    Jeremy,

I was surprised at the no bid for the Roby PSA 9 ( 1/1 ) - unless you've got one coming from PSA? It's proved to be a very tough card for me so far and I believe it's the last Dolphin card to grade PSA 9?

MOSH picked up some nice cards at one shot! Next year should be interesting!

Anyway, thanks to David, there were enough to go around. With the demand on these cards, he handled it with class! image

I lost a couple of 1985 cards to MOSH today. I tried to be coy and conservative in my approach and it cost me in the end. I am trying to upgrade my 1985 Patriots team set and should have been more agressive in my bidding.

Really should have bid on the Roby, forgot to go back after the initial snipes.
Oh well I do have 1 in right now.

Updated for sale list, will repost when next order is in unless someone objects. Thanks to everyone who's taken some 85 thus far!

    Brian,

Anytime there is a significant listing of '85s, the sharks smell blood and begin to circle. It's the occasional listing that slips by. Is your listing ... " Toucan's 85 Patriots " ?

    Marcus
  • Options
    Marcus,

Yes, my 1985 set is Toucan's Patriots. Named after my son's favorite bird. In the future, I will remember how difficult it is to get high grdaes in this set and set my bids accordingly.

    Thanks,
    Brian

Guys i was boarded over the weekend and was looking for something to open to pass the time and came across a couple boxes of cellos so i was ripping away all weekend.

Many nice cards but as always the norm 90% of oc or chipped up boarders ,a bad corner ect .

My questions is i did not do well the last time i sent some of these in. Matter of fact it was the worst ever as far as what i got and what i expected and i consider myself to have a pretty good eye for what psa is looking for, so any suggestions on what keeps these things from a min of nines or tens is welcome.

Also any certain cards with out me having to look at pops reports that you guys may need lmk i will make sure they go in,I will keep the redskins maybe a few others the rest will be available

Best advise I can offer (and I've had mixed results also), if it doesn't look perfect and you don't want lower than PSA 9, then don't send it in.
Also, in my opinion, any chipping (even a touch) at all is an automatic 8 or lower.

I'd have to agree with Jeremy.

A card may appear perfect to the naked eye, however, things can get ugly under 10X. If there's any white showing on a corner then the best you can hope for is a PSA 8. The black borders hide many surface defects & edge wrinkles/dents, and the black borders make centering hard to determine somtimes - gives the illusion of floating borders.

The cards are actually easy to grade - they're just difficult to pull in mint or higher grade. If you open enough product, and hit a decent box, you can do well. PSA's standard on this set is much more strict than a Topps white bordered issue. I've had PSA 10 from other years that would be PSA 8s in this set - IMO. Overall, this set is what the Registry was designed for.

Here are some results from a small sub I used as a test to see how strict the grading would be these days. All came from wax/cello, no racks. About 50/50 PSA 8 vs. PSA 9 nothing higher nothing lower.

I wouldn't be going after it anyway (happy with my 9), but I think the starting bid is too high. Unless I've underestimated what these normally sell for? It is a smokin' card though. Does not look to be a slider.

I believe the last EBAY PSA 10 sold for approximately $550? ... so, I would put it in the $450-600 range. This card is very tough in PSA 10 - population (13) out of (1375) submitted. It remained at (12) for a very long time - nearly a year.

There are (2) PSA 10s listed now ... listed in conjunction with his HOF induction. $500 is a fair price considering what PSA 10 singles have been going for.

Looking at the polulation report, there's been a big submision or two - several PSA 10s and many low pop PSA 9s have been graded. One PSA 10 is a Walter Payton RB!

The Moon rookie already has an opening bid on it. Figured that it was a fair price for that bad boy.

Edited: Now, there's a second Moon rookie 10 out there for the same opening bid. That really messes up that first guy selling his. Not a smart choice to put it out at the same time as another one.

Got that Rome PSA 9 a little cheaper I see ... image ? Good deal on the PSA 10! Once you get the first one, you're hooked for good.

Football Feak (Frank S) grabbed Mojomagnet's #48 Rafael Septien PSA 9, so I missed out on that one.

MOSH/Jeremy are making a push on this set ... they've picked up some nice cards in the past month. The last 10% of this set is tough. They are several cards still not graded PSA 9 or higher. Depending on what he needs, his set will drop GPA or increase if he continues to upgrade.

I purchased up a few cello boxes from Steve Hart (at the National), so we'll see if I can upgrade any of my PSA 8s?

Figure I need 2/1 PSA 10s to PSA 9s to keep pace as long as I upgrade the PSA 8s (and some 7s and lower also).

    It's a demanding set.

Welp, I always liked the 1985 Football set, and back in October (or November), I picked up a box from BBCE. It was an unusual box, since it was a 1983 box with 1985 packs. Steve over at BBCE said that some shipped like that. I guess Topps ran out of 85 boxes. Anyways, one thing that was solid through the whole box was centering. Everything was well within 60/40. Nothing miscut. The gum bled through to ruin about 3 cards per pack, and the wax ruined 1 card per pack, so each pack yielded 11 potential submissions. I just recently got around to sending in a sampler of 8 cards to see how they'd grade, and this is what I got...

    1985 TOPPS 40 TONY DORSETT N/A 9
    1985 TOPPS 59 WILLIAM GAY N/A 9
    1985 TOPPS 149 DWAINE BOARD N/A 10
    1985 TOPPS 192 PASSING LEADERS D.MARINO/J.MONTANA 9
    1985 TOPPS 251 WARREN MOON N/A 9
    1985 TOPPS 251 WARREN MOON N/A 9
    1985 TOPPS 253 MIKE MUNCHAK N/A 9
1985 TOPPS 314 DAN MARINO ALL PRO 8

The Dorsett, Gay and Board looked like they were 10 quality. I'm still not sure why one ten'ed and the others didn't. I figured the Marino would 8, but I wanted it slabbed anyways. The box yielded 2 Paytons and 1 Elway, but if I were to guess based on what I saw with this bunch, the Elway would 7 and the Paytons would 8.

Pretty good for my first box, eah? image

Congrats! Looks like you had a solid box worth of cards there!

That Munchak 9 and the Moon 9s are also good cards along with the Board 10. image

Passed the halfway point officially and now inching closer to 5th overall! image

Edited To Add: Marcus, I noticed that you added the AJ Duhe 1 of 1 PSA 10 along with the Joe Morris 1 of 2 PSA 10! Congrats on those! Gotta keep ahead of MOSH as they are putting the pressure on 'ya! I wish you continued success on obtaining the cards you need.

By the way, are you selling/trading the AJ Duhe PSA 9? If so, I need one.

I don't have a registry set of this series, but I just opened up a couple rack packs. What would this Elway grade?

not to bring you down Scott but my guess would be PSA 7 at best

the corners on the scan just look rough, plus the print spot and a little chipping

Unfortunately, these cards are super TOUGH to get graded. I would guess an 8 on it's best day, but probably a 7 as stated.
