There were some strong prices this evening. I see there is a new registry entry as well - you were already bumped? Also, Frank won most of the low pops.

Mike cards are usually nicer than 4SC and DSL, so you should be pleased with them.
  • Bumped already!? LOL

Actually, many folks were bumped with the debut of the Football Freaks set! Wow....all 9s (including the only Walter Abercrombie 9 with none higher) and a couple of 10s mixed in there! Nice job!

Who is going to buy that Jack Lambert PSA 10?

    Stingray
  • sixdartsixdart Posts: 821 ✭✭
Most of the key entries own a copy of the Lambert ... pop 6 or 7, however it is a HOF PSA 10.

The person who won the ABERCROMBIE PSA 9 1/1 from 4SC was EBAY memeber 49Robinhood (no longer registered for nearly 6 months?). He (Frank S. in FL) was very agressive with this set and then disappeared. In fact he beat me out on this card with a $50+ bid. Unless he sold the set privately, it should be him. He's also a big Dolphin fan.
  • Yes, who will buy that Lambert???

Free shipping to anyone from the board, just mention it.

If I wasn't involved in so many sets and being on a budget, I would seriously think of picking up the Lambert. I keep eyeing that thing and just keep clicking that "X" at the top right corner of the screen so that I don't get myself into any more hot water!

Sheesh....between my big wins for my low pop '72 baseball cards, my '57s that I'm winning and the '85 Topps Football that I've been picking up....I can't keep pushing myself with spending more. Now, I have to start selling more of my 'other' stuff again! image

Anyone else have issues with most of the Bills, Colts & Oiler players having diamond cuts? I've been looking at quite a few raw cards and if the corners are good, then I get diamonds. Sheesh.

  • Picked up about another dozen or so to add to my set in the last few days. So, when I get 'em, I'll be addin' 'em!

This is really a beautiful set to look at. Horizontal design and tough borders just make you appreciate these things in PSA 9 even more!

The competition is heating up on this set Arny! You've done well for just 2 months time - starting fom scratch!

I see that FranK S. is back bidding aggressively (playmakers305 = Football Freak) ... he likes those low pop singles!

The only person with recent success in grading '85s is Mike King (metalmike20). He did quite well with his last EBAY lots - as a reward!

Very disappointing to say the least Frank. Especially for the price of rack pack boxes.

With your experience, what to do you attribute the low grades to? Personally I think PSA has been very strict on this cards lately.
  • With your experience, what to do you attribute the low grades to? Personally I think PSA has been very strict on this cards lately.

First, I only opened about 5 rack packs and some loose cellos. I had bought a wax box from Art Miller and he had kindly included these packs in the deal.
These cards had much better gloss than my previous wax submission. I actually felt that many of the 9's were borderline 10's. That 8's shocked me in that on any other day most would have been 9's.
To answer your question, Yes. I feel PSA has been very strict on these and most black bordered issues.

  • Frank i am sorry to see your grades were so low .
I sent in about 10 cards at least 2 years ago from 4 or 5 racks i busted back then before the set was really being collected by anyone and the grades were horrid .If i recall it was 4 nines and 6 eights that was enough for me to see that i did not want to mess with them as psa seems to have some crazy standards on them.
Can you imagine if those were 62,s you sent looking that nice i bet you would have got all nines and tens

... that was enough for me to see that i did not want to mess with them as psa seems to have some crazy standards on them. ...

I thought I had it figured out, but in the last 3-4 months - all bets are off. Even with the $5 Registry Specials, there was little population movement with PSA 10s or low pop PSA 9s.

The expense of unopened doesn't justify submitting once you get around 60% of this set. The same high-pop mint singles keep appearing. I would love to see uncut sheets and see where some of these cards are positioned.

purchased a rack pack and wax box. rack pack yielded nothing gradeable. this was not the grocery rack's either. normally the grocery racks are worse than regular from what i've opened. opened one wax pack this a.m. before work. pulled a marino, prolly an 8, nothing higher gradewise. hope the rest of the box is better. will go thru more tonite or tomorrow.

    Thanks,

    - FabFrank

I did to ... the SMR as $175. I really expected Jeremy (a.k.a. The Football Card Store) to be bidding on MOSH's behalf. If it wasn't for my bid, then it would have ended under $150. Sometimes it's better to lose a card ... lol?! I did see him (MOSH) bid prior to my bid, so I could have backed off ... costing the seller $.

The two cards that I compared to this one were the Marcus Allen & Mark Clayton PSA 10s. They both sold for around $250 as population 1/1s. The Clayton RC remains a 1/1 and the Allen a 1/3, so you never know? MOSH purchased the Clayton RC with a 4SC buy-it-now option a while back. The last couple of Henry Ellard PSA 10 RCs and the Irving Fryar PSA RC ended around $200-225.

I did offer the seller a buy-it-now price in that range - which was more than fair. However, he held firm and was cool about it. I believe that the realized price on this card was higher than a Dickerson PSA 10 RC?
  • I learned my lesson with modern 10's. Wait till the next one. Even though 1985 is a tough year, and PSA seems to be going through one of their tightening modes, more will show up in the future. Than it will only be you and I biddingimage

  • I would be interested in upgrading two cards from my 1985 Patriots team set. Currently these two are PSA 7s. Number 320 - TL NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS TL REFUSING TO BE DENIED TONY COLLINS and card number 324 - 1985 TOPPS TONY FRANKLIN. I would love to upgrade to PSA 8 or 9.

Also, thanks to FabFrank with the Tony Eason Card.

Looks like there isn't much action on the '85 football right now. There are hardly any 9s out there and the ones that are, I already have. So, just waiting for the next bunch to be posted.

Anyone have any to trade or sell?

  • I was just looking at the POP report for this set and there isn't a 10 Payton, WOW. Is it safe to say that close to 100% of the 10s in this set come from rack packs?

I really want to do this set, but I think I will have to wait until I am done with my 71 baseball. That Bears team card with Payton on it is one very, very cool card.

    Scott,

The Payton and Elway are two of the toughest cards in the set. The Payton PSA 9 ranges from $150-$250 on Ebay - a high demand card.

I've graded PSA 10s from grocery cello rack packs and regular rack packs, however there is no PSA 10 guarantee in any specific type of box. Opening boxes is cost prohibitive unless you nail a few PSA 10s or low population PSA 9 stars. Wax boxes are definitely the toughest ... if I get 5-10 PSA 9 caliber cards in a box, then I'm happy. With rack packs, the benefit is not losing cards to wax or gum stains. This damage can be 3-4 cards per wax and cello pack.

If you begin this set, the first 30%-40% is very affordable and easy to assemble. The rest will require you to submit some cards on your own or network with members here.

looks like he hit the 79 rack case as well. i'd expect some 10s coming from this batch. maybe he'll part with one of the rack boxes....

    Thanks,
