 on the registry. I try to keep the cost down by grading raw. I scope out the set and use the PSA weighting to get me going. Then I pick-up commons at the big Chicago shows. I know I only have $100 plus grading in my 1963 Stancraft set and probably $200 plus grading in my 1970 Super set. The players sets have benn taking me to the more obscure stuff like sugar daddy, holsum and wonder bread cards. These are much more difficult to find even raw.

I have bought some from Morty, but he wants 9.99 or better for 9's, so I shy away. He is a good seller though.

I don't even have the entire set of 1974 wonder bread cards.

  • gregm13gregm13 Posts: 5,798 ✭✭✭
    Bill,

77 is a great set - it has taken me FOREVER to find the HOF rookie cards. I still need LeRoy Selmon in case you have an extra. I have a ton of raw that I'll eventually send in. I finally cleared out all my pre-73 cards and have no more to grade (besides the six 63 blazers that I picked up including Larry Wilson rc and Deacon Jones rc).

I'm finally over 25% finished on the 71 set in PSA 8 (a little under) - which is the next set that I'll try and finish. Are you looking for any PSA 7 71's? I have a lot of around 25 that I'm looking to sell/trade.

    Regards,

    Greg M.

oh yes Bill, I know your 77 all to well, I am the one right behind you. This is also how I have built most of my 77 set. I bought a 77 raw lot of e-bay that listed nm+ from a very honest raw grader. I have sent in most of the cards that would grade 8 or higher except for a stack of about 40. I have done very well with a partial set that I paid 30 bucks for and looking through my 3 dollar loupe, I have sent only one card that came back below an 8(A Jack Ham) and for the life of me I cant figure why it didnt grade an 8 or higher, possibly a surface wrinkle that I missed. 9.99 for 9's is about my limit also, but I wanted to make a big jump in the registry quick so I bought quite a few from Morty. Bill, are there any certain cards you are having trouble finding? Do you ever sell on E-bay, If so what is your id?

Greg, I have been meaning to ask you; was that you who had the 77 casper GAi 8 on E-bay? Or am I remebering wrong? I remember saving one of your auctions but I cant remember what it was for.image

  • gregm13gregm13 Posts: 5,798 ✭✭✭
Nope it wasn't me. I've never owned a GAI card.... By the way, BBC Exchange has a nice 1978 set for sale - I think for $200.

Thanks for the heads up !

Nope. A day before his site went down, he posted 10 to 15 raw sets including the 1973 that I bought. The 78 looked nice and he listed it as NM/MT avg.

I'm turned off to vending. What was wrong - was it mostly o/c or corner damage? I bought a 78 vending box several years ago and most of the cards were o/c 70/30 or worse. It's too bad because most were razor sharp.

most are o/c or miscut, with rough cut edges and just like you said most of the corners are razor sharp. There are very few that were gradeable, so i decided to just go ahead and build a nice raw set. One that is gradeable is the Drew Pearson I have looked at it through my 10x loupe and it could possibly be a 10. Also got a fairly nice stabler that would be maybe 8 or better. I did get a truckload of stars 4 tarkentons, 4 oj's, 4 paytons etc...
    image

  • This is a kewl thread. I currently have two registered football sets: 1976 Wonder Bread and 1978 Topps. The first cards I ever acquired as a kid were from the 78 Topps set, so I have soft spot for it. I am currently 4th on the Registry for the 78 set and have over 50% of it completed. If anyone has any PSA 8, PSA7, or PSA 9 O/C they are looking to move, feel free to send me a PM.

The 1976 Wonder Bread set is a small one for which it appears there are a fair amount of very high grade cards available. I could actually see perhaps having this set in all PSA 10 one day. In fact, the first PSA 10 I ever bought was the Rayfield Wright card from this set. Including shipping and handling, I paid less than $10 for it!
  • tennesseebankertennesseebanker Posts: 5,433 ✭✭✭
Thanos, I probably have some raw cards from vending that would grade what you want, stars,commons,etc..
Let me know what you need.

BTW-One of my favorite albums "dark side of the Moon" had a large silk screen over my window in college.
    image

  • Greg, Send me the numbers you have and what you want for them. I just bought 9 or 10 for $2.50 a piece on ebay.

Tennessee, I just sent 3 more Casper rookies in along with a Griffin and a Selmon from 1977 yesterday. If you need one let me know. I hope for a 9 out of one, but you can hope in one hand and .... in the other sometimes. Also sent in some more 1972 NFLPA cards, probably have close to two sets and I sold a bunch a while back.

  • tennesseebankertennesseebanker Posts: 5,433 ✭✭✭
How much would you be willing to let a Casper in 8 or better go for ? Some of the prices I have seen on E-bay are ridicoulous!

BTW- THE SEPTEMBER SPECIALS ARE NOW POSTED !

I'd trade you for a nice PSA 8 Selmon. It's the last 77 HOF rookie that I need!!!

    Bill,

Thanks for letting me know. Good luck on your current submission. I have three HOF rookies in for grading right now - Jack Ham, Larry Little and Dan Dierdorf. I'm hoping for 8's on all three. The Ham might even grade a 9 - I have my fingers crossed.
